Making Changes and Plotting Events

Contents

WHAT DO I HAVE TO GET APPROVED? Edit

The following are all considered significant events and need to be passed by a moderator or helper before they can be carried out.

  • Loss changes
  • Canon point changes
  • Character restarts
  • Character deaths
  • Major plots (world changes, “no opt out”)
  • Minor plots (in-castle events, “opt out”)
  • Destructive events
  • Questionable content

In the past players have used an event from a plot ending to update their characters canon, as always this sort of change will have to be approved by a mod.

Characters that have not been introduced yet can have their losses and canon points changed without consequence by speaking with a mod.

HOW DO I... Edit

... change a loss? Edit

To change a loss, a character must either:

  • die
  • suffer a severe temporary loss
  • be knocked unconscious for several days

Please post to the plot entry page with your proposed changes and plan of action.

... change a canon point? Edit

To change a canon point, a character must either:

  • die
  • suffer a severe temporary loss
  • be knocked unconscious for one week, at minimum

Please post to the plot entry page with your proposed changes and plan of action.

... restart my character? Edit

Restarting a character is as simple as posting to the plot entry or contacting a mod and getting the approval. Any loss changes or canon point changes should be mentioned and confirmed.

In character, it’s as easy as having your character start off with a fresh new introduction, just as you’d introduce any new character into the world of Paradisa.

Be warned that restarting a character means losing all character relations (CR) and prior knowledge of anything that has happened in the castle.

WHAT IS... Edit

... a major plot? Edit

A major plot is an event that effects all characters in a significant way, usually by means of a world-change. It’s an event that more or less cannot be opted out of; if a player is ever uncomfortable with a plot or busy, there are usually ways to write their characters into the background/assume what they did for the week.

World changes are when Paradisa changes its appearance entirely, usually to the appearance of a particular resident’s world. Characters are usually made to live life as people in that world normally would, and during some plots all characters are made human and stripped of any powers.

Tips on submitting major plots Edit

  • Check the Past Plots page. While we certainly welcome variations on older plots, we ask that plots always have something unique or different about them compared to previous, similar plots.
  • We like to keep a good balance between cracky/fluff and serious/“grimdark” plots. If you submit a plot that follows too closely to what we’ve had “a lot of lately”, we may delay it a bit and allow some “other” stuff through first.
  • Be prepared to make decisions and answer questions. Players usually ask things you haven’t thought of, or may have characters that might be exceptions to any rules you lay down. It’s your responsibility to be the “figure of authority” on the plot and know your material, and make sure that players know everything they need to know.
  • Provide events. Players may not know the canon you’re creating a plot from, and might not know what they can do. Providing a set list of events, maybe one for each day of the plot, gives people something to do and something to participate in.
  • Don’t feel pressured to make a plot a whole week long. Lots of plots lose steam towards the end of the week because there aren’t enough events or people simply don’t have enough material to work with for an entire week. Shorter 3-5 day plots can be just as fun!
  • After submitting, if you aren’t replied to and given a date within the next few days, don’t worry. We usually have a backlog of plots for 1-2 months in advance, so we’ll get to you when we’re ready for you.
  • Any content that is questionable in any way, shape or form HAS to be in the original plot entry. Any questionable contest introduced afterwards that is NOT detailed in the original post WILL be frozen. We cannot plan for everything, but if something comes up, the mods MUST be contacted first.

... a minor plot? Edit

A minor plot is an event with a major “opt out” function that only characters who volunteer to be a part of it participate in. It can be anything from a minor attack where involvement is coincidental or circumstantial (some creature going rogue, two residents getting into a super-powered fight, etc) to something larger scale (every character is offered the chance to be involved.) These are generally single-day events or spread out over a few days, and they are rarely longer than that.

... considered "destructive"? Edit

Destructive events are events that cause damage to the castle or city, or the people in the city –– decimating buildings, setting things on fire, desecrating the forest, injuring or killing townspeople.

... considered "questionable content"? Edit

Sometimes it is IC for characters to do less-than-morally-upstanding things. Murder, torture, rape, etc. While murder is softened somewhat by the fact that death is not permanent in Paradisa, iffy subjects like torture and rape can be rather intense, as Paradisa tends to avoid cushioning these ordeals.

While we understand the appeal of darker plots, especially with characters who may (or will) be inclined to do such things, we are interested in keeping players comfortable. It doesn’t matter how buried these things are in threads and logs; once it becomes public knowledge, it spreads fast around the community, and we want to keep things running smoothly.

We ask that muns looking for a torture or rape plot come and speak to the mod team before starting the plot so we can run over what’s going on, what’s happening, and ensure it’s appropriate and being handled properly. If we feel things are going in a way that makes players uncomfortable, we may have the castle “intervene”.

Even so, we ask that any log or thread related to those subjects be done in personal journals and linked to with clear and descriptive warnings about the content.

FIXING MISTAKES Edit

Continuing Canons Edit

When playing a character from a continuing canon, sometimes new revelations are made and new stuff comes up. There may be things that, logically, characters should have known about all along, but as that information hadn't been revealed in canon at the time, the mun couldn't have possibly known about it. Worse yet, sometimes unplanned sequels or continuations to canon come along and everything gets even more confusing.

If you would like to reset, simply speak to a mod and that will get sorted out.

If you would like to work through it, "The Castle was meddling with his/her memories" is an acceptable excuse. Again, clear this with a mod, and if necessary, make a post to the OOC to ensure that other players know what's going on.

Retcons Edit

Retcon, short for "retro-active continuity", is the deliberate changing of previously established fact. It's a big deal compared to more minor things associated with continuing canons.

Sometimes the most ridiculous things happen in canon, sometimes along the lines of "A-HA! All along, you [and the audience] thought I was THAT, but I'm actually THIS!"

If you've been playing the character as THAT when they should have been a THIS, the whole thing can be a huge nightmare to deal with in Paradisa.

How to deal with it varies depending on what the retcon was, how intense it was, and how much it actually messed up things. Of course, the "meddling Castle" excuse still works, and the "reset" option is still available, but sometimes it's possible to continue playing them as they were before... it's all a matter of what's going on in canon.

Please consult your canonmates (if you have any), other players familiar with canon, and mods, and we can work through it.
