Abilities
Edit
This was ridiculously out of date since his most recent canon update. I'll add this back in when I've got it all written out, but for reference, the short, non-overly descriptive list is as follows:
- Telekinesis
- Rapid cell regeneration
- Alchemy
- Clairsentience
- Sound manipulation
- Electric manipulation (absorbed from Elle Bishop in Para as well as in canon)
- Clarivoyance (absorbed from Molly Walker in Para)
- Lie detection
- Imprinting
- Shape shifting
- Disintegration
- Flight
- Empathy
- Telepathy (absorbed from Peter Petrelli in Para)
Personality
Edit
Personality-wise, Sylar's a bit hard to pin down - mostly because he's nothing if not mercurial. One minute, he'll present himself as just your average, every day guy, if overly polite and a little shy. The next, he'll be in your face, telling you in low, near seductive tones exactly how he's going to kill you. Either way, however, there are a few constants when it comes to Sylar.
He's obsessed with power, particularly when it comes to gaining new super powers from his canonmates. He's murdered more than one, in his quest to better himself, claiming that the person originally in possession of the power was unworthy of it. That they were broken and that he could fix them by killing them, and taking their power. He's also convinced that he, himself, is just as broken as the rest of the powered, and that killing them will put him a step closer to being fixed. In clinical psychology, and just for the record, this is known as covetous psychopathy.
He'll lie when it suits him, too, having done it to Mohinder Suresh in his need for power, but he's not a pathological liar. If you know what he is, he'll stop trying to restrain himself on your behalf. He also won't kill normal people, if they're not in his way and he can avoid it, as there's really nothing for him to gain. And the two normal people he has killed - his mother and Chandra Suresh - are the only two murders he feels any fraction of guilt for, even if, if murder were a justifiable thing, he had a reason to kill them. Mostly because they betrayed him on a deep level, and Sylar has severe betrayal issues. Which probably explains why he's convinced everyone is going to betray him at some point, and as such doesn't make friends that easily, even beyond being a killer.
Amusingly, however? The man needs attention like most people need air. Fear. Love. Hate. Respect. Whatever. It doesn't matter as long as his presence evokes some kind response. And well, trying to avoid forging friendly relations with other people takes at least two of those things off the list, doesn't it?
Even if he's hesitant to make friends, though, there are a couple of things that might change his mind. The first, that if you do for him, he'll do anything in his power to do for you (and conversely, if you hurt him, he'll return the favor), which, generally, leads to friendship. Or, if you promise him something and keep your word when he's not expecting you to, he'll love you forever. Mostly because while he doesn't give his word often, he always keeps it, and since it's such a great gesture for him, he assumes it's the same for others, and makes him more likely to trust them.
The only person who actually manages to escape the above generalization is Mohinder Suresh. They've both betrayed each other time and time again, and yet he always goes running back. Even he doesn't know why, beyond the fact that he recognizes that there's a connection between the two of them that even he can't understand.

Paradisa
Edit
- Angela Petrelli → Sylar's under the impression that she's his mother, thanks to Peter, and Angela hasn't bothered to correct this opinion. Nor as he asked about it, because on some level, he doesn't really want to know. He likes the idea of having a family, and he and Angela get along well enough. He'd hate to have to kill her.
- Barney Stinson → He's only talked to him a few times, but he doesn't seem like a terribly bad guy. Then again, though, he's not aware of the whole Psycho Killer thing.
- Azula → Azula's been more than kind to Sylar, offering her aid should he go and do something villainous and get caught. Unfortunately, however, since Washington implicated Azula for York's murder, his opinion has since changed. If he manages to catch her alone, he'll murder her. Brutally.
- Billy (Dr. Horrible) →
- Delirium → Sylar hates Delirium -- so much so that, if he thought he could get away with it, she'd be dead by his hand. Mostly because she screwed with Mohinder, while he and Sylar were dating, and he doesn't deal well with having his toys broken. Even though Mohinder's gone now, he hasn't quite gotten over that, however, and the feeling seems to still be mutual.
- Elle Bishop → Sylar and Elle have issues going way back, and as such, when he first came to Paradisa, Sylar held her at something of an arm's length. He was polite enough, since by then he'd already gave his word to Peter that he wouldn't hurt anyone -- her included -- but other than that? He didn't want much to do with her. At some point in January 2009, however, Elle got a trip home and came back with memories of Sylar murdering her father and causing her ability to overload. Sylar tried to avoid her, since Adam had warned him that she would most likely be out for his blood, but well, that didn't exactly work. She attacked him, before begging him to kill her to end her suffering, and he refused before eventually forgiving her for both the attack and what had happened between them before. In the process, he somehow absorbed her ability and stopped her from overloading, and ever since then, their relationship has been a bit awkward -- or at least it is on his part, mostly because he doesn't know how to act around her, now. Things got even worse when Elle actually left the Castle and came back a few days later, from her own murder at his hands on the beach, with no memory of ever having been there. They got to talking again, albeit awkwardly, and slowly became friends. Unfortunately, however, after a loss where they thought they were husband and wife, things have gotten weird between them again.
- Fifth Doctor →
- Molly Walker → When Molly first arrived, Sylar was nothing short of annoyed -- mostly because Mohinder forced the two of them to live together, and he was half sure that the little girl was going to ruin what he had going with Mohinder. She didn't, however, and the two of them slowly started bonding. Now it's a case of anyone touches Molly and they die, he's become that emotionally attached to her.
- Peri Brown →
- Peter Petrelli → Upon his arrival in Paradisa, Sylar was marked by the Peace Patrol for threatening some of the residents of the castle in his first few hours. Peter was the one that called them off, as long as Sylar promised that he wouldn't harm anyone while during his stay here, to which Sylar agreed and a hesitant truce was formed. Over the course of a few months, the two of them got to talking properly, swapped bodies for a bit, and eventually decided that the other wasn't as bad as they initially thought. Which was probably for the best, because when Peter went home for a bit and came back with new memories, he revealed that Sylar is actually his brother. Which Sylar bought hook, line, and sinker because Peter had no reason to lie. The two of them have gotten sort of close, and as much as he hates to admit it, he'd probably trust Peter with his life if he had to.
- Ruby → Sylar's current BFF. She talked him out of trying to kill himself after Mohinder left, and he trusted her enough to let her possess him briefly at one point. Yeah, their relationship is a little weird, but she's a demon and he's not quite sane, so did you really expect anything less?
- Sam Winchester → Has talked to him all of twice, maybe. He's Ruby's boyfriend and quite possibly not all that bad beyond that. Either way, though, he'll tolerate him if he has to.
- Wally West→ Utter douchebag. He'll kill him one of these days, if Wally pisses him off enough.
- Washington → Could be his twin, when he's out of his armor. They sort of grudgingly respect each other, and Wash told Sylar he could kill Bennet if and when he showed up, as long as he let him know, first. That earns Wash some serious points.
- York & Delta →
Gone From Paradisa
Edit
- Adam Monroe → Sylar never really decided how he felt about Adam before he left. They got along well enough the few times they talked and Adam had the courtesy to warn him that Elle was out for his blood after her trip home, but on the other hand, he was the man behind the Shanti Virus. They probably could have been great friends, eventually, which would have been bad for the Castle.
- Ares → The two of them could have had a beautiful partnership of evil, and then Ares went home. That kind sucks, but really, Sylar isn't too broken up over it.
- Dream → Delirium's brother. He hated the guy and he's amazingly glad he's gone.
- Matt Parkman → He went home. No sweat off his back, really.
- Mohinder Suresh → Mortal enemies with a mutual, undefinable attraction, they ended up sleeping together not too long after they both showed up at the Castle. Casual sex turned to love, and while under the influence of the Castle, Sylar ended up proposing to Mohinder. When it was over and he had his free will back, however, they decided to go through with it anyway. Unfortunately, however, Mohinder went home just weeks before they were due to get married. He's still sort of crushed.
- Nathan Petrelli → Sylar's older brother -- or so he was convinced. He never really talked to him though, and as such he's sort of ambivalent about him being gone.
- Ninth Doctor → Sylar's BFF at the Castle. Nine gave him a key to the TARDIS and made him an official companion in spite of the fact that Nine knew who Sylar was and what he was capable of. He was upset when Nine left, but he's gotten over it since then. Mostly.
