The moon is so beautiful. It's a big silver dollar, flipped by God. And it landed scarred side up, see? So He made the world mad.

AboutEdit

It sucks to be Harvey Dent. But you know that. Saying Harvey Dent’s life sucks is like the sky is blue or the grass is green. It all starts young, a boy and his father and a two-headed coin. The mother’s gone. The brother’s voice still echoes past the crackling of a fire. It’s just the two of them and a game they play. Heads, the father will whip the boy for his crimes. Tails, he’ll let him go.

Flash forward a few years and the little beaten boy is Gotham’s district attorney. He’s successful, he’s strong, nothing can take him down except the temper burning hot and getting hotter in his chest. But no one knows about that. He keeps that secret as tight to his chest as his father’s lucky coin carried in his breast pocket to the trial that changes his life.

Two Face is born August 2 when Sal ‘The Boss’ Maroni throws acid into Harvey Dent’s face. He wakes a roiling angry demon out for blood, and in that way nothing about him has changed over the years. But time has tamed the beast as it were. He is less the barely controlled thing he was those first few weeks – out to make a name for himself even if, especially if, it destroyed Harvey’s – and much more a calculated businessman in a suit. He can still be cruel. He knows when and where and how to strike. He can hurt in ways that put even the Joker to shame. But now he knows how to last, how to use his resources, how to control by charisma if not kindness.

He is in every way the Dionysus to Harvey’s Apollo, and so where Harvey found solace in illusions and complicated masks, half-truths, Two Face takes no greater pleasure then in tearing off the covers, revealing things in all their two-faced glory. He is unique for a villain in that he never lies – or at the very least, he believes everything he says to be true – and any liars in his ranks soon find themselves staring down the barrel of a gun. He does not abide falseness, nor masks that hide – as opposed to masks that reveal – and more then a few have paid the price of trying to be something they are not in his presence.

Two Face knows that he doesn’t need to do anything to anyone to break them except hold up a mirror and show them what they really are. The world is already corrupt beyond saving, people are just too ignorant to see it. He’s out for himself, and himself alone. After all, it’s not like anyone else will look after him in his stead.

And in this great mess of a man, where does Harvey fit in? To be sure, he’s not gone. He’s sill there, keeping Two Face in check, hovering in a few good deeds, a kind glance towards the less fortunate. He is by no means, the strong, unstoppable man he was all those years ago though. Time and guilt and doubt and self-loathing have wrecked it all, broken him down and made him little more then a victim in his own mind. And like many long-term victims, he has his moments of sudden, desperate defiance, attempts to push the dark away once and for all. But Two Face isn’t some kidnapper who can be physically shoved aside and escaped, and for all Harvey’s defiance, he is inevitably pulled back into place as the tiny voice of conscience to Two Face’s brutality and chaos.

They serve as counterpoints and balances, each holding the other back from all he could be, and for that they hate each other. However, it’s been so long that they can’t help but work together by now. They bicker constantly, yes, but when they have a shared goal, they are a force to be reckoned with. Two heads are better then one, right? As long as the balance is kept, they function quite well in the criminal underbelly of Gotham. Really though, balance is not a very good word for it. They aren’t equal. They don’t spend the same amount of time in control. Two Face takes great pleasure in beating Harvey down, in reminding him of his failures and shortcomings, and that, more then anything else, is the reason Harvey is the victim he has become. Two Face knows as long as he keeps Harvey on a short leash, fosters something like Stockholm’s Syndrome in his better half, those instances when Harvey surfaces long enough to defy the will of the coin will stay as infrequent and uncommon as they are now.

The rest of the time, the coin reigns supreme over the both of them. The unbiased third party to Harvey and Two Face’s constant argument, their father’s double-headed coin, now scarred on one side, is the perfect scapegoat. Harvey can’t make decisions for fear of having to deal with the consequences. Two Face can only be as wicked as Harvey allows him to be. And so the coin comes in to play when the two come to a draw, when they’re deadlocked so tight there’s no way to decide. More then that though, the coin is something of a security blanket. They flip the coin compulsively not because they are always coming down to that draw, but because it’s something familiar, something steady. There is quite a bit to be said about two men who spend most of their lives in the confines of a single city, even after they are coerced into leaving. They are desperately reliant on constants – always the same city, always an even number, always the Batman – and the coin is the ultimate constant. As long as they hold it in their hands, they control their own destiny, they are puppets to no one’s will except their own and that of their chosen agent of fate.

AbilitiesEdit

  • Hand to hand combat as taught to him by Batman… :|b
  • Sharpshooting a la Deathstroke the Terminator
  • Proficient in the use of most handguns
  • Nearly inhuman levels of tolerance for both pain and chemical substances
  • Weirdly… charismatic? For instance, he’s not allowed into the general population of a prison because he could get them all to riot within like… a day… Yeah

RelationshipsEdit

CanonEdit

Batman BRO HE HATES YOU SO MUCH. No, actually Harvey is a little conflicted on the subject since they used to work together, and then he entrusted him with Gotham for a little while... but then came back and immediately blamed him for murder. And made Two-Face come back after he'd been gone for a year and change... So yeah, thanks for that weird complex dude. 'Preciate it.

Batwoman Debuted as a hero the same year he was entrusted with Gotham. PRESUMABLY THEY MET A COUPLE TIMES EVEN IF WRITERS HAVE DENIED US THAT THUS FAR

Bruce Wayne Kind of bros? Apparently he paid for Harvey's college education, so that's pretty cool...

Carol Bermingham SOME WOMAN WHO I GUESS HE LOVED BUT SHE WAS BASICALLY JUST INVENTED AS A MOVIE TIE-IN. HE THINKS SHE'S DEAD BUT SHE'S NOT, SHE'S JUST IN HIDING

Christopher Dent Dad. Abusive fuck head.

Gilda Dent Waifu. Left him. Got remarried. Had his kids anyway?!?!? Probably the one person who could save Harvey from himself...

James Gordon Jimbo <3 They're old pals, and by old pals, I mean Jim has completely abandoned the idea of ever getting Harvey back and Two-Face likes tormenting him with that

Murray Dent Elder brother, burned to death when Harvey was seven. He was kind of a psychopathic jerk. Yep…

Renee Montoya They're in love with her, but they suck at it and ended up ruining her life right before kidnapping her and trying to keep her underground forever... :|b Also she's a lesbian, so it wouldn't have worked even if that wasn't completely creepy

Robin HAHA WHICH ONE. In general, Two Face hates Robin. He sees him as sort of a replacement for Harvey, and an obnoxious childish one at that. At the same time though, Robin is a really good way to get to Batman, so… he at least has his uses.

  • Dick Grayson His favorite Robin, even after he grew up. He’s fun to toy with, they’ve had a few fun traumatic moments, and Dick has such wonderful amounts of hate for him in return. Never change Real Robin <3
  • Jason Todd Never… knew this kid existed… As far as he knows there was Robin for a little while, then rumors the Joker had killed him and then he was back… Sorry Jason )8
  • Tim Drake Less fun then the other one, so Two-Face is rather... ‘eh’ about him. Sure he still hates him because he’s Robin, but it’s just not the same. Bawww, nostalgia :<

The Joker The only member of the Bat Rogues that he legitimately hates… though that actually stems from Harvey instead of Two-Face. He’ll work with him if he has to, but really… just go away Joker, you’re the worst thing.

OtherEdit

  • For true randomness, Rama actually does flip a coin for most of his decisions… 8>
  • Harvey talks in plaintext. Two Face talks in dark green, bold italics. Because he’s an attention whore like that. Yes, they do sound different though how obvious the difference is varies depending on what they're talking about
  • Used to be blind in his left eye, but Yuki got him ~nanomachines~ for Christmas so he can see. As these are permanent, he will lose his sight should he ever enter the Dead Zone, or if the castle goes to some non-sci-fi world
  • There is always a large, gilded mirror wherever he is living, no matter where that is… It’s usually prominently featured. Because Eris is a dick.
  • Census report!
