Background
Edit
Newton Pulsifer worked in a dead-end job as a wages clerk for a large accounting firm for most of his life. One of Newt’s fantasies was becoming someone important in the army, and the closest thing he could find to an actual army was the Witchfinder Army, a group headed by a cranky old man named Shadwell. It wasn’t really an army- Newt was the only one besides Shadwell- but Newt was convinced that becoming a Witchfinder would propel him towards being a person who everyone would admire.
This didn’t really work out. In fact, when Newt was sent out on a mission to Tadsfield to investigate the almost-too-perfect phenomena there, he met a witch.
Instead of exorcising her or burning her on the stake like he should have done as a Witchfinder, he fell in love with her.
The witch’s name was Anathema Device, and she was the ancestor of Agnes Nutter, a woman who wrote a book call The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch.
Unbeknownst to him, Newton Pulsifer’s ancestor, Thou-Shalt-Not-Commit-Adultery Pulsifer, was a Witchfinder who was responsible for identifying Agnes as a witch and burning her at the stake.
He probably rolled in his grave at the moment that Newt and Anathema got together. Hypothetically, of course, because Thou-Shalt-Not-Commit-Adultery Pulsifer had no grave- he had been blown up by the blast of the dynamite Agnes Nutter had placed underneath her clothes.
And then the Witchfinder and the witch tried to stop the oncoming Apocalypse, and Newt managed to prevent a nuclear plant from exploding by "fixing" the machines that controlled the plant.
And the world was saved, all because Newt had been himself.
Or something like that.
Personality
Edit
If Newton Pulsifer could be described in one word, it would be “wannabe”.
Ever since he was a young boy, Newt always wanted to be greater than he really was. Constant daydreams about being someone like James Bond, or being the father of revolutionizing the computer world, always hung around in Newt’s head. The problem was that Newton wasn’t really so great. He was ordinary, wishy-washy, and did nothing more in life than work at his mundane job at being a wages clerk and collect esoteric information which no one really needed.
For many years, Newt tried to get a cause to work towards and believe in, but always failed at it. He tried getting into religion, and that didn’t work out. He tried being an atheist, but he couldn’t believe in it hard enough. He even tried to take the view of scientists who used big words like “quantum” and “chaos” but eventually found that they had no clue as to what the universe was like and didn’t even believe in it. Newt realized for a long time that belief was something that everyone was supposed to have, but yet, he couldn’t even find anything he could really believe in.
Although his ancestor burned people at the stake, Newt is a kind soul who has rather lofty dreams he knows that he never will achieve. He tries to see the best in everyone, and is very straightforward when it comes to problem-solving. However, Newt has a rather bitter side that comes out in his cynical remarks, and won’t hesitate to use sarcasm to express his true feelings about a situation. He’s somewhat awkward in conversation, and will often say things he will regret afterward. Above all, he cares for the people around him, and tries to make them realize who they should as opposed to who they already are, like when he questions Anathema whether being a follower of Agnes’ prophecies is really something she wants to do the rest of her life.
All Newt really wants in life is to be someone better then he really is. He knows how ordinary he really is, and at times, tries to act like someone he’s not. He wants to do things he’s never done, like eating Thai food or going to America, but has never had the heart to do it. Big dreams yet little determination- that is what makes up Newton Pulsifer.
Re Relationships
Edit
Anthony J. Crowley- The Serpent of Eden and a really annoying demon. Newt knows that Crowley tried to save the world from the Apocalypse, but that still doesn't change that fact that Crowley is an annoying prat who teases Newt whatever chance he can get. Also, it horrifies Newt that, through Shadwell, he was technically working for Crowley all this time as a Witchfinder.
Aziraphale- An angel who is Crowley's friend and also helped to save the world from the Apocalypse. Newt likes Aziraphale better than Crowley, but he is uncomfortable with the fact that Aziraphale isn't as angelic as most people would suppose he was. That, and he's pretty protective of his books.
Draco Malfoy- A rather pretentious wizard who helped Newt out of the duck pond when he first arrived in Paradisa. He's rather annoying.
