APPEARANCE
Edit
Probably smaller than you, but heavier than she looks. Rin's actually a rather pretty girl, with long dark hair, large eyes, and a slender frame. She's still filling out, of course... she usually wears her hair in two braids with metal rings at the ends. Within these metal rings she carries pellets of poison and antidote. Her standard outfit is a red robe with blue flames on the sleeves and hem, and a gold obi; she arrived in Paradisa in the clothes she was using to infiltrate the badger hole - basically, an orange shift, shuriken-patterned socks, and a pink scarf. She generally carries a carryall, which she sticks her sword in, and at least twenty small daggers concealed on her body when she goes out... if she puts her hair down she looks rather older. If she pinned her hair up in adult style, she'd probably look a lot older.
BACKGROUND
Edit

Added by SushiflopUntil her fourteenth birthday, Rin led a regular life with her loving parents. Her father was the head of a sword school and she picked up a few things about how to swing a blade, but overall she didn't expect much upheaval in her life. She didn't think to worry too much about the rumors of the upstart sword school called the Itto-Ryu whose leader was traveling from school to school attacking revered leaders with a combat philosophy that could be summarized as "whatever works".
On her fourteenth birthday Rin's world fell apart. Her father burst in, bloodied and frightened, instructing her mother to take Rin and run. The two women never stood a chance, because hard on Asano senior's heels was Anotsu Kagehisa and his men - vicious, capable fighters, men who were the core members of the Itto-Ryu.
It didn't take long for them to dispatch Rin's father, and her mother wasn't spared. Anotsu allowed his men to rape her mother, although Rin was spared as assaulting children showed "no class". One of the men - Kuroi Sabato, who would kill Rin's mother soon after - forced Rin back into a corner, covering her ears and blocking the view of her mother's violation. But the men followed their leader's orders; Rin escaped physically unscathed.
Fast-forward two years. Rin, at sixteen years old, thirsts for vengeance upon the Itto-Ryu, especially their narrow-eyed leader. However, she doesn't have the fighting skill to stand a chance against a group of men who'll do anything to take out another fighter.
Conveniently, she doesn't end up going against her enemies alone; at the advice of an immortal monk she seeks the protection of another immortal, a man named Manji. Initially he's reluctant to take on the job, but eventually Rin manages to sway him, and together they range across the countryside hunting down Itto-Ryu wherever they find them.

Added by SushiflopKuroi Sabato is the first significant target the the immortal Manji takes out. As it happened, Kuroi had actually killed Rin's mother and then desecrated her body by slicing off her head, preserving it in a lifelike state, and keeping it sitting on his shoulder under a protective covering. This was apparently meant to "preserve her beauty forever" and also to traumatize our poor heroine. Rin's throwing knives broke away the protective coverings and revealed what remained of her mother.
Anyway, lots of trauma here, too much to go over right now. One of the more significant encounters, however, was with Kawakimi Araya, the man who led the gang-rape of Rin's mother. As it happened, when Rin encountered him for the second time, he was no longer active with the Itto-Ryu - not so obviously at least, because he was taking care of his son Renzo, who was only a few years younger than Rin. Rin actually forged something of a friendship with the boy, saving him from death at the hands of some arrogant samurai and enduring humiliation in the process. When she found out who his father was, she decided that she could forgo revenge, as she didn't want to put another person through the suffering she'd experienced - the pain of losing a parent to revenge. She decided that what she would take as her due from Araya would be simply an apology, and then she'd disappear from his life again, leaving Renzo to live happily with his father.
Araya had other ideas, however. Tricking Rin into thinking he was about to apologize to her, he came close to killing her instead, and had Manji not staged an eleventh-hour rescue he would have succeeded. Araya ended up dead. Renzo walked in on the ugly scene, flipped his shit, and stabbed Manji with... a lamp or something wtf I don't know. Anyway, he ran after that, and Manji and Rin staged the scene to look like he'd actually killed Manji and the matter was over. This worked cuz Renzo walked in when Rin was trying to pull Manji off Araya. So, it looked like the matter was closed, and that Renzo could go on without the desire for vengeance living in his heart... at least until wanted posters of Manji and Rin went up all over Edo. :| Well, shit.
Anyway, this should give you some idea of just how forgiving Rin is - in spite of all her bad experiences, Rin is basically a sweet girl. She’s strong-willed and altruistic and she truly wants to do what’s right. Most of the problems she has with this stem from the fact that in her world, there never really seems to be a surefire right thing to do.
She’s a bit of a crybaby, and she has a big sweet tooth, and she’s not as good a fighter as most of the other people in the series. No one should think that Rin’s worthless or wimpy because of any of this, though! This is a girl who deliberately dislocated her own thumb so she could slip out of her bonds and go rescue her bodyguard. She’s tough! So when Rin’s really loyal to someone, I’d say it’s a fair statement that she’d undergo almost anything to keep them safe. She wouldn’t really agree but she’s fairly clever as well. She’s good at making antidotes for emergencies and carries a little poison too. Since she’s not an especially strong fighter she relies heavily on surprise, demonstrated mostly in her Golden Wasps attack, where she throws several small daggers which are usually concealed in her sleeves.
For all her desire to become stronger Rin’s not entirely cut out to be a fighter. She’s too empathetic; she even finds a certain amount of sympathy for her own private enemy Anotsu, and won’t kill him when he’s alone with her and terribly weakened by lockjaw – it’s just not the honorable thing to do! But that’s Rin, always on some level preferring reconciliation with her enemies rather than just decapitating them. She yells a lot at Anotsu and acts really bratty towards him (although he probably deserves it), but there isn’t as much honest hate demonstrated between them as you’d think. They even manage to work pretty well together sometimes.
Manji, her bodyguard, could probably be fairly stated as Rin’s most important person. She has a giant crush on him and relies on his protection, but has saved his life before. She sees him as a man but also as a brotherly figure, at least in the beginning of the manga; current canon has him imprisoned and Rin with no idea of where he is. She’s still worried and fixated on searching for him.
PERSONALITY
Edit

Added by SushiflopSecretly, she's kind of insane. I'm not kidding. From her perspective, however, all her actions appear perfectly sensible and reasonable and only sometimes driven by emotion. However, one should keep in mind that this is a girl allow someone who's just tried to kill her to stay in her house for a while, and who'll abandon her bodyguard to go traipsing across the Japanese countryside after a man who cracks people's head open with his ax. And who cares if she ended up broke and starving and half-dead? She got there in the end.
Okay; so maybe it's not insanity. Maybe Rin's just a budding determinator... which would still make her kind of crazy. We are talking about a girl who'll dislocate her own limbs to escape being tied up.
And in spite of all this, Rin is essentially a sweet girl.
But when she really cares about someone Rin will do A LOT to help them out and ensure their safety. She's fairly clever, and good at making poisons and antidotes. She relies more on surprise tactics and assassin's tricks than on raw power, though it's obvious that she'd enjoy being a stronger fighter. She has a prideful streak (she is a dojo heiress and of samurai blood, after all), but she'll swallow it if that's what it takes to defend someone vulnerable. Actually, Rin is more illogical in regards to her own safety than she is in anyone else's.
INVOLVEMENT
Edit

Added by SushiflopCanon
Hyakurin: Positive female role model get! Rin admires and trusts Hyakurin, and sometimes relaxes and acts like the kid she is around her. Due to recent events in BOTI canon, Rin's started to trust her and rely on her support even more. Another person she desperately wishes would come to Paradisa.
Manji: Not here, and never here. But Rin wishes he was. She's in the somewhat strange position where she's actually been in Paradisa for longer than she's known him, and although she enjoys living at the castle and loves her new friends, she misses her bodyguard desperately and there's no one at Paradisa she's quite so open around.
Paradisa
Friends
Abel Nightroad: A very kind man, someone Rin trusts a great deal, even though he... lied to her for quite a while about being a Crusnik. On learning his true species, though, Rin had to wonder why he bothered; scary is scary, but there are worse things in Paradisa than vampires that feed on vampires (such as vampires that feed on humans)! She feels at ease trusting in Abel and relying on him, telling him her troubles, and trusts he has the strength to bear it. He's understanding and very kind, and seems to know almost intuitively how to calm her down so she feels comfortable telling him anything. She's shared her past and her goals with him, which is a high act of trust for her now in Paradisa, and she's also shared some of the strange background and association she has with Joshua, as well as sharing some of her knowledge of Joshua's role as Composer, some of the things he's done for her and to the castle. Abel reacts nonjudgmentally enough that she will go on from telling him what she knows to telling him her fears too, and it is with great relief and gratitude that she takes his support in return. After being treated with such kindness from him, and such willingness to listen, she wonders why he was so worried that she'd reject him outright if he told her the truth. Either way, it's very gladdening for her being able to talk to him honestly and being spoken to frankly (she hopes?) in return, now.
Cassandra Cain: A young woman close to Rin's age, apparently a crimefighter. She's not loquacious but Rin likes her regardless and wants to see her settled in and as happy as she can be at Paradisa, and has more or less decided that she wants to be buddies with her. >) They're well on their way, as they trolled Damian together, which is always good times~
Evangeline Athanasia Kitty McDowell: So I herd you're ttly evil? Yeah, whatever. She looks like a little girl, and Rin sort of treats her that way, even though she truly is massively powerful. Rin can tell she's a little more vulnerable than she really lets on, and is nice to her.
Jun: A friend she made during the Pokemon plot. Rin likes her rather a lot, and is very much reminded of Hyakurin, and in getting to know Jun in her own right she's started to like her even more. In spite of being teased by her, Rin considers Jun a trustworthy person with her heart in the right place, in spite of knowing that she's a mercenary who'd take jobs on both sides - more important to her is the fact that Jun is not needlessly cruel. In fact, at this point, Rin has come to trust Jun a great deal; the older woman is one of the people at Paradisa that Rin feels very comfortable getting into trouble with (and Rin needs that, given how much trouble she can get into). They shared a rather pleasant kiss over Christmastime 2009, which made Rin tingly and awkward simultaneously.
Ken Ichijouji: Little bruddah! No really, he's a sweet little guy, and frankly Rin feels a certain amount of protective impulse towards him. He reminds her of Renzo, in a way, with the bonus of... apparently he's already fucked-up family-wise, she can't do any more damage. :( She's told him some things about her past... somehow he is even less forthcoming about these things than she is, but Rin ends up worrying about him quite constantly and sort of pushing him to tell her more, which she simultaneously feels bad about and... well... like if she doesn't bother pushing, he'll just allow mum to keep on being the word. She has a strong desire to protect him and see him happy and it really is painful for her watching him suffer under losses and the silent burden of his own past. The best she can do is just... not to let him suffer under such things alone, and she tries to be there when he needs her, whether he'll say it aloud or not. That's the best she can do for now, only striving to do better in the future.
Raine Sage: Raine-sensei! Helped Rin find appropriate biology books, and generally a kind and interesting person to talk to. Rin quite likes her, and often goes to her for advice and guidance. They're both oriented towards figuring out more about the castle, so they team up quite often in pursuit of knowledge. Definitely is someone Rin trusts to have her back.
Stephanie Brown: Oh lawdy, so much fun. Rin can tell they're on a good wavelength, and hopes to end up encountering many shenanigans with this young woman in the future. Good signs so far: knows Damian, trolls him with Rin. Awesome start here.
Uchiha Itachi: bullies him... mercilessly... but nicely... j/k Rin really likes him too, and kind of trusts him... quite a bit... which might be a little dumb for not knowing him very well, but there you go. They share an enormous sweet tooth. She will not leave him alone now either, and plans to continue being persistently, tirelessly, politely nice until all his resistance is ground down and stuff. Sometimes they talk about combat philosophy, which Rin finds interesting, and she respects his views. Has told him about her past in detail, and he is the only person who knows so much about her at Para so far. He told her his story in return, which actually increased her sympathy and affection for him. She is very partial to him.
Acquaintances
Allen Walker: Nice young man. Rin enjoys his company and his determination, although she doesn't know him well yet. Nothing really earthshaking has happened so far.
Apollo Justice: A friendly guy who is teaching her to swim. Rin enjoys talking with him and learning more about the modern world. :)
Bernkastel: Some witch that jerked Rin around and tried to convince her that Joshua had randomly killed a townsperson. A friend of Lambadelta's. Rin does not trust. B(
Damian Wayne: Such an angry child. Rin can't help but tease him, although she wouldn't wish any real harm to befall him (not that he thinks the same way of her).
Erica Hartmann: An interesting young lady? Might be interested in helping man a research outpost, which is an idea still barely in development but still something which Rin is thinking about. Rin thinks she's cute, will probably talk to her again.
Walter 'Rorschach' Kovacs: got in trouble with one Joshua Kiryu, when he was investigating the Cabot killings, and Rin helped to bust him out of it as best she could. She thinks he's smart and determined, but doesn't like his recklessness and his seemingly impetuous tendency to go and start yelling at total godmodes when enabled by other idiots. :) Will be keeping an eye on him now.
...Things
Joshua Kiryu: My, my... hasn't this gotten complicated. At first she thought he was just a slippery but interesting little puke, and, well, she was right... but then she used the advantage conferred to her by girl's day at Paradisa to pry as much information out of him as she possibly could, learning a bit about the Reaper's game and his position of Composer in the process - not to mention his manipulative tendencies and propensity to do anything for the lulz. She's still as rude and bratty to him as she was before, though - and it's not like he doesn't enjoy it. Just now it's tempered with an edge of wary respect. Still, he's interesting and she enjoys talking to him (sort of), although you didn't hear it from her and it would take bamboo shoots shoved under her fingernails to force the fact out of her. Basically, her curiosity has her trapped - she is not likely to stop talking to him ever. :| Especially as learning about him more and more makes it so she can dislike him less and less. Currently, in fact, she's honestly rather fond of him, in spite of his many aggravating tendencies, the fact that he could wipe her out of existence with a mere thought, and the fact that he was behind all the Cabot "killings" in the summer of 2009. Damn that bottomless heart, is all Rin has to say; she's thoroughly inveigled in whatever bizarre game that he's decided she's a part of, and to be honest, she wouldn't want to just stop playing. Giving up is not in her nature, and at this point, it helps her a lot to think of him as a teacher-type figure, even though when he was on his confidence loss she found out that he thought of her as "his". There's also a loyal streak directed towards him buried in her, although they haven't really found that out yet and Rin's good with putting it off for even longer. Things should only become more complicated and interesting as time goes by...
...And now he says the Game is over. All potential players are engaged within the game; the Composer is overcome. The Game is over, he doesn't want to play anymore, but Rin's not finished and she's not down with giving up. He doesn't get to run away that easily. She'll keep trying... surprise, surprise, surprise. She believes in him, that he's worth too much to just let go. She's going to be missing him hard as long as he ignores her, so try we will until he speaks again.
Zelman Clock: Was her first kiss over Christmas '09, sob. Seems to have taken an interest in her, which Rin is not exactly happy about - she knows he's associated with Joshua, and the vibe she gets off of him isn't exactly stellar. She's not really interested in more trouble in her life and suspects that he might introduce some, which is annoying to say the least. Unfortunately they had a decent (if completely plastered) conversation on New Years' Eve, in which they realized they... sort of had common views on some things, what? Rin doesn't remember it very well, although Zelman does. She'll tolerate him for now. Sigh. Sigh. Against her will, he fed on her, blending his mind into her own for a time, prompting swift mental shoring up from Joshua and scaring the hell out of her all around. She doesn't want anything more to do with Zelman in the near future, at least not at the moment. Or possibly ever, if she can get away with it.
Gone
Anotsu Kagehisa: Gone. But Rin would've stalked the shit out of him if he WAS here. Ordered the death of her father and the gang-rape and then death of her mother. In spite of this, they have a complicated relationship, and Rin doesn't hate him as much as one would suspect - in fact, she has a bizarre kind of respect for him.
Demyx: At first Rin was just pumping him for information on Organization 13, but she actually ended up kind of charmed by him and feels bad for being dishonest with him and would like to be friends. They do silly things together and chat and geek out sometimes, so it seems as though they're well on their way. She's also told him the truth, that she knows he's a nobody and has been talking to Zexion for months, and... he didn't get mad at her! =) That was pretty nice. It seems likely that their friendship will only get better now that she's actually being honest with him. Baww, gone now... she'll miss him and the goofy fun they used to have together. ):
Doa: Without a doubt, Rin's best friend here, in spite of the fact that Doa is a total brat, demands constant attention and affection, and hits A LOT. They rely on each other in spite of this, and Rin understands Doa's childish behavior and can manage her... sometimes. Rin's actually pretty good at manipulating her, hahahah. In spite of having many squabbles and some genuine arguments, they are very close - and now Doa's gone. Rin's still hurting.
Hatsuharu Sohma: He has an alternate personality? But the one in charge most of the time, "White", is a kind and rather gentle sort of guy that she likes quite a bit. After he went crazy over the Marker during the Dead Space plot he felt truly horrible, and now Rin frets over him since he's so hard on himself when it really wasn't his fault. Honestly, she's a little relieved that he's gone, since he doesn't have to feel bad over the Dead Space stuff anymore. :(
Jet: A good friend. She has a lot of respect and affection for him, but worries over his tendency to keep things to himself and get in trouble. She's offered the use of her room if he ever needs it, and would like to get more involved with Peace Patrol; however, her affiliation with Doa might put a damper on this.
Uchiha Madara: Fascinating, terrifying, and one of the people at Paradisa who really makes Rin regret her curiosity sometimes. He saved her from dinosaurs, and she made a deal with him in exchange (since he just stood there and wouldn't let her go until she agreed): nine hours of her time. Simply that. Of course, with those sharingan eyes, he'll get as much time as he wants out of those nine hours... and probably have some left to spare. He may or may not have designs on her, and may or may not have designs on Itachi, but it seems he does have a bit of genuine liking for her mixed in with all this - not that it's very reassuring, given what he's done to some of the people he's loved. Still, Rin does have a little dirt on the darkest and ugliest part of his past, and forgiving soul that she is, it's enough to render her unable to despise him. And he's cuddly. Secretly she likes that. No one's cuddled her for months. And at least he's warm. ): Gone now, and Rin feels a mixture of relief and... something else.
Yukari Takeba: Nice girl! They talked, and then... were menaced by a velociraptor. D: That wasn't too fun. But they were rescued, anyway, and Rin sort of chased her off after that so she could deal with Madara, but Yukari seemed really nice, although Rin felt a tiny bit awkward since she's not so used to being around other girls her age. WTF. Anyway, she'll probably talk to her again. -- And talking has been had, and now Yukari is someone Rin considers to be a close friend. One of her best, actually, along with Ken, Jun and Itachi. These girls really clicked and kicked butt together. It was a long time since Rin was so close to another girl around her own age... and now Yukari is gone, and Rin misses her painfully. Still, she'll hold out hope that she'll meet her friend again someday.
Zexion: Likes him. With reservations. =( He refused to tell her his name for months and months, and she sat on it for a great deal longer, too, after figuring it out once Larxene showed up and started calling him "Zexy". With that revelation, she also knows where he lives, since they're on the same floor olol. She is now in the process of redecorating his pathetically white and barren room.
In spite of her moderate affection for him, she's aware that she's speaking to a schemer who never exactly tells her something straight and occasionally does things just to watch how she reacts. He only tells her information he's okay with her knowing, and she is aware that this means he could be feeding her a hideous pack of lies. But still, her curiosity drives her to converse with him and try to learn more, and so does the liking she has for him - she really wants him to be a good person and enjoys his point of view and his company, as much as he frustrates her sometimes and as much as he sort of breaks her heart at others. He knows a little more about her than she'd necessarily like, he was too astute to be entirely comfortable, but she wanted to trust him on a certain level, which also influenced her to keep in touch with him. When he was brainwashed by the Marker during the Dead Space plot she was furious with him, and then cried and hugged him afterward. In spite of many discomfited moments she was not scared enough to be driven away. She is not likely to let him alone or stop NAGGING him to do something about that room of his anytime soon. Now that he's gone, Rin still misses him persistently; there's a special place in her heart for him, although whether it's an entirely loving place or not... is sort of up in the air. She'd like to give him a sharp poke (or two) in his visible eye, still. Although he's not around to talk with and harass anymore, Zexion has probably influenced the way Rin behaves in Paradisa more than any other person.
STRATEGY
Edit
...Beating her is not difficult, as Rin is the humanyest of the human. She is rather clever though, something of a schemer, and prone to twisting things around into manageable situations, so she won't cave under the first sign of pressure. She's not that strong, though, so basically... if you want to beat her, just beat her into a pulp. :) Then you'll have Tad and Itachi and Evangeline and Yukari and possibly Joshua to deal with, but there you go.
TRIVIA
Edit
- Since the Pokemon plot, Rin has been accompanied by her Arcanine, Tadaharu (Tad for short). He is very loyal to her and she is very loving towards him. He serves as both steed, companion, and defender, and Rin adooooores him. Hurt Tad, and you've made her an enemy too. Hurt Rin, face Tad.
- She also has a kitten. Named Manji-chan ahahaha.
- Her birthday is in mid-late spring. I will decide on a set date... eventually. Since her parents were brutally murdered on her birthday she doesn't talk about it much, or even really do anything other than burn incense and mope on that day, but feel free to bug her about it if you want to kind of upset her. Ha ha.
- Carries like 30 throwing knives on her person whenever she's out in public. In the words of Samura, she better not trip.
- Also has her sword at almost all times.
- Is kind of a dab hand at mixing some poisons and antidotes. Carries these in the metal rings clipped at the ends of her braids.
- Has a massive sweet tooth.
- Her room is rather simple; she sleeps on a futon with comforter instead of the standard bed, and has stuff for making tea and a low table. Her sword is in a stand near the door, and that's about it. There's usually books around, separated in three categories: to read, in the process of being read, and waiting to be returned to the library. She also has a microscope now. Thanks Itachikins! :)
- Her room also has lots of pinwheels around... she has some in vases and stuff like other people arrange flowers. Some of them are broken, but she does not throw them away. They're a personal symbol for her.
WANT MORE?
Edit
not quite crouching moron, hidden badass, but she gets scary...
Rin goes all crazy and is like "I'MMA PROTECTZ!" and then a crazy sadist pervs over her
He killed her parents and breaks open people's heads with his ax. She still sasses him
and is publicly humiliated in the process
Acting like a pro under heavy interrogation
Blazing through the checkpoint on balls and fury
Kinda shoots herself in the foot sometimes...
And then gets rescued. By her mortal enemy. Who fails to recognize her... yeah
