Background
Edit
"Perhaps I only sound that way because I have existed since time immemorial!"
Grimoire Weiss, or rather, Weiss, was a human soldier in the Hamelin Organization, a military organization with the purpose of seeking out children with high physical ability and effectively turning them into war machines to battle the Legions (humans who went berserk due to White Chlorination Syndrome). He was nineteen when he was captured by them for "Project Black Book", which was part of the Gestalt Project. He woke up with a book next to him, along with the thirteen other teenagers in a room. One of them was a girl he had met three years ago during the 13th crusade, a large-scale Legion annihilation operation in which he saved her life before splitting up due to being surrounded by Legions. It was after speaking with her that Weiss noticed a young man and a girl arguing. The argument turned into something worse.
A gigantic black hand emerged from the suddenly opened book that was at the girl's feet, grabbed the young man, and crushed him to death. Afterward, the young man's body was sucked into the book, never to be seen again. Following this, the group of teenagers discovered that the books they were given were "grimoires", and that they were also to kill each other using them. Only two were to survive. While chaos erupted and people were being absorbed by the grimoires, the girl Weiss had spoken to earlier planned to survive along with him, and also hoped to get away with not killing him either.
However, at that very moment, she knocked him down, pushing him out of the way of a giant black lance which killed her. She became a red book, later known as Grimoire Rubrum. It was then that Weiss realized he was the only other survivor in the room aside from the young man who had just killed her. Suddenly, the other young man turned into a book as well, a black book which would later be known as Grimoire Noir. Just as suddenly, Weiss's own body was sucked into a book, becoming Grimoire Weiss.
His reaction to all of this? To think about which color book he would be, and to keep on laughing until he disappeared.
1312 years later, he is discovered in the Lost Shrine, guarded by two Shades named Hansel and Gretel. It is here that he encounters, or rather, is woken up by Nier. Due to Nier's rather violent method of waking him up, Weiss lost most of his memories, if not nearly all of them. Shortly, they do battle with Hansel and Gretel in order to save Nier's daughter, Yonah. After saving her, he returns along with Nier to the village where he lives. With information from Popola, the village's matriarch, the two set off to collect the Sealed Verses that Nier hopes will allow Weiss to cure his daughter of the Black Scrawl.
And thus, the events of Nier: Gestalt begin...
Personality
Edit
"You stand in the presence of ancient wisdom!
I am of text of the darkest, most arcane type, and I could be of great assistance to you.”
If one were to take a glance at him, they would think Weiss seems to be rather haughty and pompous for a talking book. And they would be perfectly right. Weiss (Grimoire Weiss, as he insists upon) has quite the inflated ego. He deems most sidequests that Nier takes on as simply wastes of time, and constantly argues with Kainé, another member of their party, probably due to her clothing choice as well as rough personality. He is offended at being compared to a "common paperback", and mocks their enemies, the Shades, calling them foolish creatures or boasting that they aren't worthy of their steel. Grimoire Weiss is an omnipotent magical being, after all, and he believes he should be treated as such.
The material collection states that Weiss wields two weapons. One is magic. The other...is his spiteful tongue. Whether it is more effective than magic is debatable, but he certainly does have one. Even his companions aren't safe from ridicule, as he comments that Nier fights like a one-legged chicken should he fail to fight Hansel and Gretel properly, and calls Kainé a hussy at every turn. A textbook example of a grumpy old man, Weiss is cynical and pessimistic, a trait that seems to have stemmed from his days as a human. He calls Nier a fool for saying Jakob and Gideon's mother could still be alive after a week in the Junk Heap, and scoffs at the idea of miracles. Often in dungeons, he notes that the situation bodes ill. Weiss has almost no problem bluntly bringing up the harsh truth, something that may make him seem emotionally detached.
In and out of battle, Weiss is the advisor of the group. He'll give Nier hints about enemy weaknesses, or tell him where to go for a sidequest. From identifying substances or items to determining which parts of a vehicle need to be replaced, he makes for a rather handy reference manual. However, he isn't as knowledgeable as he holds himself to be. Things such as electricity or trains are a relic of the past, which means all the knowledge he has about them is, ironically, most likely from reading other books. Human customs such as dating (which he classifies as mating rituals) and emotions are a mystery to him, something he notes from time to time. Amusingly, giant Shades don't scare him, but haunted manors and the like do.
Even though Weiss is somewhat emotionally detached, it definitely doesn't mean that he doesn't have a (figurative) heart. Deplorable acts such as demanding children to steal or cheating on a lover are most certainly not tolerated by him, and he softens up when the matter concerns children. When the situation is about people he actually cares about, he becomes much more friendly, whether if he's reassuring a friend that they did the right thing, or complimenting a bride-to-be. Although he won't readily admit it, Weiss cares deeply for his friends, and has a great amount of faith in them. It's this devotion to them that prompts him to sacrifice his own existence for Nier and Yonah's sake. Death does not seem to particularly faze him, even then.
I guess you could say...
...you can't judge a book by its cover.
Abilities
Edit
"Blood is sound...sounds are words...and words are power!"
As stated in Grimoire Nier, the Sealed Verses are "offensive magic in expectation of Legion battles. Grimoire Weiss is necessary for Grimoire Noir’s activation, and the Sealed Verses in turn are vital for Grimoire Weiss’s activation. In other words, it’s a double lock intended to prevent any accidental activation of the system, so that they’ll only be activated by the manager when the time has truly come."
Added by ChlorseraphIn game, the Sealed Verses are basically powerful dark magic spells that the player can use to kill Shades. Magic regenerates at a slow rate, but Weiss can absorb the blood of Shades to regain magic more quickly. If he absorbs enough blood, that allows the player to use a Finisher to, well, finish off a boss. Seeing as there are hopefully no Shades in Paradisa, the second option is nulled.
The Sealed Verses he possesses are:
► Dark Blast: fire tiny bursts of dark energy. Pew-pew-pew blasts of dark magic that work really well as bullets in a top-down shooter. See here.
► Dark Lance: launch a devastating magical spear. See above and also here.
► Dark Hand: pummel foes with a powerful magical arm. One of the most useful spells ingame. See here.
► Dark Phantasm: dispatch a magical doppelganger to attack nearby enemies. See here.
► Dark Whirlwind: attack with magical rotating blades. See here.
► Dark Gluttony: absorb enemy magic attacks. This does not get much use ingame but might in Paradisa.
► Dark Wall: erect a magical defensive barrier. See here.
► Dark Execution: summon magical spikes from the ground to impale enemies. See here.
Relationships
Edit
“Besides, I have my companions. Of course, they’re weak, and they whine when I leave. It’s almost too much trouble... But they are my friends! I shall fight by their side. Now...and forever!”
Canon
Edit
Emil: If he had to regard anyone as his "son", Emil would be it. The boy's been shat on by life enough while at home, no need to make things worse here. And considering that Weiss thinks he's dead at home, perhaps this place is the only comfort he can offer. This doesn't mean he won't lecture him though.
Kainé: Foul-mouthed. Lingerie-clad. Hussy. The two of them fight more often than not, with Weiss making fun of her clothing and language, and her threatening to chop off his non-existent genitals or to throw him onto a campfire. But she's a friend too and he'd be lying if he said he didn't consider her part of their little "family". Gone.

Trivia
Edit
- can apparently smell, given that he could tell Gideon and Jakob's mother's perfume smelled of roses.
- can go to sleep. And drown, apparently.
- if hit physically/with a weapon, he takes damage in a way similar to Grimoire Rubrum and Grimoire Noir.
- Dark Lance and Dark Hand are probably the most used spells.
- Can remember some of the "old world" aka modern day Earth, but can't remember being in the Hamelin Organization and whatnot. He does remember Project Gestalt though. :|
- Tropes: Snarky Non-Human Sidekick, Large Ham, Spell Book, Insistent Terminology, Jerk With A Heart Of Gold, Unusually Uninteresting Sight
