Raine Sage

It's ironic. My human blood spurs my intellectual curiosity, and my elven blood provides me with the years I need to satisfy it. It's almost as if I'm acknowledging being happy that I was born a half-elf.

PetsEdit

Medafil the griffon. Isn't he cute?

Raine seems to acquire a lot of pets in Paradisa. She has a depowered female Delcatty named Jasra from the Pokemon plot, and she has adopted a young male griffon named Medafil from Koh, a resident who left. On Christmas of '09, her Quagsire plushie came to life as a gift from the castle, so he is a fully powered Pokemon (albeit a very dumb one). She keeps him in a Pokeball. She's also watching a Growlithe nicknamed Detective for Rose Tyler, as Rose has a lot of other pets.

When Yuuri and Lloyd left at the end of January '10, Raine took it upon herself to care for the eyeless buffalo they had brought back to the castle from the World Beyond. It's a female specimen named Allen Jr. that lives in the stables. Not long afterward, she took care of a baby shirshu and a mature mongoose-dragon left behind from Jun's departure. It's quite the menagerie.

ItemsEdit

Raine picked up a transistor radio from the Lost Room.

She also keeps samples or souvenirs from every expedition or world change they've been on. She has several brochures from Los Angeles, a Pokedex, a US History book from the Wild West, a rock chip from the Tower beyond the first barrier, and samples of the red flakes on the grass with the eyeless buffalo, several flowers from beyond the spider swamp, fruit samples and saplings of the energy fruit in the spider swamp, and some samples of herbs and medicines that Doctor Fog had in his house.

LossesEdit

PermanentEdit

Raine has lost all memory of her brother, Genis, and her relationship with him.

TemporaryEdit

February '09: Raine was temporarily given the body of Korean popstar Rain for a week, which involved being both human and male, and destroying a DDR machine. Later, she got hit by an arrow during the Valentine's Day miniplot and confessed her love to Sam Uley. Then she was turned into a crazy Marker-worshiper during the Dead Space plot. This was not a fun month for her!

February '10: Raine goes on an AU loss making her believe she was a member of the Renegades, rather than a small-town schoolteacher. Few people notice the difference, though; Renegades are skilled at cover-ups.

PersonalityEdit

Raine is logical more than emotional and tends to point out the most unpleasant consequences of a decision - but then, she is a teacher, and she wants her friends to choose based off more than gut instinct. She can often be found with a book about history, technology, or anything else explaining what makes the world the way it is. She's harsh on her students because she has high expectations, but she truly cares for them and wants them to become the best they possibly can.

The other side of her personality is seen as a 180 degree shift by everyone except herself (she regards it as a natural extension, of course). Around ruins, her inner archaeologist comes out and Raine becomes excited and starts loudly going into obscure details about the site, the materials, and anything else that pops into her head. It's the one time she seems to lose all her inhibitions. Her friends call this "Ruin Mode". Occasionally, she will enter "Ruin Mode" about other research subjects as well.

HistoryEdit

Raine was born to an elf woman and a human man in the village of Heimdall. Unfortunately for her, the new Pope did not take kindly to one of his Holy Guard fathering a half-elf, and Raine's clear intellectual prowess led to her being hounded most of her life by the Imperial Research Academy. When Raine was eleven and her mother gave birth to another half-elf child, she sent them on a one-way trip through the Otherworldly Gate to Sylvarant in hopes that they would be able to live a better life.

Of course, Sylvarant's racism wasn't a whole lot better. Raine and her baby brother Genis wandered around for five or six years until Raine managed to get the teacher's job in Iselia. She taught there for many years before departing with Colette on the journey of world regeneration. Many things happened during this journey, and in the end the two worlds were united. Raine and Genis decided to become half-elf ambassadors and try to spread tolerance and unity.

Then, about two years after the worlds were reunited, Raine traveled with Emil on his quest to awaken Ratatosk. She was about to depart with him on another visit to the Otherworldly gate when she woke up in Paradisa instead of Altamira....

AbilitiesEdit

Raine is a healer, plain and simple. She has a few somewhat powerful Light-magic techniques of varying intensity, but her main focus (besides her intellectual pursuits) is on the healing arts. She possesses a powerful artifact, the Unicorn's Horn, that she can use to bring people back from the edge of death, purify corrupting influences (in the game, she uses it to return sanity to one character and human form to another), and enhance her already potent magic. However, these techniques work best on people who are already "magical" (either through enhancement with an Exsphere-like object, or by their nature). She cannot do much more than stabilize people who are innately non-magical, such as ordinary humans.

She also has a fair command of light-based magic. She knows techniques of various power that are all targetted-area attacks (i.e., they affect targets within about a ten-foot radius, give or take a bit). Lastle, Raine knows various buff-type spells that can temporarily increase her allies' abilities.

She's a fair hand at whacking people with a staff, but physical combat is far from a specialty of hers.
Raine will not hesitate to kick, throw, or otherwise beat up on people who she perceives as a danger to ruins. This seems to be more of a gut reaction than anything else.

RelationshipsEdit

CanonEdit

Genis: Her brother, whom she has forgotten as a price for entering Paradisa, is often the only one who can keep up with her more esoteric theories. He's brilliant for a 14-year-old, and Raine tends to show her affection for him in not-so-obvious ways. He came to Paradisa briefly, and she was a bit surprised (as she was expecting someone older).
Lloyd: A student and hero. Raine respects Lloyd's integrity and idealism, though she often feels the need to provide a more realistic point of view. She is highly disappointed in his inability to perform even simple homework assignments, however.
Regal: A good friend and fellow responsible adult. She gave him a "love letter" once...or did she?
Sheena: Raine regards her as a bit foolish, but she's fond of Sheena and admires her devotion and courage.
Presea: Although they don't speak to each other much, Raine is one of the few who seems to actually understand that Presea is closer to 30 than 14, her physical age.
Zelos: Raine mostly ignores Zelos's outlandish behavior and pays attention to him when he's being serious. She showed her trust in him when she assigned Zelos to take over teaching math during the first journey, but he's still somewhat, well, wilder than Raine likes.
Kratos: A friend that she thought she'd never see again. He was a rare person who agreed with her logical, sometimes pessimistic views and she respects the difficult decision he made to guide Derris-Kharlan through space. She was sad to see him leave Paradisa.
Emil: A mystery wrapped inside an enigma. Raine has come to believe in Emil and thinks that he can bring the change the world needs, but is still slightly concerned about Ratatosk's influence. Still, she's heard that everything ends well where he is concerned - which is a great relief.
Alice: Doesn't disagree with Marta's assessment that Alice is a sadist.
Richter Abend: Doing the wrong things for the wrong reason, Richter. Raine wants to beat some sense into him.
Decus: She's willing to believe that he was being controlled, much like Brute was, but she's also aware that he's a very dangerous person.
Mithos Yggdrasill: Ah ha ha can we stress enough that she does not trust him? She found his interest in her rather unsettling when they first met, and is not someone who is likely to forgive betrayal. Even if he's the Mithos from the Ancient War, she knows that he's fully capable of being a sociopath.

ParadisaEdit

Colette:Another student and the Chosen of Regeneration. She's optimistic to the point of folly, but a kinder person cannot be found anywhere.
Yuan: A good friend and someone she's come to rely upon in Paradisa, if only because he can be trusted to be consistent. Although he tends toward the paranoid side, this is not without basis. Moreover, he's very experienced in dealing with crisis situations - always a valuable skill in an ally.

Albus Dumbledore: Albus is one of Raine's favorite people in Paradisa. Although his decisions may be colored by inexperience, Raine has complete confidence that Albus will live to become the great Headmaster his students remember.
Crowley: Someone she enjoys watching over the journal, as he's always involved in something interesting.
Billy: An interesting young man. He seems to have a good heart, but lacks confidence.
Django: A young man with a troubled past and a close connection to the powers of the Sun. He's also been here longest of anyone in a continuous streak, and as such is a valuable research companion! She was quite fond of his sunflower mentor, as well.
The Doctor: Raine is intrigued by all the Doctors, but this one in particular is the one she's had experience with. They traveled to the Pillar Fields together and unlocked a change in the Dead Zone. SHe finds him intelligent and eager, a combination she can hardly argue with.
Ino: Once a close friend, Raine hasn't spoken much to Ino at all since Vergil's departure.
Jack Hodgins: Always has an experiment or two running, and a good sense of humor as well.
Jack Skellington: Oh, she likes him. So refreshing to be around!
Ken: He's smart and nice and polite, and Raine just adores him. She wishes she had more students like Ken!
Rin: Another friend and good reason to live on the eleventh floor. Raine enjoys Rin's curiosity and learning about her culture, which seems very similar to Sheena's.
Teddy: Despite a little awkwardness when Raine met Teddy during her male loss, she's grown quite fond of the young man and tries to keep a protective eye on him.
Wybie: School cannot be that bad, can it? Still, he's inventive and inquisitive...Raine puts his lack of enthusiasm about school down to bad teachers.

GoneEdit

Azrael: ...Yes, she actually misses him. Try not to read too much into that.
Gellert Grindelwald: Albus's evil ex-boyfriend A mage from Albus's world who seemed more drawn to the dark side of things than to the light. Raine keept an eye on him.
Jet: Raine rather liked Jet. They met in the library; while he certainly didn't seem like the scholarly type, he was dedicated to studying there anyway, which impressed her. He also proved himself useful in hairy situations, although he did seem to be less than punctual.
Jun: Someone else who's interested in monsters! They met during the Pokemon plot. Jun doesn't mince words, but she seems to have a lot of insight. One of Raine's best friends in the castle, and certainly one of the most sensible.
Lelouch: Recommended some good books to her; seems to be an intelligent fellow. Would that her students could be more like him.
Lezard Valeth: Intriguing and intelligent. She was very curious about him, especially after the arrival of Lenneth Valkyrie, but she never got the opportunity to confirm her suspicions. Also, she pegged him as a necromancer almost immediately.
Kari: A sweet girl who liked to take pictures of everything.
Raidou Kuzunoha the 14th: A detective and Devil Summoner who Raine took under her wing. Despite an attempt on her life during a loss, Raidou was polite, trustworthy, and commanded great power. Raine liked him.
River Song: A fellow archaeology professor from a place of high technology. How awesome is that?
Santos: Found him in his room bleeding to death and managed to get him safely to the clinic. Raine became rather fond of him, but suspects he was not so lucky upon his return.
Sam Uley: Now this one she liked. He helped out quite a bit during Jasper's loss and the succeeding vampire attacks, and he seems like a smart and responsible individual. And his wolf form reminded her of Noishe. She accidentally confessed her undying love for him during Valentine's after getting hit with Pit's arrow. Oops.
Vergil: ...Vergil. Raine was never entirely able to straighten out her feelings for Vergil. He was one of the first friends she made in Paradisa, as he initially mistook her for Lady because of her voice. He was always serious and gave thoughtful replies to her inquiries, and he proposed marriage to her during a castlewide plot once. Upon his return, he seemed to have reverted to a mindset of power-seeking, and this change depressed Raine rather a lot. Still, she careed more for him than she likely should have.
Yuuri: Along with Lloyd, Yuuri brought back a young eyeless buffalo specimen from the journey of exploration in spring '09. Raine commends his dedication to zoology! And he seemed a kind boy, as well.
