The BackgroundEdit

Sam Winchester was born May 2, 1983 to John and Mary Winchester in Lawrence, Kansas. On November 2, 1983, when Sam was six months old, a demon named Azazel came into his room and bled into his mouth, dosing him with demon blood. When Mary disturbed them, Azazel killed her, pinning her body to the ceiling and then setting fire to the house. John pulled Sam out of his crib, placing Sam in his brother’s arms and told him to take Sam out of the house, starting the beginning of his brother’s protective streak for him. John took his boys out on the road with him as he taught them how to hunt the supernatural, looking to get revenge on the demon that killed his wife. Dean raised Sam, mostly, on his own, aside from the occasional parental influence by the people they were left with. John, however, was mostly absent, which fueled an adversarial relationship with Sam as he got older. That friction came to a head when Sam applied to and was accepted with a full ride to Stanford University in California and ended with John giving Sam an ultimatum, either college or his family. Sam chose college. Sam didn’t have contact with his family after that for three years. Along the way, he met and fell in love with Jessica Moore, a fellow student at Stanford, and as they got ready to start their senior year, Sam was thinking about proposing to her.

In October 2005, Sam had just finished celebrating getting a good score on his LSATs and his interview at Stanford Law School when Dean showed up at his front door, telling him that his father was missing on a hunting trip and Dean needed his help to find him. It took some convincing, but Sam eventually agreed to come along, provided that he was back in Palo Alto on time for his interview at the law school on Monday morning. They went, finished the job that John had started, but didn’t find their father. When they returned to Stanford, as Dean promised, Sam returned home and found Jessica pinned to the ceiling in the same way his mother had been, presumably killed by the same demon. The apartment was then lit on fire, and Dean returned in time to pull his brother out of the flames. Sam agreed to go back on the road with his father again, hoping to find his father as well as the demon that killed the woman he loved. As time went by, Sam started to have vivid visions of other children like him, children who had been visited by Azazel and dosed with demon blood, not that he knew what it was. When they finally managed to meet up with their father again, toward May of 2006, they found out he was possessed by Azazel, and he proceeded to turn on the two brothers, and he would have killed Dean if Sam hadn’t managed to get a hold of the Colt and shoot his father in the leg. That weakened the demon enough so that John could retake control of his body and he ordered Sam to kill him, so that the demon died and everything was ended. Sam couldn’t do it, however, and Azazel left John’s body, escaping into the night. Sam then managed to get everyone into the Impala to take them to the hospital, but on the way they were t-boned by a tractor trailer, causing even more damage to the already injured Winchesters.

Dean was placed on life support after the accident. Sam and John argued back and forth for a long time over what to do about the situation, and after John disappeared for a period of time, Dean suddenly woke up. John came back to them and told Sam to run for a cup of coffee, but when he returned, he found John dead on the floor of his hospital room. The brothers laid him to rest, before continuing to look for the demon that they believed was the cause of it. After a particularly volatile encounter with a hunter named Gordon Walker, Dean revealed that John had made him promise that if he couldn’t save Sam, he’d have to kill him. That sent Sam into a spiraling depression, and he forced Dean to promise him the same thing—that if Sam went darkside, Dean had to promise to kill him. In mid-2007, Sam was kidnapped by Azazel again, combining him with other children like him who had been dosed with demon blood, intending to have them kill each other and only one survive. In a vision Azazel revealed to him what happened the night his mother died and revealed to Sam that Mary had known who the demon was. Through process of elimination, Sam was one of the last kids standing, but that was by luck—he refused to kill any of his counterparts. When Jake turned on him, however, the fight resulted in Sam getting fatally stabbed, just as Dean arrived to get him. A few hours later he woke up, confused, and when his brother returned he told him that Bobby had fixed him, but Sam later found out that Dean had sold his soul.

Faced with his brother only having a year to live, Sam threw himself into whatever options he could find in order to try and get his brother out of it. On the way, a demon named Ruby wiggled her way in, trying to push Sam to do more in trying to save his brother. Sam resisted at first, trying to figure out a way that wasn’t giving in to what the demon wanted, but that wasn’t enough. When he finally gave in and told Ruby to tell him what to do, she told him it was too late. He didn’t have enough time to learn what he needed to learn, and Sam had no choice but to watch Dean die at the hands of the hellhounds. Lilith, now wearing Ruby’s meat suit, turned on him and tried to kill him as well, but it didn’t work. Before Sam could grab Ruby’s knife and kill her himself, Lilith disappeared out the air vents.

After his brother’s death, Sam sunk into a deep depression. He started drinking heavily and would throw himself at whatever crossroads demon he could find, but no one would take his deal. When Ruby returned from wherever she was and saved him from a demon that was trying to kill him, he didn’t know what to make if it at first, but then she offered him what he wanted more than anything—revenge on Lilith for killing his brother. He gave in and slowly started to learn what Ruby was willing to teach him, letting her in to both his life and his bed. When Dean was pulled out of Hell in September 2008, Sam was actively using his demon blood abilities, up until he got caught by his brother. After a particularly bad case and a rough conversation with his brother, Sam said he’d give up using the abilities. That lasted for a while, but as the seals continued to break and they ran out of time, Ruby managed to talk him into starting to use them again, this time upping the ante by drinking Ruby’s blood to make him stronger. His activities continued to put a bigger and bigger rift between him and his brother, coming to a head when Dean found out that his brother had developed an addiction to demon blood. He and Bobby locked Sam in the panic room, using it to hold Sam in while he detoxed, but Castiel intervened and let Sam go. Sam immediately went to find Ruby, who told him that Lilith was on the last and final seal, and he needed to stop her before she broke it. She got him the necessary power he needed in order to kill a demon of Lilith’s caliber, and after he had done so, Ruby broke the news to him that she had been working for Lucifer all along. Dean charged in at that point, ready to kill, and Sam held Ruby in place while Dean killed her with her own knife. Sam did his best to apologize to Dean, as the final seal started to open and Lucifer got ready to walk free.

After releasing Lucifer, Sam struggled a lot with whether or not he and Dean could trust him on the job. After having Dean openly state that he couldn’t trust Sam any more, and a close encounter with his own demon blood addiction, Sam took a break from the hunt in order to allow Dean to do what he needed to do to stop it without Sam being in the way. Lucifer took this opportunity to try and track Sam down and seduce him into saying yes to being his vessel. He took the form of Sam’s deceased girlfriend, Jessica, and tried to manipulate Sam that way, but Sam still said no, instead deciding to track down his brother again and fight this to see if he could redeem himself for what he’d done. At first Dean said no, still not sure if he could trust Sam, but later changed his mind, saying that the two of them were stronger together. They then tried tracking down the Colt, hoping that that would be a way to kill Lucifer and end the Apocalypse. They got a lead that took them to a demon named Crowley, who gave them the Colt back so long as they promised that they’d get the job done and kill Lucifer. The Colt didn’t work, however, and resulting in the loss of their two friends, Ellen and Jo Harvelle.

When Anna resurfaced after being held prisoner in Heaven, she went back in time to kill Sam and Dean’s parents and make it so they’d never been born. Sam and Dean followed, and Sam got to meet his mother for the first time. He also somewhat apologized to John for the way he acted as a kid, even if John didn’t realize that he was in fact apologizing, or what he was apologizing for. When Anna actually attacked, she stabbed Sam in the stomach with a pipe, and was killed. He was later revived by the archangel Michael, and placed back in his own time period. Shortly afterwards, Sam did battle with his demon blood addiction again when they faced Famine. He gave in and drank two demons dry, but he later used those abilities to kill Famine, sending a handful of demon souls back to Hell by ripping them out of the Horseman’s body. A few weeks later, he was killed again by hunters looking to kill the person who let Lucifer out in the first place, and he and Dean were both sent to Heaven. Their relationship was further damaged by the pieces of Sam’s Heaven that were all times when he left his family and Dean paid the price for it. They found out that God wasn’t going to help them, and then were sent back to Earth in order to relay that message to Castiel. Things went from bad to worse after they defeated the Whore of Babylon, and Dean left both Castiel and his brother to go say yes to Michael. Sam did the best he could to stop him, but in the end it was Sam’s trust that did the trick, taking Dean directly to Zachariah in order to save their recently resurrected brother, Adam, and trusting him to do the right thing.

After killing Zachariah and escaping, Sam and Dean watched as Lucifer massacred a group of pagan gods, as well as the archangel Gabriel, known to him earlier on as the Trickster. Gabriel left them a message afterwards, telling them that the key to putting Lucifer back in his cage were the rings of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse. They then set out to collect the rings of Pestilence and Death, during which Sam found out how much of his life really had been manipulated by Azazel and other demons. He then realized that the only way to get Lucifer back in his cage was for him to say yes, and then hold him down long enough for Sam to jump back into the cage that was holding him. At first Dean was against the idea, but he later came around. Sam then made Dean promise him that he would get out of the business, go to Indiana, and live a normal life—not try and get his brother out of the cage. Dean was reluctant, but made the promise. When Sam finally said yes, at first he couldn’t get a handle on Lucifer and wound up giving the angel full control of his body. He watched as Lucifer killed Castiel and Bobby, and turning on Dean, before Sam managed to regain control and hold Lucifer down. He then used the rings to open the doors to the cage and throw himself in, dragging Michael with him when the archangel tried to stop him.

PeopleEdit

  • Dean Winchester - His brother. The most important person in his life. Screw with him, and Sammy's not happy.
  • John Winchester - His father. Was here for a while which was good because Sam missed him, but now is gone and Sam just misses him again.
  • Mary Campbell - His mother. He had never gotten the chance to meet her when he was a kid, but got the chance to spend some time with her in the castle which was ... awesome, though she has since gone home.
  • Bobby Singer - His other father. Bobby has done a whole lot more for him than he would ever say, and he's really happy that he's here in the castle.
  • Ruby - They were together here in the castle for a while and have an extremely complicated relationship, mostly because she sold him out back home. She left and them came back, and ... he's not dealing with it well, to say the least. Her loss is the plan she was involved in to screw him over and he doesn't know how to handle that.
  • Joanna Beth 'Jo' Harvelle - He and Jo have gotten a lot closer since she first arrived in the castle, almost close to relationship status, but he cares about her a lot and would do pretty much anything for her.
  • Castiel - His brother's angel. Ahead of him timeline wise. Generally has his back for the most part.
  • Bela Talbot - She shot him. Then screwed them over a bunch of times. He doesn't like her much.
  • Chuck Shurley - His prophet. Chuck watches their lives back home through a series of visions and turns them into books for his own profit. Sam and Dean have both threatened him to not continue. At all. Or else there will be death.
  • Elle Bishop - Met her after she came back the second time, bonded over their sordid family history. Probably tells her way more than he should, but he likes talking to her and he likes having her as a friend. Was handcuffed to her for a day during the March Madness plot. Also kind of tortured her when he was on an evil loss, but now they're getting back to being friends. Has since gone home.
  • Claire Bennet - Was friends with the last him, and apparently the him before that. Had sort of failed as trying to be friends with her again, but now he's getting a bit better at it, and then he had to go and torture her. They're still working on it, though. Slowly but surely. Then she left and came back and now he's trying to make friends with her again.
  • Anthony J. Crowley - Sam considers Crowley one of his closest friends in the castle, believe it or not. He's not exactly sure why, but he finds it comforting to know someone from another world who stood up to the devil and managed to stop an Apocalypse of the same caliber of his own. It means there's a lot he doesn't have to explain, less secrets, and less hedging around the bad things that Sam has done, because he knows that Crowley's a demon, and won't seriously judge him for it. That, and he's been in Sam's body, so that threw a lot of the awkward uncomfortableness that Sam has around people out the window. Also, he likes this Crowley a lot better than his world's Crowley. This Crowley is way less of a douchebag.
  • Mohinder Suresh - They just recently started talking about the badness in their various worlds. Sam likes talking to him -- he's an interesting conversationalist.
  • Rose Tyler - Her boyfriend went home around the same time Ruby did, so they started bonding over that. They were also on a kid loss together, so that made things interesting.
  • Lois Lane - Sam likes Lois a lot. He admires the fact that she's trying to find a way out, even though he knows that it's not going to happen, and he likes her spunk. And Dean seems to like her too, so he's glad that his brother is making friends outside of people he already knows. He just hopes that the two of them don't get each other into too much trouble.
  • Jilly Coppercorn - Sam likes Jilly. He hasn't really seen her much since the Beserk plot, but he likes her a lot. He thinks that for someone who doesn't deal with a lot of monsters on a regular basis, she handled herself pretty well.
  • Kaylee Frye - Sam also really likes Kaylee a lot. He thinks she's really sweet, and he doesn't have enough real friends in the castle, mostly associates? So spending time with her has been good for him as he learns how to be a normal person again.

Pets and ItemsEdit

  • Laptop - Gift from the castle for Christmas. He won't deny that he had missed it.
  • Alice - his puppy. Dean's got a matching one named Cooper. Yes, Alice Cooper. Sam can't help it, this him didn't name him.
  • Cooper - Dean's dog. Is taking care of him while Dean is out of the castle.
