PERSONALITYEdit

Gaara grew up being angry, blood-thirsty, and filled with hatred for humans of all sorts. His childhood was, of course, one of the main reasons behind this, but as he grew up, he became more… calm, if you will. Much more, even. When he was given the opportunity to love and protect his family and people, Gaara showed a more dedicated and protective side then he ever had before. He no longer seemed a monster, though the ignorant beings around him would sometimes still view him as one no matter how much he tried to prove otherwise. He will stand up and fight, never giving up should he consider the fight reasonable and worth his time. When there is no challenge to it and he is sure of the outcome from the beginning, he won’t bother putting any effort towards it, not wanting to waste any of his moments on someone he deems unworthy. Arrogant challengers, however, are one of the few things that will cause him to fight – usually just to prove a point. In a way, it can seem arrogant within itself, but who doesn’t have some contradictions to them?

He can seem stiff and unemotional when first being met, especially to strangers who know little to nothing about him. Gaara never means to seem cold or blunt, but is simply honest and not entirely prone to being able to express his emotions any differently. Becoming Kazekage gave Gaara a very professional air to his personality, something that melts away when he is in the company of those he cares about, but also something he finds hard to shake when he is not.

Love, affection, and considering things to be important and precious to him are still strange things to the young man, and he is left unsure on how to handle situations involving them – he’s gotten better and continues to try to understand, but he’s still what one could call slightly socially awkward.

ABILITIESEdit

As the host of Shukaku, Gaara possesses the ability to manipulate sand, typically moving it through the air to serve various purposes. The amount of sand he can control at one time is fairly immense, as in Part II he is able to gather enough sand to cover Sunagakure as a shield. If sand is lacking in abundance, Gaara can break down the earth minerals in the ground to create more sand. While he can control any dry sand, ordinary sand requires more chakra to manipulate it, tiring him at a rapid rate. As a result, Gaara keeps his own chakra-enhanced sand with him at all times in a calabash gourd also made out of sand on his back. Because this sand is already infused with his chakra, Gaara has a great deal more control over it, enabling stronger and faster attacks with it.

During battle, Gaara rarely moves, attacking with his sand from a single location and rarely using taijutsu. When first introduced his basic means of attacks is to first use Desert Coffin to capture, immobilize, and potentially suffocate an opponent with sand. Once the opponent is subdued, he uses Desert Funeral to cause the sand to crush the opponent with varying intensities. Though he comes up with other means of attack throughout the series, the "catch and crush" tactic remains at the center of his battle style, as he attempted to use it four times on Kimimaro and failing each in Part 1, despite having new jutsu.

As the second element of his stationary combat style, Gaara has a number of sand-based defenses to be used in case an opponent gets too close. His primary defense is his Shield of Sand, an automatic sand shield that surrounds and protects him from damage whether he wants it to or not. Gaara can control the shield to some degree, strengthening it to steel-like quality or calling upon it to completely encase himself. While an effective defense, the shield can be overcome with high speed attacks or simply be broken through with incredibly forceful strikes. Should this happen, Gaara has a layer of sand covering his body called the Armor of Sand. Although it's a useful secondary defense, the armor requires large amounts of chakra to remain active and also has the side-effect of weighing Gaara down.

In addition to these basic methods of offensive and defense, Gaara also has a number of miscellaneous attacks that, while capable of being an attack or a shield, are not limited to such purposes. By making a Sand Clone of himself, Gaara can have an ally to be used in battle or a mere distraction to be used to buy him time. Unlike most other clone-jutsu in the series, the Sand Clone can retain its shape after more than one attack, and can even reform itself or capture an opponent upon being dispersed. With Desert Suspension Gaara can use sand as a platform to allow himself and others to float in the air. His Third Eye also allows him to create a floating eyeball of sand in any location that he can see through as a means of spying or to guide his attacks while completely enclosed by his defenses.

SHUKAKUEdit

Shukaku is the One-Tailed Demon that Gaara is host to. His father sealed it inside of him upon his birth, sacrificing his mother's life to do so. He is intelligent, but also incoherent, giving it the demeanor of a drunkard. Shukaku itself can translate to "drunk" in Japanese. Like other Tailed Beasts, its innate rage and bloodlust influence its behavior, and it relishes in the opportunity to kill anyone in sight. Gaara knows how to control him - most of the time, anyway. He can not sleep or else Shukaku will take over his body - thus the dark circles around his eyes! IT'S NOT EYELINER.

With Shukaku's power, Gaara can control sand more than he might be able to without it, though it is never fully made clear. In desperate situations, Gaara can take on the form of Shukaku by layering sand on his body, making him many times more powerful than he already is. Shukaku's personality grows more dominant during this transformation, increasing Gaara's homicidal tendencies. Once finished, Gaara assumes a human-sized version of Shukaku wherein he relies on his brute strength to destroy everything around him. If need be, Gaara can almost instantly create a life-sized version of Shukaku should the human-sized form fail. In this form, he remains deep within the Shukaku copy, safe from harm though unable to move. Gaara can also unleash the spirit of Shukaku through his Feigning Sleep Technique, which forces him to sleep to allow Shukaku copy to operate at its full potential. To do so, however, Gaara must emerge from within the copy, leaving him open to attack for the duration of the jutsu. In time he begins gaining better control over Shukaku, such that he can suppress its personality by himself towards the end of the anime's filler arcs. By the time Part II begins, Gaara is even capable of using Shukaku's arms to attack numerous times without losing control of himself.

If he does happen to lose control at some point, you're all pretty fucked. Just sayin'.

• Uzumaki Naruto ; His first crush best friend. Naruto managed to see past the killer that Gaara was and helped him to realize that love and friendship were not things to be feared and hated. He made him realize that he was not a monster unless he chose to be and made it so he no longer wanted his village to fear him, but to respect him. Without Naruto, Gaara would not be where he was, and for that, Gaara is forever in his debt. He doesn't always understand him, or how he can be so loving and devoted to Sasuke certain people, but he knows it's just the way he is, and possibly respects him even more for it. He would do anything for him. And I mean anything.
• Kankuro ; His brother. While they have managed to become close back home, Gaara can't remember him in Paradisa.
• Temari ; His sister. Again, they are close at home, but he can not remember her here.
• Uchiha Sasuke ; :|
• Fourth Kazekage ; His father. He tried to train him to be a weapon for Suna, but when he realized that it wasn't possible to fully control him, he wanted to have him destroyed. He ordered assassins to kill him, though none of them ever managed because of Shukaku's protection. Hate.
• Yashamaru ; His uncle. He thought for the longest time that he was the only person who ever loved him and he made it sound as though his mother loved him dearly as well. He raised him and was kind to him. He was the only one to not show Gaara hate. He was very attached to him, so when he betrayed him, volunteered to kill him, and made him think no one loved him, Gaara completely snapped. It is because of him that he was the killing machine he became.

ParadisaEdit

• Allen Walker ; A close friend of Naruto's and thus a friend of Gaara's. They have talked a few times and Gaara enjoys his company. He was happy to help him when he switched demons with Naruto, not questioning him about what sort of demon he may host. He probably would be close to him if Gaara opened up more to people.
• Rinali Li ; A nice girl who told him where the library was. Her kindness to him is confusing at best, but he goes out of his way to talk to her. Despite knowing very little about her, he is already fond of her.
• Reno ; Gaara sort of views him as an older brother figure. He enjoys talking to him and learning from him and has gone to him for advice on a few occasions. Reno has taught Gaara many things, though he still has a long way to go to getting him to understand anything about social cues and the human race on a whole.
• Maya Fey ; A. . . strange friendship, that much is clear. Gaara finds her to be quite odd and in some ways very simple, but she is friendly and amusing. She reminds him a bit of Naruto and because of that, he considers her a friend.
• Asuka Langley Soryu ; Handcuffed to her for a day. He didn't care for her much and found her voice to be like nails on a chalkboard. Would gladly not talk to her again.
• Hatake Kakashi ; Nartuo's teacher. C-Creeper.
• Suu ; He met her briefly but she was very intriguing. She seems to know as little about the world as he does. He offered to draw her a picture of Suna :D
