The Midnighter
I, on the other hand, hate you.
Do you understand? I hate you. I want to torture you. I want to leave doctors puzzling for years over how I've done the things I want to do to you. My mild-mannered colleague will not interfere. Your life as a bipedal vertebrate is over."

background
Edit
The Midnighter's memory only goes back the past fifteen years or so. He remembers nothing about his identity, his real name, his childhood, where he grew up, or anything about his life before Bendix. It's been suggested that he can recall certain details (for example, he once quotes something that his father said, and he mentions contacting an 'old lover' in the White House) but the overall picture is one big blur. It's also been implied that he's spent some time in the army and the special forces in his time before Bendix; it's where he gets some of his combat skills, his aptitude for stealth, and all his gross, extensive knowledge on torture. Wheeze...
Sometime in his early twenties, he was either recruited into, forced to join, or volunteered for Henry Bendix's secret team, Stormwatch Zero. He, Apollo, and the other five members of their team were fitted with their implants, made into superhumans. From the moment they donned their costumes and spoke their code-names, their identities were erased. They would work as Henry Bendix's secret arm in Stormwatch, working when and where the main team couldn't, to make the world a better place.
Their first mission, however, was a setup. Bendix sent them on an impossible mission to steal extremely dangerous technology. The team was destroyed despite all their powers, with only the Midnighter and Apollo making it out alive. Their transportation devices had been rigged so that they couldn't make it back to the base without the stolen property. With nowhere to go, the Midnighter and Apollo ran, going underground. They knew Bendix would be looking for them, to finish the job. They eked out a simple existence from the shadows, resurfacing only to help people where they could, to stamp out crime and wrongdoing, determined to somehow make a finer world. Somewhere along the way, they fell in love.
Five years later, they learnt from Jackson King and Christine Trelane in the new Stormwatch that Bendix was dead. They could finally stop hiding, finally have something like a life. The peace didn't last for long, however. A little while after that, Jenny Sparks approached them with the idea of joining the Authority; a new group of superheroes determined to change the world. They accepted.
The years after that include saving the world a bucketload of times, fucking up a bucketload of times, world-jumping, losing Jenny Sparks, getting married, adopting a daughter, and a whole lot of ass-kicking.
See here for a more detailed rundown of his history.
personality
Edit
Equal parts cruel, stoic, ruthless, and sardonic, the Midnighter is a protector and a destroyer. These two qualities may seem to be at odds, but they are essential facets of the Midnighter. He sees it as his job to protect and look out for the common man, and also to terrorise and punish those that deserve it. He is extremely intelligent, strong, capable, has a firm resolve and takes his job protecting the innocents and the earth very seriously. Some would say too seriously. He was engineered to be the perfect killer, and that is what he is. In his mind, justice should be swift and unhesitating. Mercy is not part of his vocabulary. He is a self-proclaimed bastard, and proud of it.
It’s readily apparent that the Midnighter enjoys what he does, to the point of being a bit sadistic and vindictive. He welcomes violence and bloodshed, and loathes being inactive. If a few heads need to be cracked, then he is the first on the scene. He is certainly not above dirty tactics, torture and mentally psyching out his enemies to get the job done. Though not as powerful as all of his teammates, or other post-humans in his world, he is nevertheless known as the most dangerous man on the planet. He is a killing machine, but by no means one-dimensional; he displays as much cunning as he does strength.
Generally, his stoic and grumpy nature is laced with a healthy amount of wit and sarcasm. He can be a bit of a loner, and is often irritable. Unless you’re someone that he’s close with, it’s rare that you’ll see him with a genuine smile on his lips. He does make a lot of smart remarks, and is known for being sardonically cutting. When he’s smug, he’s smug.
He is stubborn and impatient almost to a fault, and not to mention intensely intimidating. His reputation and his abilities give him an edge in battle that he never hesitates to use. Despite this, it is important to him that he never loses sight of his new purpose in life, and within the Authority: to create a finer world for everyone to live in. Humanity annoys him, but he does care about it. Helping people is what he does, and it is what he always strives for, even though his methods may be morally ambiguous.

Added by Sahara StormThe Midnighter tends to focus on the job, to the extent that he'll completely immerse himself in a mission and avoid contact with anyone outside of the mission until it's over. Other than his family and few friends, it's pretty much all he has. He helps liberate small countries in his free time. At one point, he lost sight of the reason that he joined the Authority; for the PEOPLE. At that point, he tried living on Earth, amongst the regular citizens that he fights for, and though it was an experience that he enjoyed and needed on some levels, he knows that he can never assimilate completely. He therefore tries to strike a perfect balance. He walks among mankind, but he doesn't count himself as truly one of them.
Politically, he leans to the left, but after what happened when the Authority took over the American government, he prefers to stay firmly out of politics. It's the higher-ups, after all, who are most often at the head of whatever corruption that's affecting humankind. He's particularly ruthless when it comes to heads of government who've screwed up. He thinks that if you’ve assumed or been given responsibility, you need to live up to it.
Like most hardnoses, however, Midnighter does have a few soft spots. He is a devoted and loving husband. Apollo is the only one who comes close to understanding him, and controlling him, to some extent. Being a father has ‘aggravated his homicidal tendencies’, but it has also facilitated a lot of growth within him. He’ll never be a complete family man (even in his relationships with his husband and daughter, he emphasises his need for time alone), but Apollo and Jenny are the two most important people to him. He tends to go berserk if they are ever hurt or in danger. He has a huge soft spot for children, and enjoys spending time with his family.
abilities
Edit

Added by Sahara StormOnce upon a time, the Midnighter was a normal guy.
Then Henry fucking Bendix happened.
powers
Edit
Battle Precognition (Mental Induction): This ability is his power to predict how a battle will happen before it starts. His 'fight implants' include a 'combat computer' that allows him to run through a given combat situation millions of times in his mind, almost instantly covering nearly every possible result before the first punch is even thrown. He uses this information to predict the actions and or reactions of his foes, counteracting their moves almost before they even think to make them. According to Midnighter, his powers also work by letting him see the outcome of the battle he wants, and working backwards, following the right steps to get there.
Tactical Senses: Midnighter's senses allow him to detect any modifications or powers in anyone he looks at, as well as how they work, so he can defeat them. He can detect what special abilities a opponent has, he can see the enhancements, and he can see weaknesses. He can detect the increased electrical activity in an opponent's brain.
- Telescopic Vision: Self-explanatory. Not on the level of Majestic-class post-humans like Apollo, but he has pretty excellent range.
- Thermal Vision: This is presumably how he sees people when the computer is ferreting out their abilities and weaknesses.
- Enhanced Hearing: He's able to directionally tune into exactly what he wants to hear. He can also hear pulses and heartbeats, and is an expert at using that to tell when people are lying.
Fight Implants: Midnighter's abilities were designed by Bendix to give him an all encompassing advantage in close-combat.
- Enhanced Strength: He has fibre-lined muscles, increasing his strength (he can dismember opponents with his bare hands and feet). It is NOT super-strength, but he is, nevertheless, very powerful.
- Enhanced Speed: Midnighter can move faster than the human (and even superhuman) eye in a quick speed burst, an effect perhaps created by his always possessing the element of surprise. He normally moves at slightly above human speed but can move so fast that enemies with super speed can't see him, though he can't stay at that speed for long.
- Enhanced Durability: He's shown to have a certain degree of invulnerability, and can fight non-stop for expansive periods of time.
- Enhanced Coordination: Midnighter's body has been altered to give him inhuman, gyroscopic balance. It's pretty hard to get him off his feet.
- Enhanced Reflexes: Midnighter's body has been altered to give him faster nerve endings so he can react quicker than any human and many superhumans.
Survival Implants: Implants used to keep him fighting in the worst of conditions.
- Pain Receptor Control: He can turn his pain receptors on and off so he can keep fighting when the pain would stop a normal man, and has implants that numb him to most pain - he has undergone major surgery while awake and alert. The pain is not totally cut off though, so his healing factor is also very helpful.
- Enhanced Healing: Though not on the level of more powerful characters, Midnighter does heal much faster than a normal human. He's fought with, and healed from, a broken neck, broken limbs, holes through his chest, having his whole body set on fire, contracting various viruses, and other things.
- Super-Enhanced Immune System: He defeated HIV in six weeks, and the common cold never stays in his system for more than a couple of minutes. After the Doctor overdosed himself with heroin, physicians used a shot of the Midnighter's blood to jump-start his system by deactivating his opiate receptors.
- Environmental Adaptation: He can survive in anaerobic environments for short periods of time
and possesses a secondary heart should the first one be rendered unusable. (LOSS) Midnighter can go without food or water for an undetermined (but undoubtedly long -- four months and more) amount of time. And no food and water means no need to go to the bathroom.
non-powered abilities
Edit
Weapons Master: He owns a lot of weapons, and he's an expert at using them all; the staff, knives, and throwing stars in particular. He's got guns, but seldom uses them. He's proficient in the use of several types of weaponry, including outdated ones.
Master of Stealth: Midnighter is also quite adept at stealth. He is known to only be seen when he wants to be seen.
Master Combatant: He is a close-quarters killer, having quite effortlessly slaughtered close to 30 super-powered soldiers by himself, without being so much as touched by them.
weaknesses
Edit
Psionics: A sufficiently powered psychic with at least some knowledge of his implants can shut down his mental enhancements, making his ability to calculate a fight null and void.
Nanite Infection: Midnighter is more susceptible to nanite infection due to his neural enhancements. On at least one occasion his mind and body has been controlled by nanties created to disrupt and control his neural enhancements.
Inactive Opponent: It was revealed that his ability can be defeated if his opponent does not make the first move (although this may have been because he was facing a cyborg at the time). I'm really going to have to call bullshit on this one. It's been contradicted countless times. He fights robots and cyborgs all the time, and he makes the first move in a lot of his battles. Also, in the issue in question, Danny Chan was a cyborg designed to infiltrate and undermine the team by targeting their humanity. He represented a lot of things that the Midnighter is attracted too. Midnighter didn't attack him because he had a little tsundere crush on him. If you disagree, feel free to hit me up, and we'll discuss it.

relationships
Edit
The Midnighter doesn't from close bonds very quickly or easily; not with adults, anyway. He's a huge loner, and a gigantic grump. Yeah, he talks to people if he needs something to do, but making friends isn't something he particularly wants or needs to do.

Added by Sahara StormApollo: Everywhere I'm looking now, I'm surrounded by your embraaaace. Baby I can see your halo. You know you're my saving graaaace. AHEM. But, no, seriously. Apollo has saved the Midnighter in more ways than one. He's his anchor. He keeps him sane in many ways. They've been through literal hells together, and the Midnighter knows he couldn't have done it with anyone else, because... no one GETS him like Apollo does. Living through the shit that they did went a long way in bringing them together. Some parts of him will always remain closed off, but Apollo gets the closest to those parts. If you'd like the Midnighter to kill you in interestingly messy ways, go ahead and try hurting Apollo. Just... try. Apollo is his flaming toothpick, his big dumb blonde, his beautiful bastard, his sun god, and he genuinely loves him. They've had their rough patches, like in any other relationship, but they always bounce back from them. HUSBANDS, BROS AND PARTNERS FOR LIIIIFE.
Jenny Q.: This girl... THIS GIRL... She's the Spirit of the 21st Century; the reincarnation of Jenny Sparks. He and Apollo adopted her when she was a baby, and just so you know, raising the most powerful being in the universe? Not exactly a cakewalk. She became 14 when she decided she was tired of being 8, she's stubborn, rebellious, smokes like a chimney, can be manipulative as all get out... and he loves her. Truly, truly loves her, no matter the shit she pulls, her disobedience and her smart mouth. He would do anything for her, and the things he's done to people who've tried to harm her would make most people lose their lunch. He loves her fiercely. Being a father complicates his life, but it's made him happy in a lot of ways. That brat❤.
Angie: Angie is sensible, efficient, funny, and easy to work with. They share a lot of the same ideals. She comes to him for advice sometimes. (He is not a fag hag, though. That's Apollo's area of expertise.) She helped get Bendix out of his mind and body with her nanites that one time, and he'll always be grateful for that.
Jack: Jack and the Midnighter clash a lot; especially when it comes to politics and the time that Jack spent as the President of the United States. Midnighter wasn't happy with a lot of his policies regarding involvement in politics, civilian life, and the vote, etc. Nevertheless, they retain a good working relationship. Their differences don't stop them from kicking ass together.
Li-Min: Li and Midnighter get along well. She's not annoying, she's not clingy, and she can throw down a good fight when she needs to, but she's also a good diplomat. Which means the Midnighter doesn't often have to do any negotiating. She also gives good advice -- she helped him out after he did one of the hardest things he's ever had to. Maybe it's the Buddhist thing.
Habib: Jeroen's successor as the Doctor. An absolute greenhorn in many ways. He can't be blamed; he's just a kid. But Midnighter does think he needs to buck up on some stuff, and get stronger in many ways if he's going to be the Doctor. Although, lol, if he knew that Habib and Jenny sorta kinda have a thing going on, he'd be forced to gut the poor kid. Obligated, really.
Rose: Used to be the living spirit of murder, until she became the living spirit of life? The Midnighter can mostly dig it. He became friendly with her in the short time that she was apart of the team, but now, sadly, she's dead. ...Right?
Jeroen: Honestly, he's a gigantic fuck-up who could have seriously done a better job of being the Earth's Shaman while he had the post. Midnighter was not really impressed with his drug addiction. At the same time, Jereon did his best when he was able to, and Midnighter knows this. He's sorry that he had to die like he did.
Jenny S.: Jenny will always hold a special place in his heart-shaped place. She gave him a purpose when she invited he and Apollo to join the Authority, and she was a great leader. He's got a healthy amount of respect for her, and her memory. It's a little part of why Jenny Q. is so special to him (though he definitely doesn't see them as the same person, reincarnation or not).
The Carrier: Their sentient shift-ship that cruises the Bleed and allows them to teleport anywhere in the world, and also to visit other worlds. The Midnighter is secretly her favourite. <3
other
Edit
Henry Bendix: What a fucking psychopathic tool, seriously. He gave the Midnighter his implants and then sent him and his team on a suicide mission. Midnighter repayed the favour by ripping out his spine and spewing his entrails all over the Carrier. The bastard never does seem to stay dead, but the Midnighter will happily kill him again if the opportunity arises. He won't admit it, but Bendix does faze him. He and Apollo still have nightmares about that doomed mission.
Jackson King: Kinda ambivalent about him. Jackson was the one to give him and Apollo an actual life after the Nevada Garden mess, after those five years of living underground, hiding and fighting and barely living. On the other hand, he's got a kind of leader-complex, and Stormwatch and the Authority clash often because of it. At heart, he knows Jackson is a good guy, but if he invades the Midnighter's mind again -- or worse, this daughter's mind -- he's gonna take it personally.
Christine Trelane: Jackson's wife. Is a genius or something?? He's never talked to her too much but she's alright.
Mindy: An orphan with parental issues who he became reluctantly close to. She reminds him of Jenny Q in a lot of ways, and helped him out during his time in Harmony. She calls Midnighter her 'creepy uncle'. Lawd...
Grifter: Asshole. Reluctantly worked with him that one time to save the world, but in general, he thinks he's an idiot and he tries too hard. (He actually doesn't mind Grifter as much as he pretends.)
Zealot: Huge bitch. Itching to fight her. (They will, in the future. It's gon be gud.)
Kev Hawkins: Some homophobic British asshole that Midnighter has had to work with like three fucking times, God. There is seriously no love lost between them, but whatever, they manage to make it work whenever they have to interact. Kev will invariably call him a poof, and the Midnighter will then invariably rearrange his face. And tell him how great Apollo is in the sack or something. There is a little bit of respect floating around their relationship... somewhere... per... haps...

Added by Sahara Storm- You'll notice that his unmasked icons feature him with various hair colours. That's because he dyes it regularly. Idek why. He's originally a redhead, as stated above, but he favours a medium brown or blond colour most of the time.
- He's fluent in German, Russian, and several other languages.
- It is categorically impossible to sneak up on him.
- Is a fan of Jon Stewart? Lol.
- He once drove a woman to suicide after he saved her life. Not because of anything he did or said (he was being very kind and patient, actually) but because she was just so scared of him. :( She jumped out of a window rather than take his hand. It was a pretty huge reality check for him.
- 'The Midnighter' is the only name he has, and it's one of the only things he'll answer to, but he actually doesn't like it at all. Given to him by Henry Bendix, and all. And let's be honest, what the fuck kind of codename is 'the Midnighter', anyway? Regardless, it's the only moniker that he'll use and considers his own. He'll use Lucas Trent if he has to (it's the identify his daughter fabricated for him when she was being all Machiavellian) but like he says, "that's not my name."
