Personality
Edit
Howl is a mess of contradictions and a confusing fop, probably even to himself sometimes. He seems to enjoy taking on different personas and concocting backgrounds and reputations for each one; he is dramatic and loves luxury, he is lazy and clever, he is a coward who can only twist himself around to bravery when he convinces himself he is not going to do something dangerous, then wrangles the situation around so he has to go and do it anyway. He is not a stoic hero. He does not jump at the call. He will whine and complain up until the pivotal moment. He’s in his late twenties, but he will throw tantrums (involving copious amounts of green slime in the bargain) over a hair-dye job that does not go as planned.
Our view of Howl throughout the book is confused by the lens of Sophie, of course; and even Sophie admits that he has many sides – Howl is the kind of man who’ll throw money away for suits, break hearts with abandon, undercharge poor people for his spells, and give up his heart to keep a shooting star alive because he feels sorry for it.
Howl is good with children. He enjoys their company and has a good relationship with his young niece and nephew. He is lazy – he lives in squalor because he can’t be bothered to clean his house (also because apparently he has a fondness for spiders). He slithers out of things; he does not like to answer direct questions or commit to doing anything. He is a talented magician, able to do complex and rather difficult spells in a rather slapdash and offhand manner.
He is not a bad person, per se, but you will have a hard time squeezing that fact out of him.
He is also in love with Sophie at the end!
Involvement
Edit
- Arthur Pendragon - King Arthur, with no sense of humor. :( And a magic-hater to boot. Howl is still appropriating his last name, no matter what the kid says.
- Casca
- Faye Valentine
- Guts - Has a nasty demon brand, which Howl put a seal on to stop it from bleeding in the presence of demonic forces. Guts isn't the kind of guy he'd normally hang out with, really, but Howl feels sort of sorry that he's in such an ugly situation and likes him well enough in spite of how different they are, besides finding the project interesting, so it's all good. :)
- Joshua Kiryu - A slippery sort, not that Howl exactly minds. Actually he can sort of relate. Either way, he seems clever, if not exactly trustworthy, but what's a magical castle without a few mysteries to go in it? Will be keeping an eye on this one.
- Moonbay - A young lady who knew him when he was here in the past. She is quite charming *___* Howl enjoys their conversations, and will help her out when she needs it without too much whining and bitching. This is something, for him!
- Yamanaka Ino: So very charming *___* he has great fun flirting with her!
- Yuan: A quiet fellow who's been in the castle for a long time. Interesting to talk to, although if Howl knew how hilarious Yuan found him he would probably be rather miffed.
- Zelman Clock - A vampire and apparently some kind of royalty with a propensity to deflection and a hell of an ego? Well, in most parts, Howl can actually relate. He's a fun guy to talk to so far.
