background

"We used to be humans. Normal humans.
Just a bunch of regular human kids like you'd see anywhere."
Once upon a time, there was a young boy and his older sister. They were normal human children, really, with a pretty average life (though it is implied that they have no parents)…and then they were brought to a laboratory as part of “Project Snow White.” A project designed to turn people—normal human children—into weapons in order to fight the “Legions,” people who had changed and gone berserk as a result of a mysterious disease known as the White Chlorination Syndrome. During this time, the two of them were treated like guinea pigs; however, there was one scientist that actually treated them well, as though they were her own children, and so Emil considers her to be his “mother,” in a sense. Through experimentation with magic, it was found that the boy’s sister was the best choice for a weapon they had—the sixth body born as a weapon through these experiments. Number 6, unfortunately, went berserk, and the scientists had no choice but to make her brother into a weapon as well, in order to seal her. And so, Emil became the seventh creation of the scientists, with the power of petrification.
Unfortunately, Emil was unable to control this power, so anything he looks at will turn to stone. Knowing that he was a danger to anyone he came close to, he lived alone in the manor that was built above the laboratory where his sister’s sealed body remained, just him and a (possibly-robot) butler, with bandages over his eyes to keep him from hurting anyone that may have come close and a lack of memory regarding his life as an experiment. And then, over 1300 years later, a man named Nier and his two companions, a talking book named Grimoire Weiss, and a young woman, possessed by a demonic creature called a Shade, named Kaine, arrived at his manor. Summoned by Emil’s butler, who had enlisted their help in ridding Emil of what they thought was just an unfortunate “curse,” caused by the Shades, the crew not only managed to find a book (written in code, though) that may have had some information, but also befriended Emil. Because of Nier’s willingness to help Emil out and treat him kindly, and Kaine’s helping him to have some faith in himself and see his eyes as something more than just a burden on both others and himself, he really grew attached to them, seeing them as his first real friends.
personality
Edit
"You told me once that my eyes had value, and that I shouldn't be ashamed of them!
You told me that even a life such as mine had purpose!"

Added by KirschwassersThat’s not to say that he’s not normally a kind person; Emil cares about everyone, really, which is why he lived in solitude for so long; he would never want to hurt another person, even when the situation puts himself in danger. That’s also why he wears the blindfold; even if his problem may make things difficult, he puts the safety of others before his own. He hates the idea of hurting or killing people, either directly or indirectly. Even if people are unkind to him, he simply accepts it and refuses to hold it against them, no matter how much it may upset him to be treated that way.
As can be guessed from his way of living, Emil is more than a little bit naïve, and is actually quite childish. Despite his age, he never really mentally grew up all the way, and acts quite like a sheltered child who doesn’t know much about the world. He’s easily fascinated by things, has a pretty childish/downright lame sense of humor, and seems to lack a verbal filter at times. A lot of his worldviews may actually be seen as somewhat feminine, as well. He wants to be the main character’s bride, gets very excited around the time of another character’s wedding, and tends to consider a lot of things very romantic, finding things like that to be very interesting. He’s also pretty honest, and not exactly the best liar around; though he tries to be truthful most of the time, his true feelings aren’t really that difficult to figure out, even when he's not.

Added by KirschwassersAnd despite his surface immaturity, he is quite in touch with his own feelings, whether it’s his consideration of Kaine as an older sister figure in his life, or his feelings on Nier, which lean more towards love. However, though he does have clear and strong feelings towards his friends, his own self-esteem and self-worth are probably in need of a bit of work. He doesn’t entirely have trouble thinking of himself as someone that should be kept away from others, though it causes him a lot of emotional pain, because of his powers, and is genuinely surprised at the kind treatment he receives from Nier and Kaine. In a sense, he’s kind of ashamed of who he is, and it really takes the affirmation of others for him to realize that he does have some worth as a human—really, he’s not beyond help, but he just needs a little bit of work in the self-esteem department.
Once he does get that help, though, he really is a devoted friend, and pretty much will do anything for them, and makes his whole…purpose revolve around them, as he never really had much of a purpose until then. However, he might get a bit…too attached to people, especially early on, because he’ll always have that mindset that he is to be feared and isn’t worthy of kindness, so a lot of people may end up being considered a big sister or…possible love interest. However, it also means he’ll go to just about any lengths for those people, and will look up to them more than any others. He’s a good kid, really, despite his naïveté, and he always means well.

"It might be fun to put my eyes to good use for once!"
- Cannot read or write. He's been functionally blind for long enough that it just...would not go well. Same goes for cooking. Please never ask him to do this.
- Apparently has really good magic resistance! Yay!
- He really likes spaghetti. This is a stupid random fact.
- Despite the fact that he looks...and acts like a child, he doesn't really like being called one: "I’m much more of an adult than you guys! I can even use the washroom at night all by myself!"
- Word of God says he is interested in dudes.
- He has a really stupid sense of humor. Like, bad puns stupid.
