"Your mind is like a blank canvas painted over with several layers of melancholy."

- The Mind Reader

If there was one word to describe Dextera, it would be weary. Having died countless times in the Neuro Tower only to be brought back and living in a distorted world filled with just as twisted people will do that to you after awhile. As a result, things like death, torture and so on will barely faze him. ‘Death’ is an accepted fact to him and if someone threatened his life, Dextera would just shrug. It’s not overconfidence in his abilities but more that if he knows he’s going to die then it’s simply time to die. He’s heavy with misery, suffering, fear and has gone through everything many times. The sin that Dextera can’t remember is gnawing at his heart and the guilt he feels because of it is heavy on his mind, along with all the questions he has because of his memory loss.

On the flip side, however, Dextera tries to always find something to smile about. If someone pointed out the darker parts of Paradisa, for example, Dextera would instead focus on the fact that there are so many people to be friends with. This is mostly an attempt to not fall into insanity and if he was left alone forever, Dextera would become insane. He needs something happy to cling onto to keep his sanity in check and would bend over backwards to keep a friend happy. It’s very easy to become friends with him and he can be pulled into most situations without much effort, though if Dextera realizes that it’ll bring harm to people he’ll stand against it. The knowledge of other humans he possesses is rather limited and because of that and the fact that he’s a mute will make most of his conversations rather awkward, though he’ll most likely enjoy them anyways.

HistoryEdit

“I killed my big brother. I killed you. I killed the world.”

– Dextera

Dextera was the smaller and weaker of a set of conjoined twins. He and his brother were attached at the hip, though shared a heart. Because of this, only one could be conscious at a time. They played chess, taking turns when one would wake up, and writing notes for the other sibling for when it was "their turn". However, one heart could not sustain the both of them, and both were dying. The choice was made to separate the two, resulting in his brother's death.

Elsewhere, The Absolute God had returned to the world. In Baroque, God is a physical entity. The Absolute God uses items called Consciousness Orbs to filter the world—Each orb is attached to another in a way, and ideas, information, and items can be transferred through them. It's said that they gather at the bottom floor of a building known as the Neuro Tower—the sanctuary of the Religious Order of Malkuth, and the place where God dwells.

However, due to the Order of Malkuth experimenting with consciousness orbs and the transfer of information, the Absolute God was beginning to lose grasp of reality—and when God's reality shifts, the reality of the world shifts. The common delusions that people held began to grow and physically affect them, twisting their bodies and distorting them. the Order of Malkuth took it upon themselves to Save God and try and reverse the process.

They failed.

Not everyone within the order agreed, however. The Archangel, for example, took it upon himself to pour more distorted data into the consciousness orbs (as well as in false consciousness orbs created to transfer only information,) God began to go madder and madder. The Archangel's plan was to remove Pain from God, and create a Mad God completely incapable of realizing her own Insanity. He then wished to harvest and cultivate her Pain into an ampule and fire it within her, letting the shards of God's Pain explode into her and destroying God herself. He gave orders to Dr. Angelicus and Longneck to begin removing Pain from God. (Pain became embodied by small, cherub-like creatures known as The Littles.)

Archangel wished to use the Idea Sephiras of God to create a whole new world, one without Pain—one where there was no pain of distortion, anything. An Idea Sephira is the core of a person, the very embodiment of everything they are into a small crystal.

On the other side of the Order, a high-ranking group known as the Koriels had a different idea. The Koriel's consisted of 12 members, one of which being Dextera. Rather than allow The Archangel to destroy God and create a new world, the Koriels wished to fuse a human with God and give her words. They wished to understand God's will, rather than simply destroy her. For this, however, a human would have to be fused with The Absolute God.

Dextera was chosen, as he had already lost half of himself. The Koriel attempted the Dabar fusion on May 14th, 2032—and it nearly succeeded, too. For a moment, Dextera had fused with the Absolute God before it was interrupted by The Archangel.

Dextera and God were torn apart, much as he and his brother had been. Dextera lost his memories and ability to speak due to the failed fusion, but had gained the God's ability of purification. The Absolute God gained the ability to speak, but there was now a void from where Dextera should have been. She created two Divinities to fill that void and use her ability to speak: Alice and Eliza, who would wander the Neuro Tower. Dextera also (somehow) gained the consciousness of his deceased older brother within him due to consciousness orbs. (That part isn't exactly explained well.)

The interrupted fusion also caused The Blaze—a massive Heat Wave that overtook the entire world, speeding up the distortion of the world. Everyone became a Meta-Being or a Twisted One, as the God's insanity ruined the world.

The Archangel labeled the Koriels as traitors and locked them within Confinement Coffins within the Neuro Tower. Dextera, however, he kept. Because of Dextera's ability to purify (and his absence of memories,) he could be used to further Archangel's plans in purifying the Absolute God. To ensure that the task could be completed, Archangel cloned Dextera.

He cloned him a lot.

Each clone was instilled with the 'memory' of a sort of test-run— Appearing on the surface of the Outer World, meeting the Archangel and receiving the Angelic Rifle, and repeatedly being told that he must go to the bottom floor of the Neuro Tower and purify God to atone for his Sin of ruining the world. They also retain the memory of the clone before them due to a consciousness orb—so if one were to die or fail in some way; the next would begin again at the surface, starting over with no experience or equipment, but with all the information gained by the previous.

In a way, (in game), Dextera can't "die"—because his consciousness will be transferred to the next clone in line. Despite this, though, as he descends the tower, Alice notes that he's not the same 'him' that she saw before.

As Dextera descends the tower, he meets plenty of characters- The Mindreader, the Box Bearer, and even Dr. Angelicus—but the most noteworthy are the Koriels in their confinement coffins (who beg to be killed and purified and leave Dextera with traces of information about the Dabar fusion,), Alice (who gets upset with Dextera that he doesn't remember her,) and Eliza (Who begs for Pure Water).

When he gets to -1600 cubits down the tower, though, Dextera finds The Archangel—impaled upon a massive consciousness orb, stuck. The Archangel informs him that, yes, it is Dextera's fault that the Blaze occurred, and the distortion of the world is his sin—one that can only be absolved by entering the Orb Archangel is impaled upon and purifying the Absolute God with the Angelic Rifle.

Dextera does so. As he grabs the God's Idea Sephira, he comments that he killed his big brother, Archangel, God, and the world—but he chooses not to give the Sephira to Archangel to create a new world. Instead, he just wishes to restart this one.

It doesn't work. The next clone is infused with the previous ones' memories and released from the laboratory to meet again with The Archangel, receive the Angelic Rifle, and again descend the Neuro Tower to complete his Sisyphean task.

This continues. A lot. Any time Dextera is killed by the Meta Beings in the tower or attempts to restart the world using the Absolute God's Idea Sephira, the next clone is given the previous one's memories (Accumulating as they go,) and released again. Even the Twisted Ones on the Outer World begin to comment that he's crazy for going to the tower to 'die again' repeatedly.

It’s around here that Paradisa takes him when he’s killed yet again.

AbilitiesEdit

"After all, he's the only one with the power to purify the Mad God."

- Brain

Dextera's main power is the power of purification. This takes some explaining:

In his world, people become twisted by Baroques, a delusion they hold close to themselves. It soon twists their bodies into something grotesque, eventually distorting them so they become either Twisted Ones or Meta-Beings. Twisted Ones retain their minds while Meta-Beings don't, becoming monsters that violently lash out at anything that disturbs their reality.

Dextera has the power to purify someone of their Baroque, severing them from their delusion by killing them. It's the only way to free someone, be it a Twisted One or a Meta-Being (and it's never mentioned what happens if they're killed some other way). He can purify with his bare hands or a weapon - Dextera's expertise lying with broadswords, great swords or rifles.

He can also use the Angelic Rifle a gun that has an even greater purifying power. It's capable of destroying a Twisted One or a Meta-Being in one shot. It's meant to purify the Absolute God. It can only hold five rounds and more cannot be obtained.

*Note: Dextera's power of purification was taken by Paradisa. By extention he can't use his Angelic Rifle either.

One final power is that he can regenerate as long as he keeps himself healthy. Burns, cuts and scrapes heal in a few minutes but anything more severe needs some Fluid to speed up the regeneration (and it doesn't feel all that pleasant). Dextera can't regenerate something like a severed arm.

CR ChartEdit

"Do you want to be saved?"

- The Archangel

CanonEdit

The Archangel: He's the person who gave Dextera his mission and is pretty much the first person who gives him a stright answer. In reality, he's actually a grade A jerk and the real cause of the Blaze. Not that...Dextera knows.

Alice: A girl that knows Dextera -- though he doesn't remember her. Seems bothered by that, not that he can blame her. Told him his name.

Eliza: A woman who's looking for 'Pure Water'. Dextera thinks she's afraid of him for some reason.

Phantom: The spirit of a young boy that appears in the Neuro Tower on occasion. Asked if Dextera forgot their 'scar' but he doesn't know what that means.

"Thirteen": This is someone he didn't actually met back home. While under his child loss, Dextera mentioned having a brother named "Thirteen". Has no idea that the Phantom and "Thirteen" are one in the same.

ParadisaEdit

Ashura-ou: Felix’s roommate and boyfriend, though Dextera isn’t aware of the latter. They’ve talked a number of times and Ashura looked after his derpy self when he fell unconscious after Felix rescued him from his headspace.

Abel Nightroad:

Cain Nightlord:

Emil: A blind boy who showed him a piano and helped him when he was stuck under a bookshelf.

Deathwing: Knows him in his shadow and 'human' form. Their first meeting was spent digging around in Dextera's head and Deathwing offered him a permanent death in exchange for help. Dextera said no and the dragon said he's still going to kill him. Umm....

Felix Harrowgate: Someone who hired him as a houseboy and is rapidly becoming rather close to Dextera. He saved the mute when he was stuck in his headspace and encouraged him to live when Dextera fell into another bout of depression. Basically a much nicer Archangel if Dextera was aware his was a jerk.

Fluttershy: Knocked a few bookshelves on him. Yay.

Grimoire Weiss: A floating book he rescued from a washing machine. He’s nice enough to act as a dictionary even if some of the things Weiss says go over Dextera’s head.

Kate Kane: The first person Dextera met in Paradisa. She called for someone to help him when she realized that he was hurt.

Nanako Dojima: A nice little girl that taught him a bit about flower circles and green tea. Should talk to her some more.

Nudge: Another nice person who Dextera met while on his first loss. She helped him find different flowers, sparking his interests in them, and they also talked a bit about birds. He isn’t aware that conversation means more to Nudge than he realizes.

Sakura: A fellow mute, though by loss than natural. They spoke when Dextera first showed up in Paradisa and then on the pirate ship when the world changed. She also did a good job kicking him out of his depressive mood after his child loss.

Sollux: A ‘troll’ who he met a few times. He was the one who suggested that Dextera may be able to fix his voice.

Vivi: A young girl who he told about Alice and Eliza.

Zelman: Someone he met in the lobby once.

TrivaEdit

  • Has died 165 times in the Neuro Tower before being pulled to Paradisa. This makes him the 165th clone to be made.
