Is Paradisa alive?
Not really. It's conscious, but it can't really think in a sentient fashion. However, it can influence those who live on it, and it takes full advantage of this fact.
It is by turns infinitely benevolent and depthlessly maleficent. What it needs most in order to continue existing are the memories, hopes, dreams, desires, precious things, and suffering of sapient beings; it not only needs them, it relishes in taking them. It deceives the characters in subtle ways (not in the least by presenting a place of flawless beauty and peace in which they can live forever) so that it may take what it needs from them without their knowledge.
What is the castle like?
The castle is like huge. It's like infinity, more precisely. Self-contained infinity.
Its official name is Cair Paradisa, the Infinite Fortress. It looks fairly large from the outside, but it's even bigger on the inside.
For a complete description of the castle, see The Castle.
Is there any kind of currency in Paradisa?
Yes. The currency used in the city is known as the Caiso.
Can characters share a room together?
If both players agree to it, then yes, one character may move in with another character. The Castle is happy to accommodate. Feel free to note this on the New Characters page and a mod will take care of it. :)
What if a character refuses to live in their room in the castle?
Even if a character does not live in the room assigned to them in the castle, they will still have one with their nameplate on it. If Billy lives in the city and a plot traps characters in the castle, he might find himself magically back in his room. Hopefully he decorated it before he left!
Can residents alter the nameplates on their doors?
Each room belonging to a resident has a nameplate stating who the room belongs to. While they can be removed, they will simply reappear within a span of a few hours. If one wishes to cover up the name, that is fine.
What if my character wants to find a job?
If a character would like to find a job, they can seek employment from fellow residents that currently own businesses. Otherwise, they are free to assume that they found a job in the city. There is no official process for this.
What happens if a resident dies?
When characters die, they stay dead for two weeks and acquire an additional permanent loss. Please see What Happens When They Die? for more information.

Can the characters ever regain what they lost when they came to Paradisa?
Officially, no. It remains lost forever; the world essentially ate it.
Unofficially, who knows? If anyone ever comes up with a plausible plot reason for the characters to get their prices back, things may change.
But as far as anyone knows, the characters' precious things are lost to the ravenous void at the heart of Paradisa.
- Losses can be switched if a character dies, provided that the mods approve it.
If a character lost the memory of a person or a specific thing, yet there are other people close to this character who still know of that same person/thing, can the character be told about the person/thing again?
They can. But they'll never recall the exact memories of that person/thing that they had before. In the case of losing memories of a person, the character's relationship with that person will never be quite the same again — it may become similar, but it'll "feel" different.
What happens if a character is dropped?
The dropped character disappears from the world. Paradisa kicked him or her out because he or she did something that the world didn't like. Maybe his or her memories/emotions/precious things had a bad aftertaste.
Upon leaving Paradisa, the character has whatever was taken from him/her upon his/her arrival returned to him/her. If the character is picked up again, this allows his or her new player to choose a different loss for the character upon their return to Paradisa. The character in question will remember nothing about his/her prior experiences in Paradisa, also allowing the new player to form new character relationships without worrying about any created by the old player.
Other characters are free to notice the character's disappearance and to be surprised when they return. The returning character will not recall anyone they met during their previous stay in Paradisa.
Can I apply for a non-human character?
Paradisa is not picky about its residents! Often times, residents can be aliens, animals, and races of all kinds. You do not need to make your character "humanized" when applying.
What if I want to apply for a nameless character?
If you wish to play an unnamed protagonist, or someone who is not directly referred to by a specific name, you may still apply for them but will have to come up with a name for them. (Or you may have their name become their loss!)
Can I use samples from a previous application for my Paradisa application?
As long as the sample provides us with a good idea of your grasp of the character we allow you to use previously written pieces. Keep in mind though, that we still might request a second sample if we want to see a bit more of your writing.
As for the setting, we prefer something that is set in canon (but not an existing scene), or set in Paradisa.
What if I want to change my character's journal?
If you want to use a different journal, just remove the old one and join with the new one! You can reply to the New Character post with the new journal name, just so none of us accidentally decline the request to join.
What is the difference between "Canon AU" and simply "AU?" Can I apply for an AU character?
"Canon AU" are basically published AUs. For example, DC Comics dabbles in a lot of canon AUs, such as an earth where all the characters are evil: because it appears in published material related to the original canon, it is seen as a "Canon AU", so someone could apply as Evil!Batman or something along those lines.
However, we don't allow people to app AU versions they've made up that have no canon grounding.
Can my character recognize someone from a specific fandom?
Some characters are from Earth or some place that would otherwise know of some of the fandoms represented in Paradisa; perhaps the character is an anime enthusiast, or Superman is a pop culture figure in their world. Unfortunately, even if its canon for your characters to know something or someone as fictional, the instant one enters Paradisa they lose all memory of specific things like that. This is largely to avoid the "YOU’RE A FICTIONAL CHARACTER!" business.
However, your character’s pop culture can easily be altered; perhaps instead of Superman they have some other important, iconic superhero who runs around in blue tights, and saves the world. It is simply a matter of avoiding names and keeping it to “that’s like something out of a comic book/tv show/movie I love!” instead of “you are from a comic book/tv show/movie I love!”
When you simply HAVE to reference pop culture (because it is IC for the character to mention it, or talk about it, and it can't be worked around), change the names and canon name and avoid close details.
For example:
- Death Note, about Light Yagami, becomes Demise Pad, a manga about Bright Yagami.
- Dragonball Z becomes Lizardorb V.
- Superman becomes Galaxy Angel.
- Desperate Housewives becomes Anxious Working Moms.
- Repeat as necessary.
Fandom-Specific Questions
Edit
Bleach
Edit
Since souls in Bleach canon can interact with the world just like living beings, do they still need to be resurrected by Paradisa?
Putting them in a gigai should solve the problem, if you're not willing to give them a regular old body again.
Kingdom Hearts Series
Edit
Are KH characters who are also Final Fantasy characters available for application?
Yes. Their backstories are almost always different enough from their FF counterparts that they count as a completely separate character — albeit one who looks and sounds almost exactly like his or her counterpart.
And Disney characters?
Disney characters are only applicable from their original canons, NOT their Kingdom Hearts origins. This is because the Disney characters' histories don't change other than encountering Sora.
Main characters with an AU past like Mickey, Donald, Goofy, etc. are an exception since they do have a specific canon within the game that could be used.
Do the Nobodies get hearts now that they're alive?
Yes, along with all the attendant emotions.
What happens if a Nobody tries to create a darkness portal? Doesn't that mean they can escape Paradisa?
Haha, no. They can't get off that easily.
Using a darkness portal to attempt to escape will either a) land the Nobody in some completely random part of Paradisa or b) land him/her exactly back where he/she started. The world, obviously, can sense the character's intentions. The road to Paradisa is a one-way street, and going back out by any means that the characters have at their disposal is impossible. Using a darkness portal to attempt to get somewhere else within Paradisa (such as into the city, or from one room of the castle to another) will get the character to his/her destination. Usually. Sometimes the world interferes and sends the characters somewhere else, because it has a nasty sense of humor.
Pokemon
Edit
How many Pokemon may a trainer bring with them into Paradisa? Will they have their powers?
Trainers may bring their set of Pokemon (up to six) into Paradisa upon arrival. They can later obtain any additional Pokemon they own through events like Christmas. Their Pokemon will be allowed to keep their moves.
