PersonalityEdit

Guts is, first and foremost, an incredibly resilient man. Despite the hardships he's been meant to suffer from his cursed birth, he has grown and changed considerably, gaining in both strength of body and mind. The brash stubbornness of his youth has melted into a somewhat "worldly" view on things and the people around him; he's come to realize over time what matters most to him and what he is willing to sacrifice to protect it - everything. He gives of himself relentlessly for the sake of those precious few who've managed to fight their ways into his heart despite the long voyage it took to get there; Guts is both incredibly loyal and incredibly selfless, though this was not always the case. It took unfathomable loss for him to finally understand what his priorities truly were.

He holds himself at an arm's length to most, preferring to keep his distance in order to protect those around him; cursed with the Brand of Sacrifice, Guts is a veritable 'demon beacon;' the mark on the base of his neck is like a magnet drawing in all the wretched creatures of the shadows and darkness. Anyone around him is guaranteed to become entrapped in the endless battles Guts is forced to partake in as he's constantly under attack. However, it isn't only by fault of the Brand that Guts keeps from forming many personal relationships; he still feels a deep, strong sense of loss and longing after the betrayal of the man he viewed as his best friend, Griffith, and the transformation of the woman he loves, Casca. Dealing with both of these issues on a daily basis has left him emotionally damaged, likely beyond repair, but given him insight into himself and others he wouldn't have possessed otherwise.

Beneath the outer layers of his personality - the regret, the longing, the emotional distance - is an insatiable anger and blood lust that cannot hope to be tamed nor satisfied. With the usage of the Berserker armor, he's constantly doing battle with himself in order to keep these emotions in check, lest he let his rage win out and he becomes a mindless beast unable to determine friend from foe. The nature of these feelings are clear - his hatred and pain caused by Griffith's betrayal, his actions, the loss of the Band of the Hawk, everything that happened to Casca, being made to watch her rape and subsequent loss of mental capacities, his disgust and loathing for the God Hand, etc. Needless to say, his hatred for demons, and anything resembling them, is considerable.

Guts refuses to acknowledge the concept that humans' fates are pre-determined or previously ordained; he fights against his own as being Branded for the Sacrifice, and is determined to see the end to God Hand, and Griffith in particular. However, in the face of seeing Casca well again, even revenge had taken a back-seat to attempting to bring her back and find some way to protect those he loves against the onslaught of Apostles and demons that they attract.

Abilities / CombatEdit

Guts in the armor with Schierke
Mako ReAdded by Mako Re

Guts possesses a raw, brutal strength in battle. He's been a fighter since birth; found under the hanging corpse of his mother, he was rescued by a band of mercenaries, the head of which gave him a sword and taught him how to fight (without the kid gloves). Since he was always training with a full-sized weapon, Guts' propensity towards over-sized swords seems natural.

One of his most valuable traits is his undeniable survivor's spirit. No matter how desolated his body can become - and it can take quite a bit of damage; one might mistake him for a tank, at times - he will get up and keep fighting against all odds. This, combined with the invaluable resource of innumerable years of battle experience make him an incredibly formidable opponent, particularly with his sword. He is able to cleave through practically anything, most notably other's weapons and blades. This 'punching bag' sort of mentality is only heightened by Guts' most powerful double-edged blade in battle: the Berserker armor. It taps into the darkest part of its wearer, sending them into a mindless rage in which they feel no pain. With their body's potential untapped, they will literally fight themselves to their deaths. The armor will fuse into broken bones to keep its master in battle, and permit him or her to bleed to death unless they're pulled to their senses by an outside force. The first time Guts used this armor, a patch of his black hair was shocked white from the trauma.

Alongside these strengths, Guts has a good eye for throwing knives and aiming with the crossbow attached to his artificial left arm (which is severed just below the elbow). The arm is also equipped with a sort of mini-cannon (the fingers detach and the cannon is fired from the open wrist). He carries a multitude of flash bombs and a few minor explosives to aid him, as well.

Canon Relationships Edit

  • Griffith → Once his best friend, the man he'd kill for, the man he'd give his life for - now, his greatest enemy. Guts joined the Band of the Hawks in his early teenage years after catching the other's eye; from there, they were nigh inseparable. Guts quickly rose in the ranks in the Hawks' army to Captain Commander of the Raiders. He was Griffith's ace in the hole, and his right hand. Their friendship is endlessly complex; Guts believed that Griffith would never be able to view him as an equal as long as he remained with the Hawks as he was, so he left - and in doing so, utterly shattered Griffith in the process. Griffith, who believed Guts truly belonged to him and would never leave his side slipped and made a series of mistakes that landed him in a less than favorable position - imprisoned in the dungeons beneath Midland, accused a traitor, and marking the Hawks for death. Not long after, the Eclipse was triggered and Griffith chose to sacrfice the entirety of his army - including Guts - to gain Godhood, raping Casca in front of him before they were rescued by the Skull Knight. Their comraderie is utterly decimated. What is difficult about Griffith in Paradisa is that he has no recollection of the Eclipse nor anything after it - he isn't the Griffith who threw him and the Hawks away, and thus killing him is veritably... meaningless. Guts knows he'll garner no satisfaction in destroying a man who doesn't understand what he's being punished for. He wants Griffith to suffer for what he did... and this Griffith? Just isn't the one he'd like to torture... but it doesn't mean he'll trust him again, even if part of him really wishes he could.
  • Puck →
  • Casca → Casca is, unarguably, Guts' most important person. Though she lost her mind after the events of the Eclipse, Guts still loves her unconditionally and refuses to give up on her. In his world, he's been traveling to Elfhelm in order to attempt to "cure" her mind, though he was warned that what he wishes for may not be what she wishes for. He's intensely protective of her and will stop at no lengths to do whatever it takes to keep her safe. Because of events in their world, she currently dislikes him, going as far as to bite / scratch him if he tries to touch her.
  • Farnese → A familiar face from Guts' world. Guts has been traveling with her for some time, and trusts her.
  • Schierke → A witch that was entrusted in Guts' care by her Master. Their relationship started off shaky; Schierke was sheltered and had never met anyone as... blunt and brash as Guts generally is, but she eventually warmed up to him when she realized he's more than a gruff douchebag. He's incredibly fond of her; she's part of his little 'family' and he'd do anything to protect her. He looks on her as something of a daughter. Extremely protective of this one. 8| Do not mess with his little witch.
  • Judeau → An old friend from Guts' world who had died during the events of the Eclipse. Judeau has always known Guts incredibly well and been a solid source of advice and insight. Seeing him again is bittersweet since he knows what is waiting for Judeau when the castle sends him back home.
  • Serpico → A traveling companion and friend from his world, Serpico is Farnese's attendant. Their relationship has been an interesting one; Serpico has made it clear his interests are and always will be Farnese's protection, even if that means making Guts his enemy. Even so, he's an invaluable asset to the group and a reliable hand in their endless battles towards Elfhelm. (Gone)

Paradisa RelationshipsEdit

  • Allen Walker → A good kid with a good head on his shoulders whose company Guts enjoys. Despite the fact he gets the feeling Allen's been through a lot and has had more than his fair share of shit to deal with, he seems sort of innocent and child-like in a way. Son. Some of the things Allen said while Guts was on his kid loss really hit home. Fondness, man. Fondness.
  • Apollo Justice → A friend of Ino's. Guts thinks he's a total pussy. Is officially on his "would probably shank in the face" list after he went on a truth-telling loss and told Guts that he was responsible for Griffith's downfall. ...Yeah. No love lost here.
  • Bakura → Asshole. Stole his armor, once, after Guts buried it to keep it from being used. He then sealed part of his soul using his Millennium Ring into Guts' armor, and now he often appears as a spectre-like spirit that only Guts can see to troll him. He really, really hates this douchebag's guts. No pun intended.
  • Arthur →
  • Chie →
  • Clark Kent → Got his ass kicked by this guy during the ambush on Cabot. Guts thinks there's more to him than meets the eye and doesn't particularly trust him.
  • Crowley → BFF. ...If by BFF, one means 'guy I'm going to rip apart slowly, and watch bleed to death.' They... don't exactly get along.
  • DamianMini-me?! The kid was following him around in town once, apparently piqued by his armor and sword. They met once more during the Home Sweet Home plot, when the castle was being destroyed. Damian got hit by some falling debris, and Guts had to carry his ass back to town. Something about him reminds him a lot of Isidro and a little of himself, so he can't entirely hate him no matter how obnoxious his attitude.
  • Dante → Being one of the two Sparda twins, Guts can tell that he's got a powerful demonic presence going on inside him. Even so, he's approachable and not a total dick like his brother. Guts figures he could get to like him.
  • Erica → Reminds him of the 'Erica' at home, if only in appearances. She's cute, and familiar with him despite the fact he isn't a great conversationalist. She sort of grows on him.
  • Ino → Since she remembers him from his previous visits to Paradisa (that he doesn't remember), she was the first person to approach him and explain the situation. She also has intimate details of his history that few even in his own world know; he trusts her and is protective over her like she were family.
  • Joshua → An "Apostle" who encountered Guts when he went on his Berserker loss and led him into the castle. He stole the Dragonslayer. He also more recently froze Ino into stone using his time-stopping ability; this kid is on his serious shitlist.
  • Junior → "Old man." Guts likes to rip on him about the fact he looks 12 despite the fact he's 28. They're friendly with each other and have fought together a few times. Jr. stayed at his house for a while around Christmas to escape the castle bell antics and they recently took a trip into the Dead Zone together.
  • Howl → An eccentric guy, but one that he's indebted to. Howl put a spell on the Brand of Sacrifice but prevents it from bleeding in the presence of demons.
  • Kratos → An interesting man. Guts knows he is an 'angel,' if the word carries a different meaning in their separate worlds. They got to talking a few times, and their discussions are usually meaningful. Guts sees him as trustworthy and a softie beneath the cool exterior.
  • Kyle - Fanboy? Kyle's a pretty weird kid, but he's alright. Seems like he's got a good set of morals and ethics on top of amazing powers, which is probably a good thing. He took good care of Guts when he was a kid, which... is really weird to him. Some of the things he said were unexpected and Guts isn't sure how he feels about that, but it's only solidified his opinion that Kyle is a good guy.
  • Mai → Really strange; really inquisitive. She tends to ask the most blunt questions ever and totally expects an honest answer. He got a memory of hers during the Memory Loss plot and promised to keep it secret. She also has his retarded hat.
  • Raidou Kuzunoha → While they were originally tentative enemies, Guts' came to respect him after getting some time to get used to his "demon" issues in Paradisa. Raidou went on a loss, during which he sent Grimmjow to kill him; he was nearly successful and caught several of his friends in the crossfire. Since then, Guts is extremely disappointed in him for the way he handled it afterwards (neglecting to warn him after he'd come off his loss, and throwing himself a pity party). He's hoping Raidou will wisen up and regain his respect in the future.
  • Rangiku - Has an -amazing- rack. Other than that, she has a witty and laid-back sense of humor which is pretty interesting. She likes to drink and doesn't hold drunk groping against you, which is pretty hard not to like.
  • Reno → Met during the Cabot murders. He seems to be a decent guy with a good sense of humor, which is good, because Guts likes to rag on him about his 'gay fairy dust' (cure magic).
  • Shayera → Sort of bicker whenever they talk. She's a superhero; he's not. He respects her as an ally, even if they don't get along.
  • Sylvana →
  • Teresa → A powerful demon/human hybrid. She confuses Guts with her interest in him and their strange conversations. He isn't really sure what to make of her. They've gotten pretty close. Bromance.
  • Travis Touchdown → Retarded, but also amusing in some weird ass way.
  • Vergil → Because of his past connection to Ino, Guts and Vergil have gotten into a few scuffles. Their relationship is strange - and while they're at odds with each other, neither of them are without their honor, which makes for some interesting situations...
  • Yoruichi → Known to Guts as a male cat that tends to follow him around and be a smartass. He doesn't realize 'he' is actually a very attractive 'she.' Yoruichi continues to uphold the charade despite the fact they've known each other for several months... and Yoruichi is living under his roof.
  • Zelman → Had Guts' armor after it was stolen by Joshua. This fucker lit Guts on fire. They're not exactly bff's.

LossesEdit

→ For his permanent loss, Guts has lost his memories of both his father figure and mother figures from childhood - Gambino and Shizu. It was, formerly, his memories of Casca.

→ A recurring temporary loss has been the arrival of his son, the "moonlight boy," who follows him at night and disappeared during the day, only during the full moon.Though it's speculation, Guts is almost positive this boy is his and Casca's son, the child tainted during the Eclipse.

→ The castle caused temporary loss of control over his armor, causing him to go Berserk outside of the castle and attack several people before being subdued by Allen Walker. When he woke up the following day, his permanent loss had changed.

→ Regressed to age 6.

Changes in ParadisaEdit

Since his arrival, there have been several events that have gradually changed Guts' perspective on things.

Because of Paradisa and the multitude of demons wandering the castle and its surrounding areas at any given time, he's been forced to accept that not all demons are inherently evil by nature. Though still distrusting, he won't attempt to kill someone who triggers the Brand on sight unless otherwise provoked.

Casca went through a week-long loss of her "coping mechanism" - she was forced back to "sanity." During this time, she and Guts discussed whether or not she'd want to be brought "back" to herself when the loss was over, or whether she'd prefer to be left a shell of herself without any memory of what happened. She picked remaining as she was. This was devastating news for him; since then, he's been trying to cope and figure out a way to bring her back without having her traumatized by those bad memories.
