- Conan has a habit of never revealing some of his more esoteric knowlege until the moment it is needed. And it is impossible to predict. During cases he has revealed himself to be fluent in braille, knowledgable about subjects from chemistry and physics to European history and the effect of poisons on the body, and capable of driving and piloting a variety of vehicles. Quotes:
Edit
Mysteries are just puzzles created by the human mind. If you think about them long enough you can work out a logical solution. But no matter how many times they try to explain it to me I can never figure out why one person would kill another. It just doesn't make sense to me at all.
Added by LeloipaI can't help getting excited. The more baffling a case is, the more thrilling it is to me.
Someday I'll definitely return. Even if I die. That's why I want you to wait for me.
In this science of deduction there is no first or last, no greater or lesser. And that's because there is only one truth.

Added by LeloipaA detective who corners a culprit with logic and allows them to commit suicide is no different than a murderer.
There are many reasons to kill someone. I can understand that with my head, but it doesn't make sense to me at all. But as for saving someone, a logical mind isn't needed. Right?
If something like ESP or magic really existed then we would be living in a world with no need for detectives or crimes!

History:
Edit
Shinichi Kudo was the only son of a world-famous mystery writer who occasionally consulted for the police and an equally famous actress. He was a very intelligent child who was fascinated by mysteries and detective work from a very early age. But unlike his father he didn't want to write about detectives. He wanted to be one. Shinichi idolized Sherlock Holmes and devoted himself to acquiring all the skills of the famous fictional detective.
But as intelligent and skilled as he became, Shinichi had difficulty understanding people. He had one good friend from his childhood, Ran Mouri, but he never really made any connections with anyone else in his age group. The other students admired him for his intelligence and soccer skills, but didn't understand his fascination with mysteries or why he had quit the soccer team in favor of detective work.
When he was 14 his parents decided to move to America. Shinichi refused to go, because that would mean leaving Ran behind. And so Shinichi began to live by himself in their house in Japan. That same year he solved his first murder case. Over the next three years Shinichi would travel all over Japan solving murders and crimes, building a reputation as a genius high school detective. To the press he became known as the Holmes of the modern era and the savior of the Japanese police force. He even had a brief encounter with the infamous phantom thief Kid and came very close to catching him. At the same time, Shinichi slowly began to realize that he was in love with Ran. Although neither of them were ready to say anything about it. It was like his future as a great detective was already set.
But that all changed one day at an amusement park when Shinichi was seventeen. He had agreed to take Ran there as a reward for winning the city karate tournament. Naturally, the trip was interrupted by a murder on the rollercoaster. After solving the case (strangled by a string of pearls and a wire hook) Shinichi saw a pair of men in black clothing acting suspiciously. After telling Ran he would be back soon, Shinichi followed the suspicious men. But he got caught.
While he was busy photographing one of the men carrying out a gun deal, the other snuck behind him and hit him over the head. Because the police were still nearby due to the earlier murder they couldn't risk a gun shot. So the two men forced him to swallow an experimental poison that they claimed would kill without a trace. Shinichi only had time to take note that they referred to each other as Gin and Vodka before the pain overwhelmed him.
When he woke up he was the size of a seven-year-old.
After a panicked few hours, Shinichi made it home and convinced his next door neighbor, an inventor named Agasa, of his identity. The two talked and began to plan what to do. The only thing they were sure of was that no one could know that Shinichi was still alive. Because an organization of that type might kill anyone who knew about them.
But before they could plan any further Ran arrived to search for the missing Shinichi. While Agasa distracted her, Shinichi hurriedly rummaged through his desk and put on a pair of his father's glasses to disguise his face. Ran instantly picked him up and asked his name. In a panicked moment of inspiration, Shinichi picked a name from two books lying nearby. Edogawa, from the author Edogawa Ranpo. And Conan, from Arthur Conan Doyle.
In the ensuing confusion, Agasa invented a story that Conan was a distant relative and asked Ran to take care of him for a while. On the way to Ran's home she told Conan that she was in love with Shinichi.
And that was Conan's new life. Living with the girl he was in love with, but having to act as her little brother as he tried to investigate the organization that had shrunk him.
But the murder cases didn't stop coming just because he was small. The only difference was that now no one would listen to him. With the help of Agasa Conan quickly came up wih a plan. Ran's father was a detective, but one who was prone to jumping to easy conclusions. Conan would put him to sleep with a tranquilizer dart from his watch, and then use a voice changer hidden in his bowtie to convince everyone that Kogoro Mouri was solving the crime. Ran's father quickly began to gain a reputation as Sleeping Kogoro, the detective who solved crimes while pretending to sleep.
Conan started school. First Grade. And was quickly befriended by a group of three real children. Mostly without his input. They called themselves the detective boys and began dragging Conan into grade school mysteries and investigating haunted houses.
One day he came home to find another high school detective waiting in the agency. This was Heiji Hattori from Osaka, and he had come to find out what had happened to Shinichi Kudo. Heiji proclaimed that Kudo was his rival in deduction and that he was going to stay right there causing trouble until Kudo showed up. Naturally a murder case occurred immediately. In the ensuing investigation, Conan and Heiji repeatedly ran into each other. But Conan had a severe cold and fever, made worse by the chinese alcohol that Heiji had given him disguised as medicine. When he collapsed Ran put him in bed and called for a doctor. Before the doctor arrived Conan vanished.
And Shinichi reappeared. The combined alcohol and fever had briefly overpowered the poison. He stayed as Shinichi just long enough to solve the case, and then returned to being Conan while barely avoiding discovery. Heiji returned home.
A few weeks later Conan met Heiji again, this time at a Sherlock Holmes party with two murders. Heiji became suspicious at Conan's intelligence and deduction style. When Conan knocked him out to solve the case, Heiji woke up early and pretended to stay unconscious. The case solved, Heiji confronted Conan and blackmailed him into revealing everything.
And from that point on, Heiji and Shinichi quickly became best friends.
Soon afterwards Conan had another encounter with the Phantom Thief Kid. At first he was uninterested, but that changed once he got hold of the thief's riddle. As Conan put it 'I've become interested in this strange retro moonlight thief who warns people before he steals from them'. The following encounter became a draw, as the thief escaped but without the targeted gem. And started off a strange not-friendship between the child detective and the thief. They would have many repeat encounters, most of which would end in draws. To the point that Kid would begin announcing heists solely to have a duel of wits with Conan.
A few months later, Conan met a strange girl who began to live with Agasa. This was Ai Haibara. In reality her name was Shiho Miyano, code name Sherry, and she was a former member of the same organization that shrank him. Sherry had been born into the organization and she was the one who had developed the poison, Apotoxin 4869. But when the organization killed her sister she rebelled. She had already had some suspicions abot the possible side effects of the poison, due to some strange test results. So she had confirmed Kudo Shinichi's death in the organization's files and taken the poison herself before escaping.
She began to work on an antidote for the Apotoxin and joined the Detective Boys.
Ran began to get suspicious over Shinichi's similarity to Conan. Then Conan was shot in an encounter with some robbers. At the hospital Ran revealed that she knew Conan had the same bloodtype as Shinichi. As he recovered, Conan seriously began to consider telling her. But then Haibara showed up and warned him that if Ran found out and investigated, the organization would have her killed.
Conan talked to Heiji about this, and on his own initiative Heiji decided to disguise himself as Shinichi and talk to Ran while Conan was in sight. He was immediately found out when a murder happened at the school play. Only for the real Shinichi to show up as the masked knight at the play. Haibara had given him a temporary antidote and then disguised herself as Conan to conceal the truth from Ran. For the next day Shinichi lived his old life. He invited Ran to the restaurant where his parents had gotten engaged, and was preparing to confess his feelings to her. But then a murder happened. And the antidote wore off before he could get back to her.
Around this point Conan began to discover some information about the Organization. At a party the organization member Bisco was killed. It became clear that an actress named Chris Vineyard was somehow involved. Later a new English teacher at Ran's school named Jodie Saintemillion who bore a strong resemblance to Chris Vineyard began behaving suspiciously.
After much confusion and suspicions, everything came to a head on a night with a full moon. What followed was the kind of confusion that an only come from a situation when the skills of at least three different masters of disguise and at least five separate plans all collide at the same time. By the end of the night it was revealed that both an American FBI agent and a Black Organization agent named Vermouth had been in disguise. Vermouth got away, but without her objective. Conan made some valuable contacts with the FBI and acquired Vermouth's promise that she would give up. In a postscript she revealed that she was an old friend of Conn's mother and that she considered Shinichi to be 'the silver bullet that defeats evil in one shot'.
Conan later becomes involved in several more FBI operations against the Black Organization. The agents don't know that he is anything more than a genius first grader, but they give him the code name Cool Kid. Some time later he assists them in masterminding a plan to insert a CIA undercover agent into the Black Organization.

Ai Haibara It's complicated. Very complicated. They're friends and allies and mutual trolls to each other. Not siblings, but there is an element of that to their friendship. It's just one of those relationships that defies description.
Ran Mouri Love of his life, not that she knows that. Shinichi has been best friends with Ran for more than ten years and she is the single most importnt person in his life. His main reason for wanting to find a cure so desperately. As Conan he has been forced to take the role of little brother, and he puts up with all the humiliation that involves without much complaint. It's all he can do,after all. When he has tokeep lying to her.
