With the surname of Windrunner, it is safe to say that Sylvanas is a woman that can boast skill and proficiency in both battle and calculating strategy. The upbringing of elite nobility still courses through her veins despite her undeath and choice of faction that opposes those she had so vigorously fought for. Though she may very well be seen as an enemy to her former people, the cunning and shrewd Sylvanas has negotiated a place within the might of the Horde out of sheer convenience, knowing all too well that her forsaken people would live up to their names as far as the Alliance is concerned.
Since she is one to make allies out of enemies and work with very little at hand, the former Ranger General-- now turned Banshee Queen and Dark Lady-- is more than confident in her new found power and standing within the social hierarchy of Azeroth. Perhaps those of the Horde know of her relentless nature on the battlefield as well as her merciless vengeance against those who stand in her way. Serious and collected with a hint of disdain for the fate she had been given, Sylvanas often finds herself thinking about nothing other than seeking revenge against Arthas Menethil, the Lich King, the one that took her life as a high elf and desecrated her very essence and soul into a mindless banshee for his own gain. Even as his servant, Sylvanas never fully gave in, thinking such acts cowardly, unforgivable, and disgusting, eventually plotting a coup against her captor.
After years of defying his might amongst her subjects and others, leading expeditions against the Lich King's domain at Icecrown Citadel, both the Horde and the Alliance have since been successful, leaving Sylvanas to find a new undertaking while still a "living" shell of her former self.

"Before the coming of the plague, Sylvanas Windrunner was the brave Ranger-General of Silvermoon.
During the Third War, Prince Arthas invaded the elven kingdom of Quel'Thalas. Sylvanas led her forces
in a desperate struggle against the undead Scourge, but Arthas eventually defeated the high elves and
transformed Sylvanas into one of his banshee slaves.
Cursed to mindless undeath, Sylvanas only regained her will when the Lich King's powers waned.
Eventually she outwitted the Scourge and broke away with her rebel faction, which she came to be known
as the Forsaken. Now she rules over the Forsaken from the Undercity of Lordaeron. Her goal is to take
vengeance upon Arthas one day and find lasting freedom for her cursed people."

They describe the events from the Third War, the very war in which Sylvanas lost her life, beginning her new life as a queen of the banshees, moving on to the leader of the rebel undead. More excerpts from other books will come as I find them, but do read them, they are pretty entertaining, even if you don't know the universe at hand.
• Arthas intends on ravaging the Sunwell, watched over by the high elves for his own purpose, Sylvanas rallies her people to fight pff the death knight and his forces of the undead. Though she is very confident in her own forces, Sylvanas finds that her people are outpowered for the time being, and forces her troops to retreat, barring Arthas with an elfgate, since there is no way he can find the key needed to unlock the way to the Sunwell. Or is there?
• Betrayed by one of their own, the high elves are shocked that Arthas has broken through to their homeland. Sylvanas urges her people to flee as she makes the effort to hold off Arthas forces herself, knowing all too well that they are breaking through. She prepares for the final battle, drawing blade against Arthas' deadly Frostmourne. She is defeated... and Arthas is victorious, torturing her to her miserable undeath, and her subsequent servitude under his cold, iron fist.
• Sylvanas lives her days of death as a banshee under Arthas' command, still intent on retaining what she once was, despite everything. She watches as Arthas flaunts his power and accomplishments related to the Scourge, much to the bane of the vicious Dreadlords. He makes quick enemies out of these demons, the same demons that ask Sylvanas for assistance in putting Arthas in his place. She would opt to do such things on her own terms, however...
• And so the plan is set in motion, Sylvanas and her banshees working quickly to trap Arthas by their own means. As the voice of the Lich King weakens throughout his entire forces, lessening his hold on them, Sylvanas is free to make her move against Arthas. With her body reclaimed and poison arrow in tow, she fires an arrow to the death knight, intent on torturing him to death as he did her. Things do not go the way Sylvanas intends, but she and her rebel undead are free to escape, to become the future Forsaken.
• After all this goes down, having alchemy experiments concocted for her sake is essentially what Sylvanas is up to these days. I presume this "modern" glimpse into her life takes place before the events concerning the Wrathgate and the Battle for Undercity, however.
