appearance
Edit

Added by ContinuingFor a girl of fourteen (physically, at least), Asuka is well-developed. Puberty has been kind to her, giving her curves and long legs, though she's only a little taller than five feet. She's very slender and may even be underweight. She's petite in every sense of the word, but she does have some muscle due to her Eva training. Her posture tends to be very casual, but she can quickly straighten up and become imposing, despite her small body.
Asuka appears to be Caucasian for the most part with red hair and blue eyes; maybe a little on the pale side. But her eyes have a slight slant to them, the only true sign of her Japanese heritage. Asuka's hair is her pride and joy. She wears most of it down, which reaches her waist. The front part is almost always pulled back, out of her face. Most of the time her hair is held back by her A-10 nerve clips, which are a part of her plug suit. If she's not using those, they're just normal hair clips.
As for clothing, Asuka likes cute things. Skirts and dresses are what she tends to lean towards, though she's not opposed to shorts or jeans. The more leg, the better! She also likes showing cleavage. And then slapping people if they happen to see something.
She usually has her arms crossed or a hand on her hip. Asuka knows she looks good, and doesn't hesitate using that to her advantage. Jailbait, what? :|
background
Edit
Asuka was born to an American man and a Japanese woman, Kyoko, who worked in Germany on the Evangelion Project. A contact experiment accident with Unit-02 caused her to lose her mind. Kyoko's insanity led her to treat a doll like Asuka and call it her daughter's name, asking her to die with her and at one point Kyoko attempted to kill Asuka. However, Asuka still loved her mother completely and wanted her to still be her mother. Asuka's father wanted nothing to do with her insane mother or Asuka herself (as her mother reminded Asuka). He began a relationship with Kyoko's doctor.

Added by ContinuingAsuka pushed herself to be the best at everything in order to get her mother's attention until the day she was found to be the Second Child, chosen to be the pilot of Unit-02. But when Asuka ran home to tell her mother, she found both her and the doll hanging from the ceiling. Her mother had committed suicide. From then on, Asuka clung to her identity as a pilot and swore to never cry again.
Her father remarried to her mother's doctor, and her stepmother found Asuka to be impossible to get along with and a little frightening. Eventually, Asuka was sent to Tokyo-3 three to help battle the Angels. She lived with Shinji Ikari and Misato Katsuragi, going to school (despite having graduated from college already), and training. Her spotlight was often stolen or shared by Shinji or Rei, and as time went on, Asuka's mental state became more and more unstable--she would be outwardly violent towards people she hated (Rei) and people she liked (Shinji). She was saved by Shinji when the fifteenth Angel attacked, and that further caused her anguish. Her synch ratio with her Eva fell to dangerously low levels and despite orders to stay back, Asuka continued to pilot.
Her past came back to haunt her when the Angel Arael caused her to relive her past and reopened old wounds. Her mother's suicide and her messed up childhood came back fresh, and Asuka was made aware of how fake she was to everyone around her. She fell into depression and lost her will to live. NERV found her and took her to the hospital, where she stayed in a coma and was replaced by another pilot.
On the eve of the Third Impact, Asuka was placed into Unit-02 and submerged in a lake. Asuka then realized that her mother's soul was in Unit-02--meaning her mother was always with her, protecting her. Back in action, Asuka fought off nine mass produced Evas. However, the power in Unit-02 ran out and the other Evas were still able to function even after being mutilated by Asuka. Unit-02 and Asuka (who was still linked to it) were impaled and dismembered numerous times, Asuka's eye gouged out, arm split in half, and insides spilling out just like her Eva.
In short: She was pwned.
Yet after all of mankind is turned into a sea of LCL, she was on a beach with Shinji as the only two people left. Shinji attempted to strangle her, but her only reaction was to stroke his cheek gently with her hand. This caused Shinji to sob on her chest, to which she says the series' final line: "How disgusting."
personality
Edit
The pamphlet that was released with the End of Evangelion movie gives this description for Asuka: A high but fragile wall. A tightly stretched thread. The fear of not being needed.
This is a very accurate description.
Asuka comes across as a bitch. She's overly-confident, outgoing, conceited, pushy, loud, and a little violent. Her superiority complex is the size of Russia. On top of that, she's moody. One moment she's friendly and laughing, the next she's verbally or physically attempting to rip someone a new one. People have a hard time grasping Asuka, and don't really bother to try because it's easier to assume she is just a bitch that will get hers one day.
(And she does, in the end.)
The mood swings and superiority complex are all a front. And like most fronts, they stem from her traumatic childhood. She's a victim of horrible circumstances. Asuka's ego is actually a fragile thing, and she will desperately lash out to keep people from damaging it. Asuka wants to be noticed, wants to be special, and wants to be an independent adult. And she doesn't want to remember how her current personality came to be, nor admit that she realizes that she's messed up. Admitting this would be weakness. So she represses her trauma and things that make her unhappy. With a mother that killed herself and a father that quickly remarried, Asuka came to believe that she could only rely on herself. To some extent, she is much more mature than other girls her age--but at a steep cost.
She tends to push people away. Her personality can go from charming to cruel in a second, and once Asuka deems someone unworthy of her charm, she doesn't humor them for long. Asuka forced herself to grow up quickly, refusing to cry even after her mother killed herself. She doesn't like relying on others, but at the same time hates being alone. She wants to have close friends, but is afraid of letting people see how miserable she really is. She believed herself to be a grown woman, which is why she went after Kaji, a much older man.
Conveniently, being a pilot gave Asuka some portion of the attention she craved and assurance she would not be thrown away. It gave her power. Yet she placed her whole worth on being an Evangelion pilot, so when she was unable to sync with Unit 02, her facade began to crumble around her in all the worst ways. Losing the battle to the angel Zeruel, and then having her mind literally raped by the angel Arael, only to be rescued by the girl she hated, Rei, sent Asuka into a deep depression. She was unable to cope with losing her identity as a skilled pilot. Hiding her problems, and never learning how to deal with them were her undoing. Asuka graduated college at 14, so while she focused on training and studies, she never focused on her emotional issues.
Despite her mental instability, Asuka did not want to die when it came to the end. She did not want to die with her mother, and she rejected Instrumentality at the end of the series; refusing to lose her physical form and join the rest of humanity in a sea of LCL. A brief glimmer of her kindness also emerged at the end of the world: she caressed Shinji's cheek as he cried.
Essentially, Asuka is very easy to hate and very difficult to love. She can be immensely cruel to those around her, vicious in battle, but inside Asuka is a good girl that just wanted to be strong and independent. She's messed up in the head, and actually has low self-worth, but it's amazing she's managed to keep it together at all given what's happened to her.
paradisa
Edit
Two years after the end of the world, Asuka is actually in one of her better mental states. Despite the castle constantly reminding her of her traumas and failures, she actually has friends. And because of that, she can forget what home holds for her... most of the time. Asuka is a little calmer, but the instability is still there. She still has a front, but there isn't nearly as much strength behind it to keep it up for long. It drops every now and then, and most of the time when it has, she's had a friend to help her back up.
She can still be cruel to others without seemingly much reason, and she does hate the castle for messing with her mind now and then, but really... it's better than home, so she can't complain that much.
the evangelion project
Edit

Added by ContinuingEvangelions are bio-mechanical fighting units. NERV, using samples of the first Angel Adam, supposedly created Evas to fight off the Angels and protect humanity. In actuality, they were created to initiate the Third Impact... which turned all of humanity into orange goo or tang or LCL or THE NEXT STEP OF EVOLUTION.
While Evangelions are part mechanical (the armor on them actually restrains them) and have a pilot, they bleed. Their sizes vary in the series, but they're HUGE. A human can very easily be engulfed by a hand. Contact experiments are done with each Evangelion... tragically landing them with a human soul. This gives them an A.T. Field, capable of blocking attacks from pretty much every man-made weapon ever. Evas also run on external power--they lack S² Engines, which give Angels limitless energy. The Evangelion Units can only run for about 5 minutes without an umbilical cord plugging them in. They can also regenerate, which is very handy since they tend to get damaged a lot.
In order to control the Eva, the pilot needs to sync with the Eva. This depends on the mind on the pilot and the soul that's in Evangelion. Pilots usually wear clips, a plug suit, and are submerged in LCL (a liquid that delivers oxygen directly to the blood and... actually smells like blood!) Evas are controlled by thought and manual controls in the native language of the pilot.
If the Eva is damaged, so is the pilot. Their nerves are linked to the Eva. If the Eva's arm is cut off, the pilot will feel as if their own arm was cut off. But it's only at high sync levels that damage to the pilot is actually sustained. Also, sometimes the Evangelion goes into Berserker mode--when synch levels are off the chart, and the Evangelion is pretty much wild. This only happens under extreme circumstances, however.
unit 02
Edit
Asuka's mother's soul is in Unit 02. Asuka's Eva is the third Evangelion created, and the first one created specifically for combat against the Angels. It also has reddish-purple blood instead of red like the others... weird, huh? D8
During Christmas of 2009, Asuka got her Evangelion in Paradisa. However, it was downsized. It's now about 13m or 43ish ft tall. Tony Stark, the Tenth Doctor, and Dr. Horrible all worked together to create a power source for it.
relationships
Edit
canon
Edit

Added by ContinuingHIKARI → When Asuka came to school in Tokyo-3, Hikari was the class representative. Somehow, she ended up being Asuka's only friend.
- A part of Asuka resents Hikari, because she presumably turned into a pile of orange goo. Another part of Asuka desperately wants to cling to Hikari and never let her go, because she's a part of home, a part of that section of her life that wasn't related to piloting or NERV. She was her normalcy. Aaaand this other part of Asuka is sort of afraid of her--she's afraid Hikari will find out that the Eva pilots (her, namely) failed bigtime and the world ended. So she's kinda not too sure how to handle her. Asuka's seen so much crazy stuff that it's just so WEIRD being around Hikari again, and as much as she tries to pretend it doesn't bug her, it does. She sees Hikari as someone who... well, is pretty not messed up :( and she doesn't want to SEE her messed up.
KAJI → Asuka's former guardian and crush. Poor Kaji had to constantly refuse the sexual advances of a fourteen year old girl. Kaji was killed, but Asuka would never believe that. It's easier for her to just think he turned into LCL.
KAWORU → The Fifth Child, and Asuka's replacement. She never met him in canon, but in Paradisa she's met a few incarnations of him. She calls him "Fifth" most of the time, and finds him weird, and... knows Shinji killed him.
- The last time he was in Paradisa, she found out he was an Angel--which did not fly with her. She saw him as an enemy, but he never did anything bad...
KENSUKE → Classmate!
MISATO → Her guardian in Japan. Misato and Kaji's romance makes Asuka jealous and spiteful of Misato. She thinks she's a failure of an adult, but at the same time she envies that she has Kaji. Or had. She assumes she turned into orange goo.
REI → The First Child. Asuka had a very rough relationship with Rei from the beginning--Rei reminded Asuka of a mindless little doll that would do anything she was told. Asuka became more and more hostile towards Rei as time went on.
- She doesn't remember her from home, only from her brief time in Paradisa. This time around, she's learned Rei is like Kaworu, and like him, she has a strange affection for Shinji that makes Asuka seethe.
SHINJI → Asuka and Shinji had a love-hate relationship. She liked him, he liked her... but both were so messed up that they didn't know how to properly show it. Asuka was cruel and rough to Shinji, forced him into a kiss and teased him relentlessly, but she was too scared to let him see the real her. That scared Shinji away, but that further upset her and made her wonder why he was so damn timid. At the end, they were the last two people left in the world.
- Asuka forgot Shinji entirely when she entered Paradisa. During his first stay in Paradisa, Asuka fell back into step with him fairly easy. She sensed how he was lacking a backbone and took advantage of it, but she did come to believe he was a pilot... and that she wasn't alone at the end. She and Shinji became a couple of sorts, but that came to an end when Asuka found out about him strangling her. Then, Shinji left. He came back, and their relationship never really got past being rocky. For some reason, that just led to her being more upset when he left...
TOJI → The Fourth Child. Never got along with him, can't remember him.
paradisa
Edit
ABEL → Creepy old priest. He's weird as hell, but Asuka loved freaking him out with her Eva. She dislikes that he knew Shinji, dislikes that he was nice to him and then her, and dislikes anything that has anything to do with god. Asuka thinks Abel is an idiot and probably a pervert.
ALLEN → A friend of Shinji's with white hair and a weird scar. Asuka has no REAL reason to pester him aside from trying to make herself feel better about how much she hates herself. He's so polite that it makes her want to hit him. She won't go out of her way to pester him, but if they cross paths, it's never going to be nicely.
APOLLO → Token nice guy. He's annoying, but also funny because people like to call him a stripper :D Really, Asuka has no reason to dislike him. He's been very nice to her and patient, and hasn't snipped back unless she initiated it... which is PRECISELY why he drives her up the wall. He's too nice. Why is he nice to people? Why does he try? These are things that are very difficult for her, and she doesn't understand them... so she dislikes him for being... nice.
COLETTE → ... some really nice girl. Her niceness annoys Asuka, and makes her thinks she's just going to be used, but she never stops. Asuka doesn't think she has the capability to be mean. It's kinda interesting...
DANTE → Met him through Zelman. He's apparently some sort of half-monster guy or something, Asuka wasn't paying attention. Unlike Zelman, Dante doesn't intimidate Asuka at all. He's sort of that lame guy that hangs out with the cooler guy for some inexplicable reason (though Asuka knows why...) Asuka was pissed at him for making her choke on waffles once upon a time, but she was kind of touched that he bothered to apologize. He's cool in her books. Especially now that he's her bitch and carries her shopping bags and gives her piggy back rides. And can be okay and nice. Might be like a big bro.
GOLD → Asuka thinks he's a typical boy, gross and annoying and running around with a stupid monkey thing. All she ever wants to do is bitch at him, especially after he insulted her kiss and her Eva.
HALLOWEEN → Stupid, annoying puppet thing.
JOSHUA → Asuka hates Joshua. Plain and simple. Asuka can usually tolerate people who are on decent terms with Zelman, but Josh is the exception. Mostly because... he's come close to hitting her crazy buttons, and he goddamn well knows it. Plus, he acts very nice and polite. Two things she never likes in other people because she can never quite manage it herself--seeing this guy fake it (BECAUSE SHE KNOWS YOU'RE A DOUCHE, JOSHUA) just enrages her all the more.
MAI → Brick Girl. She fills the Rei-shaped hole in Asuka's heart. She thinks she's dull and doll-like, and she's not really fond of her sudden devotion to Zelman... B| Asuka's sort of backed off since Mai burned her arm, but that doesn't mean she can't seethe at her from a distance.
ZELMAN → A vampire, thus the nickname Bloodsucker. Over the past two years, through lots of bickering, shopping trips, and revealing losses thanks to the castle, Asuka has come to see him as a friend. A real friend that she can (somewhat) lower her guard around. Zelman is actually the reason Asuka isn't completely insane. He's seen her at her worst, and a while ago she might think he would continue to press the crazy button, she knows the friendship feeling is mutual. They even have a cute little deal that they can't die while the other is around. However, Asuka's feelings for her BFF have gotten a little complicated and she's not sure if it's love or what. She knows he's a big bad vampire and all, but more importantly... she doesn't want to screw this up and suddenly be without all the things she's come to grow fond of in the past 24 months. He can pretty much treat her like trash and she'd always crawl back. It's not the healthiest relationship, but it's one of the best ones she's ever had...
trivia
Edit
- Fluent in German! However, the mun is not, so don't expect to see that much.
- She's also fluent in Japanese, but did horrible in school in Japan because she struggles with kanji.
- She's got a bit of strength for being a small girl. And knows some fighting techniques because you don't pull that stuff outta your ass when you're piloting
unless you're Shinji. - Dolls and birds are ways to freak her out.
- Had a Growlithe during the Pokemon plot. She keeps the plush of it on her bed.
- Owns a kitten! It's white and has black spots. She doesn't know if his name was Fish Paste or Kuro-chan and she ends up calling it some weird combination of that, most of the time. Fish-chan?
- PenPen, the warm-water penguin, also lives with Asuka. He's very smart and drinks beer. Not kidding.
- Asuka's birth date actually makes her 13 for the majority of the series, not 14 like all the official material says. Plot hole what?
