The first thing someone would notice about Gordon is that he doesn't speak. As a child, he skipped quite a few grades due to his intelligence. This left him as a small kid in classes with much bigger children. Since he knew that whatever he said when he opened his mouth would lead to being teased and sometimes even beat up, he learned that keeping quiet was better than talking. As he progressed through his college career, earning a doctorate along the way, the respect his peers had for his opinions and ideas led to his tongue finally loosening a bit, enough that he took up a teaching position to help pay off loans. He became frustrated when he saw that academia wouldn't get him any closer to teleportation research anytime soon, and when he was offered a position at the Black Mesa Research Facility, he accepted gladly. After the occurrence of a resonance cascade during testing ripped a hole in the dimensional fabric of his world, the resultant trauma caused a severe relapse, to the point where it's difficult for him to talk about even the most cursory things. Writing is no problem, of course, but the words just won't come.
As mentioned above, Gordon's also very intelligent; due to his fast progress in school, he completed work for his Ph.D. in theoretical physics with a thesis tilted Observation of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen Entanglement on Supraquantum Structures by Induction Through Nonlinear Transuranic Crystal of Extremely Long Wavelength (ELW) Pulse from Mode-Locked Source Array. He is an atheist, and doesn't hold the slightest belief in the supernatural. In his mind, magic is just technology that people don't fully understand yet.
He also has a very wry sense of humor, which doesn't usually click well with other people. In fact, they may find it off-putting or take it the wrong way. The fact that he isn't very good at interacting socially with people certainly doesn't help that. It's led to Gordon being more of a loner than anything else, but the few friendships he does have are strong, and he would do anything to protect those friends. With everything he's seen at Black Mesa, that's especially important to him. And though he can't think about those events, much less talk about them, they weigh heavily in his mind and his wise green eyes at all times.

- Gordon was originally planned to have a long beard and to be tubby. This alpha model has been dubbed by fans as "Ivan the Space Biker."
- Also, in the menu screen for Half-Life, Gordon has a pony tail. However, he firmly denies that image exists. He doesn't like ponytails, thank-you-very-much.
