Journal: recordhistory.
Canon: Post-chapter 168.
Room: 1516 (Pietas Tower), but currently staying in 506.

Loss: His photographic memory. In Paradisa, Lavi will no longer have the ability to memorize and recall every detail of anything he's seen even only once. It won't be possible for him to memorize/recall anything at an above average level anymore, so he'll need to get used to forgetting things and work around it.

Birthday: August 10th.
Height: 179 cm.

Appearance: Lavi's right eye is always covered by an eyepatch, but he's not hiding an empty eye socket or other injury underneath it (why he wears it is still unknown, but it supposedly has something to do with being/becoming a bookman). Lavi usually wears a headband-thing, either around his head or at times his neck. He has a replacement for his old one now, with a new pattern on it. He also wears an earring in each ear and seems to wear jewellery-ish accessories in general (necklaces, arm... things, rings and chains). Most of the time, Lavi wears a scarf as well.
Occupation: Exorcist and bookman-in-training. Also works at The Pie Hole here.
Sexuality: KNOWLEDGESEXUAL? Heterosexual, but isn't about to look for any relationships.

Anti-Akuma WeaponEdit

Lavi's anti-Akuma weapon is a hammer whose size and length Lavi can change at will, once he has activated it, by commanding it to grow or extend. Extending its handle can provide a useful way to travel from one spot to another and the hammer head can easily smash through buildings (although it's generally intended for smashing Akuma). Its weight doesn't affect Lavi, since he is the weapon's conformer. When not activated, the hammer is small enough to fit into a holster usually strapped to Lavi's leg. Lavi's hammer was broken for a while, after shattering inside the Ark, but was eventually fixed.

A second level of activation allows Lavi to use a few different element-based attacks, such as a fire attack or a lightning one or both combined, which he can adjust in strength as necessary. He can also temporarily influence objects in nature (e.g. clouds). These attacks are all called forth by Lavi speaking a corresponding phrase.

Apparently Lavi doesn't like his hammer's actual name, so he decided to give it a nickname instead.

PersonalityEdit

BasicEdit

  • Acts casual around and friendly towards most people.
  • But he has said to Allen not long after they met that he doesn't let down his guard - someone you meet on one day could be an Akuma the next, at least in their world.
  • Will tease people who are fun to bug, in a harmless and not intended to be malicious way.
  • Will also be nosy if someone seems to be up to something interesting to look into.
  • Ruins serious moments with inappropriate remarks at times, but is supportive at other times, too. (... Unless he's being serious or angsty himself.) Both are probably intended to have a similar effect and cheer up or distract the other person.
  • Keeps his internal conflict to do with being Bookman's successor but no longer being able to view his friends as nothing more than trails of ink on paper to himself.
  • Can get pretty angry, other than more comical getting frustrated or annoyed. So far, this has only really happened when he was worried about Lenalee and Allen or defending Lenalee and probably had to realize that he was slipping as an impartial onlooker.

In-depthEdit

Lavi usually comes across as a friendly, generally cheerful sort of guy and someone who likes joking around and teasing people. Not that nothing fazes him or he never loses his temper, though - there are times when he'll bicker with Allen or talk back at Bookman, for example, or get vocally angry in more serious situations to the point of yelling at people and even smashing a window once.

But in reality, appearing friendly and sociable is what Lavi deliberately chose to make part of his personas, for the sake of being able to gain people's trust more quickly and easily wherever his travels with Bookman took him next, presumably aiding them in gaining the information they needed to observe and record. At the same time, he always had to keep in mind that he was only an onlooker wherever he went and ready to set out again as soon as their current job was done. Prior to their joining the Black Order, that wasn't a problem, as he and Bookman hadn't stayed in one place that long before. Lavi had also begun his training at a young age, willingly discarding his real name back then and deciding that he'd become a bookman because it meant learning things that no one else knew. (He continues to be curious, even nosy later when something interesting seems to be going on - in one scene, Lavi is described as being like a "dog with a bone sometimes".)

As two years in the Order passed, however, Lavi gradually began to change. Viewing countless battles had led him to see humans as stupid, constantly at war and failing to end that, and himself as different from them, but this time he and Bookman were soldiers themselves, working with the Order to record the war between the Exorcists and the Millennium Earl's forces from that position. Although at first he had no trouble thinking to himself that it was already a lost battle for the Order's side and that the Order's struggle would probably be excluded from ordinary common-knowledge history one day as well, while keeping up his friendly act around the others, over time he reached a point where he no longer knew whether he was still just feigning his smiles and where remaining a detached, unbiased observer wasn't working out too well anymore. The fate of the people he didn't set out to see as comrades does affect him now and so does the idea of leaving them behind someday. But, while he came to start questioning why Bookmen exist, he doesn't forget that he and Bookman are with the Order as record-keepers.

RelationshipsEdit

Under serious construction.

D.Gray-man charactersEdit

Black OrderEdit

  • Allen Walker: Lavi first met Allen after Allen and Lenalee's Rewinding Town mission. They get along pretty well, Lavi possibly treating Allen a little like a younger brother at times as well as a friend. He teases him and has scribbled on his face and they occasionally argue without being too serious - elbowing each other and pulling on each other's faces might happen - but Lavi shows concern for him and reactions that aren't very unbiased, too. Allen is also the host to the fourteenth Noah's memories, as well as considered to be the "Destroyer of Time" in a prophecy, and his Innocence has exhibited another instance of saving its user by itself - something that hadn't been heard of before it happened to him and Lenalee.
  • Arystar Krory: Called Krorykins by Lavi.
  • Bookman: Teacher/mentor, strangely obsessed with his hair at times. Lavi calls him old man/gramps and sometimes panda or panda-faced old man and things to that effect. Bookman occasionally smacks him or kicks him in the face for being disrespectful. They have moments of more serious interaction together when others aren't watching and they're discussing information they need to keep to themselves.
  • Cross Marian: One of the remaining Exorcist generals, Allen's master. Probably knows other important things, in addition to that 14th information.
  • Doug: Was a young Finder. Might have been naive and too easily moved, but was observant in spite of that, even seeing through Lavi when they first met.
  • Kanda Yuu: Teasing Kanda caused Lavi to need Lenalee coming to his rescue not long after he and Bookman had joined the Order. In spite of that and threats from Kanda when his first name is used to address him, Lavi does just that, even telling Allen to do it, too. But they do seem to get along as actual friends, in a way.
  • Komui Lee: Lenalee's older brother and Black Order Chief. Also builds robots, comes up with other science and technology stuff, some of it helpful and some of it less so, and overprotects Lenalee from perverts/any guy that gets near her.
  • Lenalee Lee: Lenalee stepped in to save Lavi from Kanda's wrath at one point shortly after his joining the Order. Has used her love punch on Lavi. Lenalee is definitely one of the people Lavi has come to care about, especially judging by his reactions when she's in danger, and possibly one of the first. Even if he's yelled at her and made her cry before. Her Innocence has recently evolved from an equipment-type to a new form now named a crystal-type. It's also protected her of its own will before, saving her, which was an unusual phenomenon.
  • Miranda Lotto: A little (or more than a little) jumpy. But her abilities support fighting Exorcists, at least for as long as she can keep them up without running out of energy. In spite of those limits, she tries her best, even to the point of exhausting herself. Can go for a long time without sleep, though.

Millennium Earl and co.Edit

  • Rhode Kamelot: Has some creepy interest in Allen and a bad taste in "games".
  • The Millennium Earl: Trying to bring about the end of the world, leads the side the Black Order opposes in the war.
  • Tyki Mikk: Tried to kill Allen and destroy his Innocence, turned into some weird other form.
  • Wisely: Smashed Kanda's head in, can read minds.

In ParadisaEdit

- Treated like friendsEdit

  • Amane Misa: Knew Lavi from the first time he was in Paradisa, and apparently they knew each other well enough for her to know various things about him, including that Lavi isn't his real name. She told him she's good at keeping secrets, though.
  • Arthur Pendragon: Prince rather than King Arthur right now. Lavi first met him when Arthur was introduced to the swimming pool and they exchanged names then. Later Lavi helped find Arthur (on a body swap loss in Allen's body) when Rhode had him. Arthur is a lot more fun than Lavi had initially expected based on what he'd heard prior to actually meeting Arthur and talking to him more himself - he definitely gets sense of humour points for the spontaneous direct-answers-to-questions game, whether it was intentional or not, and his letter to the castle corrections.
  • Takamura Uru: A cheerful, friendly girl who cares a lot about her friends. Seemed easily scared by ghosts, but also sounds tougher than she looks. Comes from an ordinary world (but ahead of the nineteenth century), wishes she could fly.
  • Yamanaka Ino: A ninja with healing skills. Taught Lavi and Allen how to play truth or dare. She's someone who knows Lavi from the first time he was in Paradisa and filled him in on some things when he returned. Lavi also encountered her and Allen on a date shortly after arriving in Paradisa.

- Treated like acquaintances Lavi wants to get to know betterEdit

  • Django: Has been in Paradisa for over three years, knew Lavi from the first time Lavi was here.
  • Erica Hartmann: They spoke during the Jurassic Park plot and then introduced themselves on the journals later, when Hartmann had her Strikers.
  • Teresa: Great sense of humour. Lavi enjoys talking to her and thinks she sounds interesting. She seems pretty close to Allen, too, in a cool mother figure sort of way.

- Would be interested in talking to againEdit

  • Chie Satonaka: Met her in the library once, when she was looking up "Shadows" and "Personas".
  • Pharos: Not named after the Pharos of Alexandria. Seemed like an unusual kid - and it turns out that he's not a kid at all, but Death.
  • Reno: Knew Lavi the first time Lavi was in Paradisa, sounds like an interesting guy.
  • Roy 'Arsenal' Harper: This guy was found in the lab/house the expedition group came across the day after the Doctor Fog night. Apparently he knows Reno Browne and has been in Paradisa for some time.

- Other interactionEdit

  • Rose Tyler: Lavi met her while she was on a loss. She fell asleep mid-conversation with one of her glass slippers on the stairs.

FormerEdit

  • Aida Michiru: Made good cookies.
  • Alfred F. Jones (America):
  • Amiboshi: Lavi startled him on the ship on the way to the island during the Jurassic Park plot. He also startled him later when Amiboshi was playing his flute on the roof.
  • Azmaria Hendric: An Exorcist-in-training - from another world. Left and came back recently, then left again.
  • Carly Shay: A friendly girl who bid on Lavi in the Paradisa Bachelor Auction and won him for a date. It went pretty smoothly.
  • Casca:
  • Chrome Dokuro: Quiet sort of girl with an unusual name.
  • Daniella:
  • Decus: A guy who comes from a place where dragons are common (but smaller than dinosaurs). Waiting to hear the angelic voice of a girl named Alice again.
  • Delysia Lafosse (Sarah Grubb): A great singer and fun to talk to. Seems to prefer to keep her real name a secret.
  • Deneve: Not very talkative, from Teresa's world.
  • Elraine Figarette: Friendly-sounding girl.
  • Euphemia li Britannia:
  • Ford Prefect: Editor/field researcher for an interesting book called the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy".
  • Franca Dochley:
  • Galatea:
  • Ganta Igarashi:
  • Goliath: A gargoyle, friends with Bronx and Lexington.
  • Halloween (Mordred): A cursed puppet from a version of Earth where (surprisingly good-looking?) witches terrorize society, part of an organization that hunts those witches. Has a human form as well - Lavi hadn't expected it to be a girl. A skilled builder of snowmen. Left and came back.
  • Hassan Qasim:
  • Hellmaster Phibrizzo: Looks like a kid, is apparently a monster. Briefly encased Lavi in a crystal, which isn't an experience Lavi would like to repeat.
  • Hero Brown:
  • Horaki Hikari: Talked to her a bit at the bachelorette auction. Left and came back.
  • Huey Laforet:
  • Ikari Shinji: Pie kid, piloted a real giant robot.
  • Jet: Peace Patrol guy.
  • Joan Harris (née Holloway): Talked to her a bit at the bachelorette auction, too. Left and came back, and also swapped bodies with Arthur once. Was killed, from the sound of it, and hasn't come back yet.
  • Jun: Lavi worked on her farm during the Wild West plot. She's from a world that isn't Earth.
  • Kaworu Nagisa:
  • Lexington:
  • Lisette: Lavi gave her a tour shortly after she arrived.
  • Lita: Lavi introduced her to Paradisa when she arrived.
  • Lucille:
  • Lucy Heartphilia: Volunteered to help out with Allen's debt, but there was also some chaos in the city as a result. LAVI SHOULD HAVE DONE BACKGROUND CHECKS.
  • Matthew Williams (Canada): A guy named after a country. Interesting sounding kid!
  • Merlin: Not an old man. Lavi ran into him while Merlin was in the stocks because of Arthur.
  • Mizushima Takeru: A guy who signed up to help out with Allen's debt.
  • Mouse:
  • Nagi Kengamine: Nicknamed "Owl" for some reason, speaks with a mechanical sounding voice.
  • Neku Sakuraba: Allen's roommate during the NY plot. While on a loss, also a dragon Lavi ran into and had a talking-at-the-dragon conversation with.
  • Nia Teppelin: Lived in a place called "Kamina City". Humans in her world used to be forced to live underground.
  • Nill:
  • Nina Fortner:
  • Peter Kirkland (Sealand): "Sea-Senpai". Introduced Lavi to the internet. His teachings will never be forgotten.
  • Rikku: Talked to her at the bachelorette auction. A girl from a world named Spira. She's a member of a race of people called Al-Bhed, who have swirly eyes and specialize in "machina"/machines that operate on magic.
  • Rogue (Anna Marie): Lavi first spoke to her on the expedition to the Fog, after the plague doctor bird-man thing appeared in the night.
  • Ryou Bakura & Yami no Bakura: A friend of Uru's. Strange things tend to happen to him.
  • Shiba Kuukaku:
  • Shibuya Yuuri: He and Lavi first started speaking around the (2009) exploration trip preparations and have spoken over the journal and in person after that. He seems like a pretty nice kid, if a little odd, with that eyeless buffalo. Lavi wonders why he's so suspicious of the ghosts - it's interesting, since most people don't seem to be too worried after a while. Has healing abilities.
  • Shizuma Yuuho: Switched rooms with Lavi (211 and 1516).
  • Smellerbee:
  • Suoh Tamaki: Host Club guy, was pretty funny to talk to, left and came back.
  • Uzumaki Naruto: "Naruto-sama", according to Teresa. Good friend of Allen's, a ninja from the same place as Ino. He and Lavi had an interesting first meeting through the journals, with a conversation about Naruto being caught with his pants down. Doesn't have anything "weird somewhere down there".
  • Wanijima Akito/Agito: Akito and Agito act pretty different from each other and it sounds like there's more to them than what can be seen when looking at them. Akito seems to have ties to Rhode and at the moment Lavi is under the impression that Rhode gave Akito some false information that Akito then passed along to the Exorcists, unaware of the whole situation.
  • Wolfgang Grimmer: Introduced himself as Otto Neumayer.
  • Yukari Takeba: Agreed to look after Lavi's fish, Gilbert, while he was away on the expedition. He also played a game of twenty questions with her and guessed what she was thinking of. Is investigating a potentially strange death that took place in November.

NotesEdit

  • Akito gave him a fish for Christmas (2008) and Lavi decided to call it Gilbert, at Allen's suggestion/attempt to make a pun.
  • Lavi gives some people strange nicknames.
  • Lavi claims to be interested in Lenalee in an omake Q&A, as well as answer questions about his ideal type of girl there and has had an enthusiastic sparkling heart-eyed "STRIKE!" reaction and other similar ones towards pretty women AND AKUMA IN DISGUISE. But it's likely that the over the top stuff is deliberate acting in front of other people (but maybe at least superficial appreciation of beautiful women) for the most part and teasing Allen for his reaction. As getting attached to some people is still something relatively new for Lavi and not something he's supposed to be doing at all, actually falling in love wouldn't be allowed, either.
  • He and Bookman seem to know at least one other language aside from English.
  • Was hit by a stray bullet as a kid once and caused Bookman to lose hair by clinging to it while unconscious.
  • Lavi's room in the castle started out not being changed much from the default room and he hasn't put many personal belongings or pieces of furniture in it himself. He usually doesn't spend that much time in there outside of things like sleeping, showering and getting dressed, but when he is in there other than that, he only really needs a chair, a shelf and a desk/table himself and a couch when other people drop by for a visit. By now, however, he's received various gifts from people during his stay in Paradisa so far, so the different scarves and other wearable items are worn or kept in Lavi's closet and the books are on his shelf with Gilbert's fish tank and now the plushie dinosaur from Allen. Some gifts from friends' previous stays here (a necklace from Lenalee and an earring from Kanda) are kept in a box inside a drawer with any cards. Those pictures of Kanda that Ino gave him for Christmas (2009) are in there now, too, partly because they were a present from her, and partly because they're probably dangerous material to leave lying around or remember.
