Dumbledore is a wizard. Wizards in his world use a wand through which they channel their magic to perform spells. Dumbledore's wand is twelve and a half inches long, supple and swishy, made of apple wood, with a core of phoenix feather.

In his later years, he will go on to become the greatest wizard of his time. While not at that level yet, he is very, very gifted in the magical arts. Some of his capabilities are as follows:

• Offensive spellcasting: Spells used to attack/cause damage in duels and combat. These include jinxes, hexes, and curses.
• Defensive spellcasting: Spells used to defend and protect oneself in duels and combat. These include all types of counter-spells.
• Transfiguration: A branch of magic that focuses on the alteration of the form or appearance of an object, via the alteration of the object's molecular structure. It encompasses transformation, conjuration, and vanishing.
• Charms: A branch of magic that adds or changes properties of an object; it focuses on altering what the object does as opposed to what the object is. Many charms are used in offensive and defensive spellcasting.
• Potion-making: The brewing of magical mixtures which are used to create various effects on the drinker.
• Herbology: The study of magical and mundane plants and fungi, many of which can be used in potions.
• Healing spells: Spells used to improve the physical condition of the living object. (Average.)
• Occlumency: The act of magically closing one's mind against Legilimency; that is, to prevent another person from accessing one's thoughts and feelings, or influencing them. (Novice.)
• Legilimency: The act of magically navigating through the many layers of a person's mind and correctly interpreting one's findings. (Novice.)
