Charles Victor 'Vic Sage' Szasz AKA The Question
Once upon a time, a wise man dreamed he was a butterfly. He dreamed his life, flying from flower to flower. The colors. The smells. The wind caressing his wings… And when he awoke, he had a realization. He didn’t know if he was a man dreaming he was a butterfly… or a butterfly dreaming he was a man.

Handwriting This normally. This when he actually wants it legible.

It is your true face. It is as you see yourself and therefore if you die tonight, you die honestly. -Shiva
Curious. Above every other characteristic, Vic Sage is curious. Anything, from knowledge to experience, is subject to exploration, explanation. It’s not so much that he wants to know (after all, who wants to know how many died in that bombing last week or what they did to the little girl down the street before they killed her or who’s guilty and who’s innocent), but that he needs to know. He is driven by some unexplainable force to find and experience every truth in the world.
That is why he became a reporter. But reporting is restrictive and controlling. The only way he can ask all those little forbidden questions is under a mask. That is why he became the Question.
The Question, an identity that is both his blessing and his curse. When he is the Question (and, be sure, Vic Sage and the Question have never been the same man) he is free to do as he wishes, he is outside the law. He can find his answers. But those answers only lead to darker questions. What is it like to kill a man? What is it like to die? The Question is a man obsessed by the darkness in humanity, the existential quandaries of the world. He has stepped into the shadows and is only holding on to goodness by a finger.
But he will never slip completely. In those dark questions, he has found peace. In knowing humanity, his previously violent soul has calmed. He believes in the redemption of Man, and the overwhelming power to do what is right. Yes there is temptation, but that is not all. That is not the only option. He is the sort of righteous man who might be a white knight if his soul wasn’t quite so stained.
As he has aged, he has become an observer. Perhaps not as driven to ask questions he has found his own answers to, but more then willing to step into a life with potential. His methods are uncommon, pushing, challenging, a dryly sarcastic master for a new age of damaged children. He is there when they need him and, the moment they have found their own way, he is gone again, the flap of trench coat tails and butterfly wings the only hint that he was ever there at all.
He drifts in shadows and questions, a nameless soul who walks in two worlds, outside society but inside the city. A contradiction? Maybe. The truth? Most definitely.

So there was this kid found on the doorstep of a Catholic orphanage. They took him in and gave him a name and… abused him, as nuns are often wont to do. He grew up with something of a temper and an anti-authority sort of personality. Then he went to college and those personality flaws just got a thousand times worse. Also, somewhere in there he started smoking, only to quit the day he was kicked out of college for beating the snot out of his LSD dealer. Did I mention he didn’t like hallucinating? Well, he didn’t. He still doesn’t.
Despite getting kicked out of college, he got a job as a reporter. I guess he got a journalism degree at some point. He was pretty good at his job, except for the part where he was overly aggressive and editorialized basically every story he did. The boss wanted to fire him. The head exec for the network (I think) liked him. So he stayed. Yay.
Then he stumbled across a case involving ‘pseudoderm’ and, knowing he’d need to hide his identity, he went to its co-creator Tot and got a bit of it to use as a mask. After the case was solved, he never gave the mask back. Thus the Question was born, a new vigilante for the streets of Chicago.
Except then he went back to the horrible city where he grew up to check up on it. And it had gotten even worse, so he got himself another reporting job for KBEL and the Question continued on in Hub City.
Eventually the corruption in the streets disgusted and stressed him so much, he picked up smoking again. This only lasted for a little while though, as the nicotine screwed with the chemistry of his body and kept the mask from sealing properly. Less then a day after realizing this, he walked into an obvious trap, got his ass kicked by Lady Shiva, was shot in the head and finally tossed in the river to drown.
Luckily he was rescued by… the ass-kicker herself. Yeah, that’s one he’s still trying to figure out. But anyway. He went up into the mountains at her request to meet with Richard Dragon who trained him and helped him recuperate for a year. This was also the beginning of his reformation from the aggressive, nasty man he was to the much calmer, teacher-esque figure he became.
Some more stuff happened, he left Hub City, got his heart broken twice, did some drugs, developed mystical powers, got cancer, got an apprentice, and finally died… again… Yeeeup :|b

Vic on the other hand seems to have attended the Mickey Spillane School of Self Defence, garnering a major in Fist/Face Communications and a minor in Taking No Crap. -Here
The Costume
Edit
The most notable part of the Question's costume is the mask. When bonded to his face, it makes it seem like he doesn't have one. There might be the occasional shadow to hint at an expression but usually it's just a blank slate of skin where he should have features. The mask extends to his hairline, so he still has ears and hair and such, just no face. He keeps the mask in his belt buckle.
Also of note, after his clothes and hair are treated with a special chemical, they react to the same binary gas that bonds the mask to his face and change color. The clothes become blue while his hair becomes black.
Other Stuff
Edit
- Detective skillz
- Martial artist plus he can use what's around him
- Master of disguise
- Ridiculously flexible. Really. Ridiculously.
- Shaman. As in he can read chi patterns, 'walk in two worlds'. It’s implied that he is powerful enough to even manipulate and control souls after death. :|b Scary shit, man. He rarely uses this ability anymore though, as it seems to require the use of a psychotropic gas, and drugs are bad.
- The Van. More specifically, the files in the van. He’s seriously got something on everything, common knowledge, less common knowledge, stuff that you probably wouldn’t ever want anyone knowing knowledge. Of course, this only applies to the DC cast… BUT contact me here or by PM if you really don’t want him knowing anything about your character! <3

Aristotle ‘Tot’ Rodor Best friend, father figure and the creator of his mask. Admires him… so much… especially for putting up with his crap for so long
Bruce Wayne/Batman Respects him probably more then any other superhero on the market, but he’ll still poke at him for his own amusement. A hallucination of Batman was the one who told him to value his own life, especially if he was going to continue being a superhero.
Clark Kent/Superman Kind of… afraid of him? But not so much that he would stop doing whatever he’s doing because of him.
Helena Bertinelli/Huntress Honestly, he doesn’t know. Protégé, sure. Lover, certainly. Richard called her his other half. She led him along and then did the one thing he asked her not to do, and he left after that. He might still love her a little, but it’s not like he’ll ever go back to her…
Isadore ‘Izzy’ O’Toole Previously corrupt Hub City cop, who straightened out under the Question’s watch. Has a sort of vague fondness for him. He’s a good guy, when he tries to be
Jackie Connally Myra’s daughter, who he took care of for a year in Brazil. She… changed him… for the better he hopes. He loved her like his own. Her death hit him harder then he really cares to admit.
Kate Kane/Batwoman Smokin’ hot. Yowza. Criminy, Renee. Why did you get rid of her again?
Lady Shiva Can and will kick his ass. Respects her. Isn’t quite afraid of her. She makes him painfully curious sometimes
Lois Lane Uhmmmm… Complicated. Would like to just… avoid her forever if at all possible. Had a crush on her in college while… less then mentally stable. Might have stalked her a little bit. Moved on for awhile, but when his sanity dropped off again he… convinced himself he was in love with her like before. Yeah. Complicated.
Marco Good kid. Probably the closest thing he had to a side kick or a partner for a little while
Myra Connally Fermin Lost love, or some other sentimental crap. He would’ve married her, but he blew it. No sense dwelling on it now…
Oliver Queen/Green Arrow Worked together a couple times. Would do it again if he had the chance
Renee Montoya Protégé. She reminds him of himself, except with more potential. She could be great. He hopes she is now.
Richard Dragon Sensei ;A; Sensei who’s got no problem beating the crap out of him when he’s being stupid, BUT THAT’S THE BEST KIND, right? Right.
Theodore ‘Ted’ Kord/Blue Beetle The Dan to his Rorschach? Maybe a little, if only in that Charlie seems to keep a creepy, stalker-ish eye on the poor man sometimes.

- While he generally doesn’t admit it, the Question and Charlie are two different people. Charlie is very human and very flawed. The Question is more like a force of nature, calm and ever present and absolutely undeniable. It isn’t so much that Charlie puts on the mask and becomes the Question. It’s more like the Question uses him for a time, and Charlie projects a little of himself onto it. So yeah… psychics and empaths and such can feel free to notice that the no-faced man seems like a more complete person then the one with a face.
- Absolutely terrified of hallucinating. He will curl into a little gibbering ball if he realizes he is.
- Never been in the Justice League, Justice Society, Titans nor any other team in his universe. Except L.A.W…. once… for like a week…
- While he knows his real name now… he doesn’t really identify with it and will probably respond to… just about anything you want to call him, unless it’s particularly insulting.
It’s a trick question, Renee… Not who are you… but who are you going to become? Time to change… like a butterfly
