Barnaby is initially played off as a person with much inner and outer strength, but this proves to be easy to take down under enough stress. Having had to deal with the mysterious murder of his parents right before his eyes, he's lived a life not knowing any type of emotional security or what long-lasting faith could be. After being given only a single clue, which later alluded to a group known as "Ouroboros" as a possible suspect—Barnaby was incapable of putting a face to the culprit and would continue to hold hatred and scorn in his heart for whoever had ended his mother and father's lives. This resulted in a fiery temper and a volatile berserk button throughout Barnaby's life. Due to his efforts to uncover more about the mysterious Ouroboros, his interactions and feelings with others suddenly become difficult and forced.

Due to his upbringing, Barnaby learned to trust in no one but himself and found it very difficult to see the necessity in relying on other people. When he debuts into the hero world and is given an older and more experienced partner to work with named Kotetsu Kaburagi, Barnaby outright tells the other that he doesn't trust him. This is something that makes teamwork and cooperation difficult which is very essential with two heroes paired up to help fight crime and save lives. His reliance on other people was also given a mighty blow due to the warped memories he was given by Maverick, the man that had essentially been a father figure to him most of his life. However eventually he learns that there's no reason to distance himself from others, especially if they're willing to give him their faith and trust in return without asking if it's alright.

Even as Kotetsu begins to form a bit of a playful relationship with Barnaby, sadly, he is incapable of not seeing this as troublesome. Such as his partner asking Barnaby from time to time if he's been eating right, to having to find Kotetsu occasionally butting into his private life. That is, until Barnaby learns that though others might not be obligated to care of him, there is absolutely no reason that they shouldn't try anyway. During their fight with the assumed killer of his parents, Jake Martinez, it was revealed that even with all the conflicts Barnaby and Kotetsu had gone through Kotetsu still wanted Barnaby's trust and the younger hero realized there was no real reason to withhold it.

Barnaby only ever had to look out for one person; himself. Even with his job as a hero, his initial reason to become one was only to uncover the identity of his parent's killer. He hardly shared any of the charisma and need to help people as Kotetsu obviously had, nor did he feel any need to show some sort of respect or appreciation for the other's feelings toward him. Having had to live on his own and occupy his time with researching the Ouroboros, things such as identifying with other people's emotions and "taking a walk in another's shoes" was difficult for him. However, this did not mean Barnaby was incapable of compassion or concern for other people, or at least any type of non-typical reaction. Kotetsu's initial teasing and nickname of "Bunny" took Barnaby by surprise but with time he begins to not just react less to the actions but accept them as well. As he's given more of a chance to interact with someone that encourages him to have sudden outbursts and to think not just with his head but with his heart, the cold exterior he has developed for most of his life begins to thaw and he begins to act more like a normal young man his age.

A human being can only withstand so much in the world on their own and Barnaby realizes that there is much more he can accomplish not just toward his goals but toward his own development as a person; he can seek help from others, he can accept concern, and even with the problems he has faced from his early childhood he's capable of confiding this information with others as well as aiding them in their own time of need. Not only does this result in him becoming more open with issues in his own life with Kotetsu but causes him to want to know about whatever he can do to help other people. When Kotetsu reveals that he's been steadily losing his powers, Barnaby is incredibly upset at the fact that he'd hide such important information from him. Especially since Barnaby himself had been opening up and being more responsive to his senior. Learning what it is to fully confide in another person, he expects the same in return and can feel disappointed at feeling left in the dark over things he now genuinely worries about.

Through all of his tribulations and struggles, Barnaby does in fact come out of it stronger than he used to be, and he is now a much different man. In a little under two years, Barnaby's learned to calm himself during distressing times and accept help from those that genuinely care about him. When confronting one of Jake Martinez' followers in order to gain more information about Ouroboros, he becomes incredibly distraught and frustrated over what he's told as well as obessed at finding out the truth, but it isn't without Kotetsu's help that he manages to keep his composure enough to deal with the whole situation in a much more reasonable manner. At one point, he's even given a bit of comfort food to cope with the stress better. This single act of compassion is great enough that Barnaby would be devoted enough to try making the same dish for Kotetsu one day. Though his experiences with people are still something different, he tries his best to come off as genuinely as he can but without the cold edge that he used to have due to the painful memories of his past. Barnaby understands who he can trust and who he can't, and he knows that being himself is the most important thing above anything else.

There is no one that Barnaby needs to impress or win over, but coming off of a routine like his own is difficult. He still has many emotional flaws and even with the fact that he's not alone in life, Barnaby continues to occasionally act like a child attempting their first public speech: the nerve and charisma to do well is there but underneath it all is a nervous child that doesn't want to mess up. But, it always helps to have a friend in the wings to help cheer you on, and with his strengthened friendship with Kotetsu it is shown that Barnaby no longer has much to worry about as he continues to live his life. More recently, and after a one year hiatus from the public, Barnaby has given himself the space and a much needed break to grow. He has no qualms about going back to being a hero and partnering up with Kotetsu once again. Ready and willing, it seems, to make up for lost time.
