The Background
Edit
Lance Sweets started his struggle for family at an early age. His biological mother was a travelling carnival performer who gave him up for adoption when he was a baby. When he wasn’t adopted right away, he was placed in the foster system, where he had the misfortune to wind up in an abusive home for the most part, something he still, literally carries the scars from. When he was six years-old, he was adopted by an older couple who took better care of him, and helped nurture his growth as both a person and an academic. He later said that they led him to believe that even broken people can be saved by people with good hearts.
Clearly intellectually gifted, he started attending the University of Toronto as an undergraduate at age fourteen, and went on to obtain a Masters in abnormal psychology from Temple University and two doctorates in clinical psychology and behavioral analysis from the University of Pennsylvania all before the age of twenty-two. In order to obtain money for grad school, he taught psychology tricks to car salesmen, a fact that he isn’t proud of. Once he turned eighteen, he tried to track down his biological mother, who was working as a psychic in Florida, though the status of their relationship is still unknown. Six months before his arrival at the Jeffersonian, both his parents passed away within weeks of each other, leaving him alone as far as family was concerned.
When Sweets initially came to work at the Jeffersonian, it was to evaluate whether or not Dr. Brennan and Agent Booth could continue to work together as partners after the arrest of her father. At first he had a hard time getting them to work with him—Booth thought he was too young, and Brennan disregarded his profession as a whole—but eventually they slowly built a steady relationship that lead to Sweets getting out into the field more and doing work like profiling and interrogations. Through the course of this he manages to build relationships with the other members of the Jeffersonian, who start to turn to him when it comes to figuring out personal issues, as well as forming a romantic relationship with Daisy Wick, one of Dr. Brennan’s potential assistants after Zack was incarcerated when it was revealed he was working with Gormogon. He also works with counseling Zack as well, who entrusted him with the knowledge that he didn’t actually kill anyone when working for Gormogon, he was just a part of it.
Losses
Edit
- Permanent: Memory of Zack's confession in 404: The Perfect Pieces in the Purple Pond
- Bartender: Spent a week thinking he was a bartender rather than a psychologist. Still hasn't quite figured out the castle logic on that one.
- Are You my Mother?: Sweets was turned into a baby duck for a week and a half and was transported from person to person, to imprint on each of these people. Long story short: He met a lot of people, and discovered the joy of swimming.
People
Edit
- Dr. Temperance Brennan - Has only been here once, to his knowledge, and only for a short period of time, but she often dismisses his profession and his work.
- Special Agent Seeley Booth - An FBI Agent, Dr. Brennan's partner, and someone who has a bit more faith in his profession than she does. Booth was only here for a short while as well, and for a while was the only person who actually knew who Sweets was.
- Dr. Jack Hodgins - Was here for longer than most of his other counterparts, with the exception of Zack, and had no idea who he was for a while. They managed to restore their relationship, however, even if it was mostly Hodgins getting on his case for being a psychologist.
- Dr. Zack Addy - Accidentally was outed as a killer by Sweets, and has something to do with Sweets' loss, but Sweets hasn't figured out what it was yet, and he has since gone home so it doesn't really matter anymore.
- Dean Winchester - Saved him from a dinosaur once. No, really -- a dinosaur. That Dean's gone home, but he came back and now Sweets is trying to be a bit more of a friend again -- though, he's just as bad at taking Sweets' field seriously as the people at the Jeffersonian are.
- Krevlornswath of the Deathwok Clan (Lorne) - Thought he was a bartender in his bar once while he was on a loss. Now he just hangs out in Caritas a lot. And occasionally sings.
- Freelancer York/Delta - [Patient] York sees Sweets for a various number of reasons, but they also bond over the awesome things that York has done and Sweets would love to do, were the technology possible.
- Agent Kay - [Patient] He works with aliens, which Sweets finds amazingly awesome, and he also is relatively easy to talk to, when the proper situation arises.
- Agent Jay - Kay's partner. They're just starting to get to know each other, but Sweets likes him quite a bit as well.
- Harmony Kendall - Someone new he's also getting to know. She's bright and a bit blond, but he likes her. He thinks she's friendly and he'll never not talk to someone who's friendly. Currently his receptionist.
- Jilly Coppercorn - Met her when she was on a loss, but can't help but be curious about her, as he is with all people that have complicated pasts. It reminds him of his own, and he wants to help those people get past it the way his parents helped him.
- Larry Paul - A fellow music lover and piano man. Chats with him whenever he has the opportunity.
Friends from Duckling Loss
Edit
- Justin Russo - Has since gone home.
- Nathan Ford - Took him to a bar, which was interesting enough. He has since returned and come back, but Sweets hasn't interacted with him much yet. Since gone home. Is back, but Sweets hasn't spoken with him yet.
- Joanna Beth 'Jo' Harvelle - [Patient] Jo was actually fun. She built him a fun park in her bathtub. It took her some time to get her to talk to him patient-wise, though, but he thinks he's making some kind of a difference. Her life? Really complicated.
- Sora - Hasn't talked to him much since the loss either. But he is an incredibly optimistic kid.
- Eunice Bloom - They play chess on occasion. Or checkers. It's fun.
- Delirium - A friend from before the loss, but she was on a bit of a malevolent loss at the time, so he was a little worried about what it was she'd do. Has since gone home.
- Leonard L. Church - Has since gone home.
- Ukitake Jyuushiro - Really nice guy, who he should talk to more, now that he's not a duckling.
- Lindsay Monroe - [Patient] Has since gone home.
- Lindsey McDonald - They didn't get along as well. He didn't appreciate Lindsey's sense of humor. Has since gone home.
Items
Edit
- Office - He has an office in the city. He hasn't had a chance to really use it yet, due to the swamp, but he plans on putting it to good use.
