Bellatrix Prosperina Black, as she was born, is a full-blooded witch of one of the most ancient and obsessively pure-blooded families. She married Rodolphus Lestrange, himself also full-blooded, but she did not marry for love. Always drawn to the Dark Arts, Bellatrix was among Voldemort's supporters from the beginning. Her family upbringing made her fanatically devoted to the cause, beginning with a hatred and contempt of all Muggles and Muggle-born witches and wizards.

Given to cruelty and sadism, she quickly rose to be one of Voldemort's most trusted lieutenants, and a member of the inner circle of Death Eaters, so-called because their final goal was to conquer death. She learned much dark magic from her master, and was an exceptional and eager pupil. Condescending to all those around her, including her sister, Narcissa, she admires only Voldemort. Even her husband does not hold such a high place in her heart.

Although Bella is truly devoted to the cause, she would probably have been drawn to it anyway by the simple fact that the Death Eaters spread hysteria and chaos through the use of excessive violence. She does not feel quite as much at home doing anything else. There is a need to have power over others in her that is hard to control, and she does not wish to. There is a hunter in her that truly enjoys the hunt, however bloody it may be, however many people may need to die. She has loyalty to Voldemort and to the cause above everything else - even family ties, and nothing blocks her way and survives.

She once tortured a couple, the Longbottoms, out of their wits, at first believing they had information, and then in anger that they did not. Her temper is very short and rarely leashed, unless it is by direct order from her Lord. All of this comes together to make Bellatrix a very deadly witch, and she knows it. Challenge her and she will laugh - and that will likely be the last thing you ever hear.
