Nudge
"Uh, I don't think so. Can you spell your name for me, sweetie?"
"Uh-huh. It's K-R-Y-S-T-A-L. I like my name. It's pretty. What's your name?"
"Sarah. Sarah McCauley."
"Well, that's an okay name too. Do you wish it was something different? Like, sometimes I wish my name was kind of fancier, you know? Like — Cleopatra. Or Marie-Sophie-Therese. Did you know that the queen of England has, like, six names? Her name is Elizabeth Alexandra Mary. Her last name is Windsor. But she's so famous she just signs her name 'Elizabeth R,' and everyone knows who it is. I'd like to be that famous someday. I would just sign 'Krystal.'"
The agent was silent for a moment, then she seemed to recover herself. "Have you ever heard of a place called the School?" she asked. "We think it's in California. Have you ever been to California?"
Nudge looked thoughtfully at the ceiling. "California? Like, surfers and movie stars and earthquakes? No. I'd like to go. Is it pretty?" Her large brown eyes looked innocently at the agent.

background
Edit
Nudge is a recombinant life-form, 98% human, and 2% avian. She was bred in a lab known only as the School, where experiments rendered her, and five other children like her, into human/bird hybrids. Her biological parents either sold her, donated her, or had her stolen from them. Because of her loss, Nudge knows nothing about them, and thinks that she is a test tube baby.
For the first seven years of her life, she endured a hellish existence at the school. She, along with Max, Fang, Iggy, the Gasman and Angel, were constantly being experimented on, tested and tweaked by the scientists, whom they called the 'whitecoats'. They were kept in small cages in the lab 24/7, only being taken out for experiments or tests. This lead to extreme claustrophobia, hatred of the smell of chemicals, and a healthy dosage of paranoia in them all. They were mutated in several ways, which manifested not only in their bird genes, but in strange powers and abilities as well.
When Nudge was seven, Jeb Batchelder, the only kind whitecoat in the facility, smuggled them all out of the School, and took them to a safe haven far away; a house in the woods hidden away from the world. There, they got their fist experience of something resembling normal life. They were free to come and go as they pleased, they got regular meals, they could play and laugh and have fun, and they had Jeb as a father figure, looking after them and taking care of them. He taught them self defense, since it was always possible that the School would come looking for them, or worse, send their henchmen, the Erasers (half human, half wolf hybrids). Jeb taught them how to survive.
Two years later, however, Jeb mysteriously disappeared. The flock assumed that he had been found, and killed by the School, as punishment for freeing them. After that, they had to become even more careful and even more vigilant. They started taking care of themselves, and Max assumed her natural role as leader.
Two years after that, when Nudge was eleven, just when it seemed like they might have a semi-normal life, things were thrown into pandemonium. Angel was kidnapped by the School, which led to a wild rescue mission to get her back. During the course of this mission, they discover that Jeb is still alive, and possibly on the School's side, find out a lot of stuff about their pasts, and their parents, and Nudge develops her first power. She has clairsentience, a kind of psychometric ability that allows her to get extrasensory perceptions from objects. She also discovers that she has quite a knack for computers.
After rescuing Angel (and nabbing Total the talking dog from the School too), they're on the run again. Life is never peaceful, but it's never dull, either.

personality
Edit

Added by Sahara StormNudge, in many ways, is the quintessential pre-teen girl. She’s inquisitive, cheerful, absolutely full of energy, and often has the attention span of a gnat. She loves fashion, games, anything new, interesting, and fun, and she especially loves to talk. If given the opportunity, she will talk the heads off of everyone around her, and she rarely bothers to filter her thoughts before she speaks. She’s got a huge imagination and a smart mouth, and she adores using them both.
She is different from most kids her age, though, and not just because of the 2% avian DNA in her. Being brought up at the School was a nightmare, and it left her (and the others) with a deep claustrophobia, a fear of people in white coats, a hatred of the smell of chemicals, and more than a few trust issues. She’s been trained to expect danger at the unlikeliest times, and to never let her guard down. She can lie at the drop of a hat, with a completely straight face.
Despite all of this, however, Nudge is probably one of the most well-adjusted members of the flock. She is amicable, never angry or unpleasant, and a team player all around. She’s usually the one to back up Max in whatever she’s doing or saying. In addition, once she’s relatively sure that it’s safe, she is super friendly.
Nudge knows that she is ‘special’, and loves it most days. After living a life of fear and danger, however, always running and fighting for her life, she sometimes wants nothing more than to be normal, and do stuff normal girls do. She’s not in love with the concept of school, but she has an extremely inquisitive mind, and an avid love of learning. This causes her to separate from the flock for a while, but she comes back soon enough, because ultimately, family is the most important thing to her. They protect her at all costs, and she’d do the same for them. While typically seen as the ‘girly one’, she can get downright ferocious when fighting and protecting her family. She pulls her own weight in the team, and is normally the cautious follower, but has a heck of a stubborn and rebellious streak.
Nudge’s passion is for fashion, but she has a wide range of other interests, including books, animals, music, cars, wildlife, historical stuff, cute stuff, and computers. She never actually went to school (only for very short periods of time) but she is quite intelligent, when she deigns to show that intelligence. She seriously loves learning new stuff, and will voraciously eat up information on whatever her new passion is, whether it be marine biology, American history, or cheerleading.
She loves the flock more than anything or any other people in the entire world. The five of them are pretty much all she has, and she especially adores Max, who takes care of her and loves her and is sometimes like a surrogate mom. But Nudge really, really wants parents; REAL parents, and not a big brother and sister who have to act like a dad and mom. Finding parents is what propelled her through much of the series, in the early books. Her loss, therefore, is a devastating blow. But this girl never lets much get her down for long; she is the optimism queen.
In a nutshell, Nudge is the sweetest girl you ever met that you wish came with an off switch. Because seriously, once she's in her comfort zone, she never shuts up.

Added by Sahara Storm- First off, the wings. Nudge’s are tawny brown, and she’s got a wingspan that’s a little more than 12 feet from tip to tip. They’re retractable, and when they do, she fits them into grooves along her shoulders and spine. Throw on a coat and ta-da! She’s totally normal. Except... for the suspicious bulkiness of the coat, but shhh. TL;DR, she can fly.
- All birdkids have light, airy bones to easily facilitate flying, and extra muscles all over their bodies for the same reason.
- Her lungs and heart are bigger than normal. And beneath her lungs, around the stomach area, she has extra air-sacs. It's what allows her to fly so high up, where the air is thin.
- Their red blood cells have nuclei in them. A transfusion from a human would probably poison/kill them.
- No, her heart is not racing. It regularly beats a heck of a lot faster than humans. Kinda like – you guessed it – a bird.
- Ideally, she needs about 3000-4000 calories per day. Sadly, being constantly on the run doesn’t leave much room for snacking. Nudge is always hungry, though, and could probably easily manage upwards of 5000 calories a day.
- Speed. She can do upwards of 120 mph in the air, and a lot faster if she’s in a dive.
- On the ground, she's very, very fast as well. Out-running grown men? No problem.
- She has an inherent sense of direction. She has no idea how it works, but she does know that she can never get lost.
- While they don’t have super strength, exactly, birdkids are a lot stronger than humans. Nudge is strong enough to snap a grown man’s neck, or crush his ribcage with a well-placed kick.
- It’s nothing fancy, but she was trained in street fighting by Jeb and Max. She was taught to fight dirty, and never give the enemy a chance to gain the upper hand. She can, and will sock you a good one.
- She's fast, and has very, very quick reflexes. She's quick on her feet (and wings) in a fight, and it's hard to blindside her.
- Raptor vision. Hi there, speck on the horizon. She sees you! Can see in the dark pretty well, too.
- Enhanced hearing.
- Advanced regeneration. About four times faster than humans.
special abilities
Edit
- Nudge is a kind of computer genius. There’s no system she can’t hack her way into, and once she’s in, extracting the information she needs is easy. It might be something that just comes to her, or it might be part of that pesky genetic mutation thing. It could also be facilitated by her...
- Clairsentience. By touching an object, she is able to get a visual percept of the emotions, actions, events, and people connected to that object. If she touches the screen of a computer, she can see the last few things that appeared on the screen, or things that are habitually typed on the keyboard. If she touches a chair, she’ll see the person who sits there normally, and get a sense of what that person is like. If she touches an artist’s pencil, she might see the last thing he drew with it, and what he was feeling at the time. If she ever touches Bad Girl’s bat, she’ll be traumatised for life. She can control this ability, but sometimes, it kicks in on its own. Let’s hope for her sake it never kicks in while she’s touching the walls of the castle.
- She can attract metal things to her when she wants to. It’s a pretty useless power, unless someone is, you know, pointing a gun at her. (Of course, that can backfire in soooo many ways.) MAGNET GIRL FTW!
- She knows the ins and out of cars like nobody's business, and can probably fix all of your car problems.
- She's very handy with a needle and is fabulously fashion-conscious.
relationships
Edit
Nudge is super friendly; the ultimate pre-teen social butterfly. Once she’s determined that there’s no danger around, she’s eager to make friends. It’s a wonderful, new experience for her, and she loves it.

the flock
Edit
- Max: Nudge downright adores Max. She’s gutsy, spunky, doesn’t take crap from anyone, is the best fighter she knows, and most importantly, she takes care of Nudge and the rest of the flock. None of them would have survived without Max. In her, Nudge finds the best possible combination of mother, big sister, friend, and leader. She looks up to Max in everything, and rarely ever goes against her, except, of course, in ‘MAX’. It was only temporary, though. Nudge loves Max like burning, but is not above trying to charm her into doing things Nudge wants. (One word: France.)
- Fang: Fang! Nudges absolutely dotes on Fang, even if he is all quiet and stoic. He’s the essential big brother; he’s strong and dependable and he looks out for her. They bonded really well those couple of days when they stayed with the hawks. He taught her a few neat tricks, too. She gets really worried when he’s hurt. This latest development with him and Max surprised her, but ultimately pleases her.
- Iggy: Ig! Iggy’s a lot of fun, even if he can get a little mean with his terse remarks sometimes. It’s awesome when Max and Fang go off and leave him in charge, because he doesn’t exactly push the rules. <3 He’s an awesome cook (even though he’s blind... wtf) and eating his cooking is a million times better than Max’s (sorry Max! She still loves you!). The ability to create explosives is cool too, once he’s not blowing up her stuff.
- The Gasman: Oh, Gazzy. He’s the closest to her in age, and they have fun playing together. When he’s not being an annoying little brother, that is! As if the hyper-activeness and constantly mimicking people wasn’t enough, there are the nuclear farts. (Yes, nuclear farts.) Despite that, Nudge loves the Gasman, because he’s family. The fact that he frequently makes the bad guys blow up is fun too.
- Angel: The baby of the family. Being the two younger girls, they hang out together a lot, and share a compulsive love of cute animals and fluffy stuff. She’s another playmate for Nudge, and even though she’s a little spoilt. Angel is... well, an angel; adorable and sweet. Except when she’s being all creepy. The mind reading thing is useful, but weird. Ditto for the mind control thing. STOP MAKING HER CHANGE HER MIND, ANGEL.
- Total: Their talking mutant dog. ♥

Edit
- Jeb: He saved them from the nightmare that was the School, even though he was one of the whitecoats. He made them safe, taught them stuff, and looked after them. And then he died. Now it turns out that he didn’t die, and they don’t know for sure if he’s on their side or not. He's been responsible for capturing them many times. It confuses Nudge. She did love Jeb a lot, but that kind of betrayal cuts deep. Max doesn’t trust him, so she follows suit, but now, she's slowly beginning to... like him again. But not trust. She may never trust him again.
- Ari: Ari was Jeb's 7-year-old son. The white-coats turned him into an Eraser, a half wolf hybrid, and he's been trying to capture and kill them from day one. Nudge hated him, because he was always following them, and hurting them, and just messing stuff up in general. After an unexpected twist, he came to be on their side, and ended up saving their lives. She never completely trusted him, but she did grow to like him a bit. It was really sad when he expired. He didn't deserve that; no one does.
- Dr. Martinez: Max’s mom! Nudge is so happy for Max, that she found her. She’s a really nice lady who actually helps them. And her cooking is awesome. And she helped Nudge tame her hair. A+++
- Ella: Max’s half-sister. She’s pretty cool.
- Anne Walker: A really nice lady who took them in, let them live at her awesome house, made them go to school, and gave them a taste of what it feels like to be normal. Nudge in particular clung to her; even though she didn't really know what to do with six birdkids, Anne tucked Nudge in at night, told her stories, kissed her forehead... like a real mom. ;; Theeeeen, she turned out to be the bad guy boss and totally betrayed them. Figures. :( Thanks for all the added trust issues, Anne.
- Dr. ter Borscht: Stupid weird German scientist. >/ He thinks that Nudge is useless and defective. She would love to show him defective.
- Dylan: A new birdkid??? The plot thickens??? Nudge really doesn't know what to think of Dylan. He seems nice enough, and he has similar origins. (Although, he was cloned from a boy who died and is technically only 8 months old, though he looks to be Max's age.) As for him potentially joining the Flock... ehh. It feels weird. He's nice, but he's not family.
paradisa

friends
Edit
- Galadriel: A pretty elfen queen lady who is very wise and very nice and very good to talk to. She found out about Nudge's feathery secret from day one, and has been good enough not to tell anyone. Nudge feels somehow that she can trust her, which is nice, in a place like Paradisa. And gosh she's just so pretty!! Nudge may or may not be deeply infatuated with the idea of dressing her up in swanky modern clothes.
- Dex: Dextera is a nice mute guy who comes from a seeeeriously troubling world or something. They first met when Dex was on a loss, and she helped him as best as she could. They talk from time to time, and she's begun to consider him as a friend. Something about him makes her so sad, and she just wants to... explain all of the things to him! He doesn't know about the wings yet (he saw them, but just as part of a Halloween costume) but she would consider telling him.
- Kitty: Kitty is great! They first met and bonded a bit over the mutant thing (Nudge was super excited to meet someone who considered herself a mutant) and shared a bit about their experiences as mutants in their home worlds. Nudge has been training a bit with the X-Men. More than any of that, Kitty is just a sweet person to talk to, who doesn't seem to mind her rambling. It's nice to have a qurlfran in this place! *a* She also knows about the wings.
friendly
Edit
- Abel: BROSKI. A very silly priest who makes her laugh and is always kind and funny. (Except for that whole vampire thing. Creepy... but she forgave him.) All priests should be like Abel. For all his silliness, there is something about him that seemed very wise and very sad.
- Colette: Colette is just the sweetest girl. She's bubbly and cheerful and kind (except for that time she was a navy captain and wanted to capture them all... that kinda sucked but Nudge forgave her). SHE ALSO HAS WINGS. Is like an angel or something? So cool... Colette has all the makings of someone Nudge would like to put trust in. When they were trapped in Libet, a few kind words from her got Nudge to chin up. She already knows about the wings.
- Zoe: Zoe is a pretty lady... FROM OUTER SPACE. Whoa. Hearing about her world sorta made Nudge worry about what's going to happen to her own... but Zoe seems quite nice, and very dependable. She saved Nudge from the zombie townspeople hordes once, which was very cool of her.
- Ted: This architect guy?! Ted was her very first Paradisian encounter; she diiiidn't really believe anything he said at first, but is now on friendly terms with him. He seems like a good guy.
- Rin: One of the oldies up in this joint, as Nudge gathers! They've spoken a few times, and Rin always comes across as friendly and informative. A little while after arriving, Nudge introduced herself anonymously under the name 'Krystal', and offered her powers of clairsentience for something that Rin was working on.
- Geoffrey: The new guy in town?! He talked to her randomly one day in town and she showed him around and stuff. He's a writer and he's all mediaeval and stuff. He seems pretty cool; Nudge is willing to talk to anyone who calls her 'my lady'.
- Daine: Aha, Daine was one of the unfortunate (in Nudge's opinion) people to have Nudge explain Paradisa to her upon arrival. She did her best, though! Daine's a nice lady, who comes from one of those magic-filled worlds. She's also somehow in tune with animals or something? Which means that she knows stuff.
- Jr.: Curious! Jr. looks and sounds like a twelve year old kid, but the way he acts is decidedly adult. She likes him, if only for the fact that he seems to know how to take charge in a bad situation.
- Kate: A somewhat stern and tacit lady whom Nudge likes talking to from time to time. They met on the roof.
- Percy: He explained some stuff when Nudge first got here. He seems cool.
- John: An interesting kid that she's spoken to a couple times.
- Aradia: One of the troll people?? She comes across as really nice, if a bit confusing at times.
- Terezi: Another one of the trolls. She's blind, like Iggy! She seems okay but qurl... stop licking me.
- Dr. James: She first talked to this grumpy old man about languages! Haha, but no, he's interesting, and someone that she can see herself talking to more often. Maybe not too often, because doctors... :|
- Helen: This cool lady is going to help her on her quest to learn ALL OF THE LANGUAGES. Awesome.
- Mindy: Mindy is another girl her age that she'd like to get to know better. They met on Halloween and went trick-or-treating as a group.

- That Wolf Guy: Dude are you an Eraser...

Edit
- Sherlock Holmes: Nudge has no idea what he knows or what he thinks he knows, but what she does know is this: he's very smart, and he's way too curious. GO AWAY.

Edit
- Charlie: Lawd... all of the questions... all of the headaches...! Charlie is a guy that Nudge knew from her first time here. He is hard to put into words, because he makes her think, and he seems to always be thinking, himself. She didn't know whether to trust him, at first (and there was that whole vampire thing where he may or may not have tried to eat her and she may or may not have broken his kneecap before narrowly escaping lawd) but as they talked more, she became more friendly with him. At first she just wanted to keep an eye on him because he alone in Paradisa knows all of her secrets (the growing up in a cage and having several mutant powers thing) and she wanted to keep an eye on him. But she realises now that he is a really good guy. Strange, but a good guy. He's very closed off in some ways... and whoa dude are you allergic to straight answers... :| She will continue to pester him. Forever.
- Cain: FO' SHOSKI. Gosh, Cain was kind of great?? He was just as silly and kind and nice as Abel, his brother, and he was also one of the first people to find out that she had wings, when she went on a child loss. She has great memories of that week, because he treated her like a dauder and she treated him like a papa and ugh.......... he was very nice. She misses him. :(
- Amoretta: Was also made and not born? Nudge would have liked to know her better. She was so nice.
- Jade: Partner in crime. /brofist
- Sakura: Sakura was a FOUNT OF INFORMATION; seriously, Nudge learnt so much from her when she first arrived. She was also very kind in general.
- Tia Dalma: ofiusdflksf dude... this lady is nice but... has some weird powers or something.
- Yuki: Sorta weird. But cool. Nudge had nice conversations with her and baked cookies with her once. Her leaving was sad.
- Coraline: Coraline was one of the few girls her age that in the castle. Nudge was looking forward to getting to know her better; it's sad that she's gone.
- Krasus: Seems okay... but gives off distinctly Jeb-like vibes?! Wtf mate.
- Deathwing: Get out. Forever.
trivia
Edit
- Her real name is Monique; as part of her loss, she doesn't remember it. She loves making up hilariously complicated names for herself, though. Like, Jessica Miranda Alicia Tangerine Butterfly. And, like... Cinnamon Allspice La Fever. aosudoisuda dis girl... You'll notice that she's pretty obsessed with names.
- Will sleep forever if left alone.
- KICKS IN HER SLEEP. :>
- Used to read tons of car magazines in her spare time, and picked up a lot a lot of random, but useful stuff. Knows the ins and outs of vehicles like a pro. But don’t let her drive.
- Had a brief flirtation with vegetarianism after she saw hawks ripping into dead rats and other forest animals. But she got over that pretty quickly.
Unless James Patterson, you know, forgot that he made her a vegetarian. - She weighs like... nothing, seriously.
- Cannot spell to save her little winged butt. Give her a break; the only School she ever went to for a prolonged period of time was more interested in poking her with needles than actually teaching her anything. Thank God for the Internet, TV and books.
- Unless I say otherwise, EVERYTHING she does over the journal is dictated.
- Unless I say otherwise, she is always wearing a coat or a windbreaker or a jacket when outside of her room. Old habits die hard, and all.
- Because of her wings, it’s common belief that her avian DNA comes from a ferruginous hawk.
- Is hungry all the time. Seriously. Only the Gasman's bottomless pit of a stomach rivals hers. :)
- Afraid of rats. Like WHOA.
- Intensely claustrophobic.
- She will trust kids a hell of a lot faster than she'll trust adults.
- If you're willing to believe Dr. ter Borscht, it's possible that the experiments that she underwent at the School caused something to go wrong with her thought processes, explaining why she can't seem to control her mouth. Of course, it's also completely possible that she's just, you know, a talkative little girl.
Although, taking into account the scientists' track record when they experimented on Iggy and the Gasman... it's probably true, lol. ;; - She once touched the Wall, a Vietnam Memorial in Washington, and her clairsentience kicked in. The onslaught of emotions and visions and memories made her burst into tears, and she doubled over, almost collapsing. That's why I think touching the castle would probably be an instant K-O for her.
- Her clairsentience was programmed into her; the magnetic ability mutated on its own. And judging from the rest of the flock, they're all constantly mutating. Creepy. Cool, but creepy.
- If birdkids are anything like the rest of the experiments that come from the School, presumably, one day an expiration date will appear on the back of her neck. And on that day, she will simply expire, and drop dead. Suck. ):
