BackgroundEdit

Not much is actually known about Carl's own early life, only that he attended the NOL Military Academy with Jin Kisaragi, Noel Vermillion, Makoto Nanaya, and Tsubaki Yayoi. He was at the top of his class as a prodigious student, but dropped out one day, presumably when his sister turned into Nirvana.

Supposedly, he lived with his sister, mother, and father. This would have been a perfectly normal life had his father not been Relius Clover, a genius alchemist known as "The Puppet Master" who works for the NOL (is over 100 years old, and also created the Murakumo Units' bodies). Relius suddenly disappeared one day. According to Sector Seven members, 5 people were supposed to infiltrate the Clover estate disguised as subordinates for surveillance. However, there wasn't a single person in the place. After a member found Relius' underground lab, he noted that Relius was working on a project before being forced to abandon it rapidly, for unknown reasons. This project was presumably the Nox Nyctores Nirvana, and also supposedly brought along his wife, Ignis.

Carl stumbled upon Nirvana half completed and had to finish the job of building what was an automaton incorporating parts of his sister's body to have a slim chance of getting her back to normal. Afterwards, they decided to walk 3 days to their Uncle Francis' house for advice. Aunt Rosenne was terrified of Ada (now Nirvana). This is when he decided to become a vigilante to gather information. He mysteriously disappears, 2 years before the events of BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger, in AD 2197.

The reason he pursues Ragna the Bloodedge is for the Azure Grimoire he possesses, to change his sister back. Nirvana, despite what multiple characters say, really is his sister, Ada Clover. The Azure Grimoire was mentioned several times in his father's records, so he believes it can help restore his sister.

In BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger, Carl arrives in Kagutsuchi along with Nirvana. There, he spars with Taokaka, a warrior of the Kaka Clan, and gets injured. As a result, Litchi Faye-Ling treats his wounds, and he runs off afterwards. Rachel "invites" him to "play" with her. (read: She teleports him randomly to her garden for a fight.) She gives him information on the Nox Nyctores and how they might possibly help him. Arriving at the NOL branch, Carl fights either Noel Vermillion or Jin Kisaragi, two of his former classmates (which one depends on the player's choices.) No matter path, he stumbles upon v-13, and loses. Litchi arrives to protect Carl from v-13's Astral Heat, and time loops again...

Events from BlazBlue: Continuum Shift will be here later when I'm not lazy.

PersonalityEdit

They used red watercolor for a reason.

"He seems to think like an adult and always carries out his duties effectively and efficiently. Ever courteous, Carl always has a smile on his face, even when he's staring down a target."

Carl, on the surface, is who you'd generally consider a nice, pleasant kid. He's polite to everyone he meets, even his opponents. He'll help people with everyday tasks or explain things to them (such as what a vigilante is, to Taokaka), but it's more out of courtesy than actual kindness. It'd be rude not to give a name when asked, after all, and he usually doesn't like being rude. Even though he is a child, he hates being treated like and called one. To him, there is nothing childish about being a first-class vigilante. He will act his age once in a while, though. He's not even above poking fun at people and making quiet, sarcastic comments. Certain subjects such as intimacy and love will most likely confuse, embarrass, or not draw a reaction from him as well. From taking pride in the fact that his performance has pleased others, to enjoying cookies, it's easy to see that the childish part of him that hasn't faded away.

Mostly keeping to his own business and usually far too absorbed to mind others', he does not want to trouble others with his own problems, suspicious of adults and especially suspicious of those who ask about his sister. In the past, supposedly, "everyone who called his sister Nirvana" has tricked them. Carl tends to trust "children" or teenagers rather than adults, saying that grown-ups always hide things. He believes adults are out to get him and his sister, and distrusts most of them as a result. And by most, I mean 99% of the adults he comes across. Goodwill is something he's taking the time to understand after the events of BlazBlue: Continuum Shift, but it's still a bit difficult for him.

And then there are the moments when he forgoes the pleasantries. Disturbingly sadistic or ruthless at times, Carl will fight someone or attempt to kill them with no hesitation if his sister says they're an opponent. Despite sharing many moments (which he still fondly remembers) with them, he tries to kill his former classmates or "persuade" them for information, even going as far as to say "I'll have you die right here" with a smile on his face when speaking to one of them. This could be the effect of Nirvana, as Nox Nyctores are said to affect their user's mental state. When Nu destroyed Nirvana, he broke down half sobbing but afterwards just says "You were just hiding Sis, weren't you?" with an odd calmness compared to his hysterical breakdown moments before. "My sister is scattered all over the place...I pick her up again...and again..." Blood and violence do not seem to disturb him either, as he's more likely to comment how unnecessary or unpleasant the results are than to condemn the act itself. This is also probably due to Nirvana's influence, as she rids him of "unnecessary emotions" such as fear, mercy, and hesitation. But after BBCS, he aspires to become a kind adult one day, even if he might not make it to that age. In short, sanity and Carl aren't exactly on speaking terms, but they're getting there.

The most unpleasant part of him is his relationship to his sister, which some see as obsession. Unfortunately, it is not far from the truth. He constantly talks to his sister and checks on her, and is largely dependent on her in battle. As Rachel accurately puts it, "Honestly, you're a co-dependent introvert, and you're constantly on the verge of tears. Perhaps if you could tear yourself away from your sister, you'd be less of a petulant infant". When separated, he panics and cries out for his sister, becoming a needy child. He is scared of being left alone "again" and completely breaks down without her. Being left alone is something that scares him above all else. He is most concerned about his sister than anything, even himself, as he puts her well-being above his own. If the opponent shows even the slightest bit of hostility towards her, he attacks violently. Carl has stated that he will change his sister back, and will do anything for her sake.

tl;dr He's a smart, doubtful, partially insane shota with a really really big sister complex and horrible daddy issues. And he's trying to learn how to give a damn about someone else other than his sister, at least.

AbilitiesEdit

"A first class vigilante, Carl has brought many criminals to justice with his mysterious doll Nirvana."
Do you see the musical theme yet?

Carl is quite young, and as a result, cannot take as many hits as say, Jin, Noel, and maybe Ragna even though his defense sucks since he possesses the lowest amount of health. He is also agile and can dash in the air as well as sidestep an enemy (Vivace). Since he's from a fighting game, he's got to be tough. He's more resilient than a normal boy and is actually quite powerful for his age, seeing as he is a well-known vigilante, and can hold his own against v-13 and Hakumen while not being too badly damaged (but still would've lost if he went up against them because Hakumen is a fucking godmode and Nu is Nu). He is apparently the strongest vigilante (out of him, Bang, and Tao), as stated by Mori. What.

He has several marionettes in his top hat/cape/hammerspace which he uses as a weapon. The marionettes can be used on the ground (Cantabile), used as a sword (has a tiny sword/lance), and apparently have flags and shields which can be used as blunt weapons what. He can use it to block and attack this way, even in midair (Allegretto). He can also summon a huge gear out of nowhere, making it spin rapidly to attack the enemy (Laetabilis Cantata). HE USES MARIONETTES A LOT...yeah.

Deus Machina: Organic Unit Nox Nyctores NirvanaEdit

i need an entire section about his sister /sob

"Nox Nyctores Nirvana...one of the great weapons that survived the Dark War. It feeds on one's thirst for blood, and will not stop until all its foes have been eliminated. Still...your doll seems a rather friendly one."

my hands were never meant for hurting people ;;

Nirvana is the fourth Nox Nyctores, a weapon made during the Dark War 100 years ago. The Nox Nyctores are a set of weapons based on the Sankishin Units, created from thousands of souls made to combat the Black Beast during the First War of Magic. They are said to put a great mental strain on their users by repressing feelings that may hinder them during battle such as fear or remorse.

Hakumen states that Nirvana is driven by the desire to kill and is not fully influencing his behavior. ("Deus Machina drives people insane? Ridiculous. Your desire to kill simply directs the Deus Machina.") Nirvana is extremely protective of Carl and will even sacrifice herself to save him. She can hold a conversation, though it is presumably telepathic. It seems to have a will of its own, as it can walk by itself and respond to questions by nodding. Strangely, it can telepathically send mental images, as seen with Litchi (in which she also...read her mind and predicted the future at the same time. I'm not sure what the hell this is either). Carl's glasses are said to be able to allow him to communicate with her. A few people such as Tager or Kokonoe of Sector Seven, as well as Litchi knew Nirvana to be a Nox Nyctores under Sector Seven's property, while one of the Six Heroes such as Valkenhayn apparently knew Nirvana during the Dark War, and used to be her enemy (though Hakumen states he is a "comrade"). Nirvana and Ignis were used to fight back the Black Beast unleashed by Relius at Sector Seven, able to move despite lacking cores by using Kokonoe's mechanical "powertrains". Oh, and at her core is a Black Beast. (EVERYTHING IS BLACK BEAST. EVERYTHING.) Afterwards, Kokonoe uses an invervention ars to control Nirvana for a short time, enough to...stab dad Relius in the abdomen.

The list of people she reacts to in any form is: Carl (obviously hurrdurr), Rachel (hostile), Valkenhayn (former enermies, but able to talk to), Tager (who has a similar mechanic to Nirvana's, which is why they "resonate"), v-13 (???, shakes near her), Λ-11 (same as ν-13), and Terumi (extremely hostile, definite enemies).

Ada Clover, Carl's sister, was a normal human before her body and soul were incorporated into Nirvana by their father. Her "strong spirit" made her soul prime material for making it into a Nox Nyctores. We currently know that she was a kind, caring person who never hesitated to help someone in need. Carl also wants to eat her cooking again...what is this I don't even.

Carl's main strength is in Nirvana. She can clap, punch up (Fermata), down, side, grab, throw with those long arms of hers (Con Anima), and can punch in quick succession (Rhapsody of Memories). Thanks to Continuum Shift buffs, she also has a nifty new projectile (Volante). She also has claw-like hands that can extend to stab the enemy (Con Brio, Con Fuoco). Nirvana is a beast to fight while you're in the air, and once you "land" near her during aerial combat, Carl and Nirvana will clap loop you to no end like they're playing volleyball. Carl's Astral Heat (Deus Ex Machina) is based on Nirvana , and it is a 10 second timebomb Nirvana creates from herself, and once time is up, unleashes a huge, rainbowcolored damaging explosion. Nirvana however, is sluggish and slow, and seems almost clumsy. It has been stated that she was "not designed for hurting others". Carl can call Nirvana to him via La Campanella and give her commands. She has her own health which depletes when she is used or damaged. It can regenerate over time and once it is gone, she will be decommissioned and will take a while to get back in action.

RelationshipsEdit

S-TierEdit

Ada Clover - SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIS, AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAADAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. SELF EXPLANATORY.

A-TierEdit

Actually close to, or fond of. This also means his sister trusts you too.

Canon

  • Bang Shishigami - another fellow vigilante! He's a ninja from Ikaruga. Apparently his...mentor. wat. But he kind of respects him, as he helped him out time to time.
  • Litchi Faye-Ling - treated him at a clinic. Knows Sis as Nirvana >:C In CS he...finally starts trusting her, after he kind of broke down and sobbed in her boobs. It was a pretty sweet moment...until his dad showed up and tried to kill both of them. Asshole.

Paradisa

  • Abel Nightroad - a priest who he just happened to meet one day. He kept being so nice to him, it made him even more suspicious. After the...alien parasites...he woke up in the church, meeting him. And the first thing Carl did when Abel suggested being friends? Rant about how adults are all liars, then tried to kill him. Except Nirvana wouldn't obey so he lost the match in literally half a second broke down crying. A hug was all he needed to confide in the priest more. Now they're cool. Kind of. SLINK GO
  • Peter Petrelli - some guy who took him to the clinic. And talks to his sister. SUSPICIOUS...but Sis says he's fine and probably one of the only people she kind of..."trusts".
  • Justinia - a princess who he is really rather fond of, more than he tells himself he should be. Her personality and elegance reminds him a lot of his sister. She has shown to be a kind person on many occasions, and truly enjoys her company. Had some sort of unhealthy obsession with her during the whole Slenderman thing (he saw her as his replacement sister okay) and might've even had some feelings but he's too dumb/emotionless/stupid to realize it. Gone.

B-TierEdit

Decent. Some fondness here, but as expected, null and void if you touch his sister.

Canon

  • Taokaka - a vigilante as well! Not very smart though. She's a strong beastman...ish...thing. She wants food all the time. ;; She's not bad though, and he finds comfort in the fact there's another vigilante here...or pseudo-vigilante. Or someone that even knows what Kagutsuchi is. Gone.
  • Tsubaki Yayoi - Upperclassman in the academy. A Wing of Justice. He actually rather liked her, but that didn't stop him from trying to extort information about his father out of her.
  • Makoto Nanaya - git off me ;; Upperclassman. Beastmanthing. Part of the Intelligence Department of the NOL. Liked hugging him in the academy days.
  • Noel Vermillion - tried to take her Nox in another timeloop or attempted to get information about Ragna out of her ;; Upperclassman in the academy. HER COOKING IS AWFUL. THAT MOUSSE WAS TERRIBLE.

Paradisa

  • Jilly Coppercorn - a woman who first woke him up in the library. He's had a few conversations with her since. She doesn't seem bad...then again, that's what all adults try to seem, according to Carl. goddamnit
  • Cloud Strife - some guy who asked about Ragna, and helped him out with he got turned into a popsicle by Jin. Gone.
  • Gold - showed him his pokeymans. They're interesting probably seither-mutated creatures.

C-TierEdit

Neutral feelings.

Canon

  • Ragna the Bloodedge - GIVE ME YOUR AZURE GRIMOIREEE!!11! No seriously, he's the entire reason he and his Sis are traveling to Ikaruga.

Paradisa

  • Halloween (Mordred) - teenage girl he met in the kitchen. Human who used to be a puppet. Can fight.

D-TierEdit

Irritating. He still won't attack unless provoked.

Canon

  • Iron Tager - dude this guy is whoahueg. Reminds Carl of his sister...not fully human but not fully mechanical either. Possibly because of the similar faux-causality core. Calls sis Nirvana too, and tries to take her away. He fights him in CS...only to...run away. Again. Herp.
  • v-13 - tried to fuse with Ragna. Interrupted her fusion with Ragna. she blew up sis ;_; Regains memories of another timeloop involving her...exploding his sister???
  • Rachel Alucard - some vampire witch loli who told him to take the Noxs and teleported him to her garden. MESSED WITH HIS SISTER, GIT OUT.
  • Hazama (Terumi) - One of the Six Heroes. Alternate end path...DO NOT WANT. It involved in a lot of trolling as well as his sister being shattered into pieces in front of him while he couldn't do anything but watch. Then he was thrown into the Cauldron's spire. great.
  • Jin Kisaragi - tried to take his Nox in another timeloop. Upperclassman in the academy. >:C also unintentionally tempted him with cookies. Thanks to him, Carl got Arctic Dungeon'd. To rub salt in the wound, HE MADE OUT WITH HIS SISTER DURING CHRISTMAS SHENANIGANS. GET. OUT. Gone. (Guess he got his wish.)

Paradisa

Relius TierEdit

  • Relius Clover - DADDDDYYYYY...SO MUCH HATE HERE HE DOESN'T EVEN. ENTIRE FAMILY IS DOLLS BECAUSE OF HIM.

Random infoEdit

  • See also:Cute Shotaro Boy, Dissonant Serenity, Marionette Master, Nice Hat, Brother Sister Team, Fragile Speedster
  • He will shank you if you try to harm his sis. Or at least react violently.
  • He can...talk to telephone booths and mailboxes with his glasses according to the special illustrations ingame gallery.
  • He likes eating cookies. Yeah. He prefers the soft, chewy kinds but he eats the crunchy ones more. It's because when he eats them, he makes a mess with the crumbs everywhere and his sister has to clean him up and take care of him. i find this kind of adorable okay don't look at me like that
