Background
Edit
Mun will fix all typos when she is not falling asleep!
Kanda was born in a hole a child of about nine-years-old in the Sixth Asia Research Facility. Nine years ago, the Order had begun a secret project to create artificial disciples to synch with the Innocence. Because a normal human's body cannot handle the rejection of Innocence and would die, the Order created artificial test bodies with the ability to regenerate all wounds. Two bodies were successful, Kanda Yuu and Alma Karma. As soon as Kanda was born, he was forced to synch with Innocence, killing him multiple times every session. After death, it would take about ten minutes to regenerate before the next attempt would begin. Kanda sort of hated the Innocence and the world he was born into and sort of just wanted to go back to sleep in his little hole. He also began hallucinating a strange woman in the mist in the cold room he was born. Concepts like "mother" and "father" were foreign to him, because he never had them.
In reality, Kanda did have parents... but in another life. The truth behind the second exorcist project? Kanda was an exorcist who died on the battle field, but whose body was collected by the Order and whose brain was then implanted into an artificial body, a child. His memories were wiped clean, his real body was mummified and fixed to his Innocence -- the one Kanda was forced to synch with. The test was to see if it was possible to continue synchro even after death. Kanda's "hallucinations" were in fact memories of his past life, the woman was a person from his life before he was "Yuu". When it was discovered that Kanda was regaining his memories, he was slated to be disposed of. Just as he realized, overcome with anger, the true nature of the project, the Order "put him down" by sending him into a permanent coma. Assaulted by his past memories even in a coma, Kanda's Innocence appears before him, waking him from his sleep. He uses his Innocence to escape.
More so, Kanda met Alma, the other test subject. Alma was bright, happy, always wanting to please and make friends. Kanda hated him passionately and couldn't understand how Alma could laugh when their world was so utterly horrible. Alma stalked Kanda relentlessly and eventually Kanda understood Alma's POV a bit better, laughing along with him after both them were a mess after their synchro session. They became friends, but Alma, trying to save Kanda from disposal, synched with an Innocence, killed a few members of the ninja-like group Crow, and discovered their real bodies. Losing his mind (?), Alma massacred the entire lab, killing 46 personnel. Kanda, the only survivor, was forced to hack Alma to pieces until he stopped regenerating. Kanda was under the impression he had killed Alma.
Kanda eventually synched with his Innocence, but now hallucinates(?) lotus flowers. After the massacre, Kanda met Tiedoll and traveled the world with him for a year before they returned to the Order. Kanda met Lenalee, who thought he was a girl, and Marie (once again). At age 12, cook Jeryy joined the Order and Kanda ate soba for the first time, falling in love with it and eating it everyday for all of his meals, I am not even kidding. At 16, Kanda met Lavi, who called him by his first name. Only Lenalee saved Lavi from dying that day. After almost killing Allen, he decided he hates him a lot.
Other things you should know: Kanda hates people who don't keep their promises and less so, naive people. He defeated Skin Boric, a Noah, in the arc, but it cost him more of his life, causing his tattoo to go tribal. Since then, he's just being doing his missions, being pissy, meditating, and hating on Allen. He also values his hair ties so much so that he took down half of the Order to find Bookman, who stole it. His only goal in life is to live long enough to find "That Person," who appears to be a woman that had something to do with his killing Alma. Pretty much, he doesn't give a crap about the Order, but still follows their orders, all in the hopes of finding one person. Fucked up? A little, yeah.
More recently, Kanda was killed by Wisely and brought the North American branch, where he awoke on top of a comatose, patchwork Alma. Instead of reacting, he attacked the Earl, who had the entire staff at his mercy. As Allen and Kanda attempted to escape, they were stopped by the Noah. Alma was presented before Kanda. Playing dumb, he questioned who Alma was. Everyone in the room WTF'd. As Road explained how the Order used Alma as a test subject all those years while allowing him to think Alma was dead, Kanda started to, um, lose his temper. Especially when she mentioned "the woman who made him slit Alma." Then Wisely sent them into flashback land where Allen had a front row view to each and every one of Kanda's horrible, horrible memories. :|b
something something in love with Alma.
Personality
Edit
Tsundere. Update: Hero from a romance novel IDK
He hates you. He hates your dog, too. In fact, he hates everything. Except his sword. This is probably because he was a lab rat who was force fed lies, was taught about how to kill akuma and not about winter or parents, and was then made to kill his best friend. At times he's a bit naive because he's sort of only 9-years-old and expects people to do the rational thing (he gets flustered when Allen tricks him during a spar, because Allen wasn't playing fair). He's uber pragmatic and has a pretty linear thought process. He's quick witted in battle and can assess his enemies pretty well. He has no fear of death since he'll regenerate. Despite himself, he'll go out of his way to protect the people he ...tolerates. He's a character who's all about the mission.
Since he finally fulfilled is his desire to find the person he loved in another life and the best friend he thought he killed is now alive, Kanda's found a kind of happy he's never known before. He probably won't be the fluffiest kitten in the litter, but he might stop making your grandmother and children cry.
Abilities
Edit
Another D.Gray-man godmod? NO WAI.
Non-Innocence related:

Added by Kat1Oh lawd. Kanda was a test tube baby and appears to have some pretty crazy strength, considering at age 9 he was able to dodge attacks while carrying a 242 lb man on his back like he weighed NOTHING. We've also seen him take out piles and piles of people in hand-to-hand combat. He's a skilled martial artist. He's also fast. A lot of characters don't seem to notice him move until he's attacked. He also jumps like a grasshopper.
He's an incredibly skilled swordsman, even without his Innocence sword, considering he cuts through a giant chandelier like it was butter.
Kanda is also capable of regeneration. If his arm falls off? He'll grow a new one. If he's poisoned? It won't affect him. If you crush his brain into soup? He'll be cool in a few minutes. He was tortured on a daily basis as a child so, uh, pain doesn't bother him that much.
Apparently, his blood can also heal the wounds of other people when it comes into contact with that wound.
Innocence:
Mugen is his equipment-type sword, made from a substance called Innocence. Innocence is basically this mysterious holy substance that's really powerful and often causes weird shit to happen; it's built to destroy dark matter, which akuma (the demons in DGM) are made from. But if you're a demon from a different canon, you'll probably react badly to it since it's a weapon of God. His attacks are all based around the concept of illusions and in theory there are six in total. It's crazy strong and cuts buildings like swiss cheese. We've seen four and they all have stupid shounen names:
1. Kaichu Ichigen (Underworld Insects): He swings his blades and creepy bugs come out and blow stuff up
2. Nigentou (Double Illusion Blades): Mugen becomes surrounded by energy and a second blade forms from this energy. So Kanda has two swords to cut you with.
2.1 Hakka Tourou (...Eight Flowers Praying Mantis...): Eight quick slices release an energy blasty thing that resembles a flower.
3. Shouka (Sublimate): Kanda gets juiced up by his tattoo, his pupils split into three dots each and veins appear around his eyes (except for in the recent chapter where they didn't). The attacks he uses while juiced up literally suck away at his life. And like a dumbass, he uses it kind of a lot. |D
3.1 Sangenshiki (three illusions): Kanda gets so fast his opponent can't see him and it's the Innocence version of steroids, he's juiced UP. His ability to heal is slowed down when using this technique because his sword is busy draining his life.
3.2 Consume: Even if you break his sword into little bits, it will recollect itself by energy for one last ditch attack.
3.3. Bakuhakuzan (Explosive Spirit Slash): This slash seems to create explosions and can cut through a lvl 4 akuma.
UM, I'll back to you on four. It seems like he gets even faster and stronger.
5. Um... he turns Super Saiyan and you can't kill him, but he can electrocute you with the psycho beams he radiates, I mean energy. Not likely to see this form in Paradisa.

Notes about character interactions. May contain spoilers for D.Gray-man.
D.Gray-Man
Edit
- Bean Sprout: Idiot Bean Sprout. Seriously can't stand him.
- Cloud Nyne: General, more tolerable than his
- Komui Lee: Che, he'll follow his orders
- The Millennium Earl: DIAF
- Miranda Lotto: No opinion D: sorry Miranda
- Ravi: Idiot rabbit
- Lenalee Lee: Clipboards him :C And gets away with it.
- Tyki Mikk: Noah with the perm.
- Wisely: Bastard Noah who crushed his head in and said the A-word. Most annoying Noah ever.
- Alma Karma: The other test subject. Alma is everything Kanda is not: sweet, curious about the world, loveable, happy-go-lucky, friendly. Kanda hated him at first, but eventually they became friends, Kanda's first one! Until Alma massacred the whole facility and Kanda had to hack him to pieces until he stopped regenerating. Yeah. To make it worse, the Order hide Alma from Kanda for nine years, continuing to experiment on the boy. After Wisely showed Alma Kanda's memories, he woke and became an Akuma. The psychological trauma caused Kanda to lose his shit, try to kill Alma, and stab Allen. When he came to his senses, he tried to save Alma, but Alma self-destructed. It was then that Kanda learned Alma was also THAT PERSON, the woman he's been searching for his entire life. Kanda tries to save what's left of Alma and they leave the Order to be together. Instead, they ended up in Paradisa and Kanda gets his honeymoon.
- Noise Marie: IDK my BFF Marie? Marie is the only one who can shut Kanda up during a rampage and live to tell about it. They're bros. Kanda has known Marie since he was a child. Marie helped pull a Crow needle from Kanda's back and then despite wondering if he should kill all everyone in the lab, Kanda chose to save Marie from the second exorcist project. Since then, they've been constant comrades, both serving as pupils under Tiedoll. Kanda trusts Marie and seems to loosen up (even the slightest) around him.
Paradisa
Edit
Cassandra: He's not sure what to make of her. It's easier for him to be around her because she's a strong fighter but doesn't ask him questions or pry into his life. She's not an idiot, so that's always a plus. He finds it really freaking annoying the castle seems to throw them together every chance it gets. What's with that, srsly?
Ino: SHE IS REALLY PERSISTENT AND IRRITATING. She claims they were "friends" when he was here before, which he finds really hard to believe. He has a very sinking feeling he'll grow accustomed to her pestering.
Colette: Kanda has a lot of trouble dealing with sweet-natured people like her. See: Alma. But like Ino, he finds himself growing more accustomed to her.
Alice: That stupid rabbit left. Alice was a lot like he was a child, so her 'idiocy' was a little more understandable to him. |D
Ragna the Bloodedge: Idiot.
