HISTORYEdit

Not a lot is given about Adachi’s history before the game starts but we do know that he is a 27 year old rookie police detective who was transferred from an unnamed city to the small town of Inaba shortly before the game began. The reasons behind his transfer are never fully revealed although Adachi seems to believe that it was punishment for “one tiny mistake” (how true this is, we’ll never really know). Upon being transferred he was assigned as Ryotaro Dojima’s partner on the Inaba force. He also came in contact with the goddess Izanami in disguise who gave him the power to enter the television world as part of her experiment. In this experiment, Adachi would represent “Emptiness”.

With that power he ended up murdering two women: Mayumi Yamano, a newscaster involved in an affair with Taro Namatame, and Saki Konishi, a high school student. In the case of Yamano, Adachi (seemingly showing interest in her) confronted her about the affair in the hotel she was hiding in. When Yamano refused to answer him, Adachi snapped and tried to assault her, pushing her up against the TV. However, to his surprise, she fell in. The next day, she showed up dead, hanging upside down on a TV antenna. Her body was discovered by Saki. Adachi questioned Saki several times, more than what was necessary. After seeing Namatame talk to her though, Adachi made a move on her, then shoved her in a TV. Saki showed up dead like Yamano, only on a telephone pole this time. After that, Adachi didn’t murder anyone else. However he did unknowingly dupe Namatame into continuing to throw people into the TV world, thinking he was “saving” them from being murdered like the other two.

From that point on, for most of the game Adachi just plays the role of Dojima’s derpy partner, being dragged home for dinner and out for drinking, slowly getting to know the Dojima family and Souji more and more. The Investigation Team see him around quite often and he usually ends up blabbing about the case unintentionally and sometimes intentionally. Adachi figures out what’s going on before anyone else, figuring out what the IT is really up to approximately around the time of Rise’s disappearance. The whole situation just becomes a cat and mouse game for him to sit back and enjoy. He even throws Mitsuo Kubo, a copycat murderer who tried to confess for the other crimes as well, into the TV to “keep the game going” and sends warning letters to Souji.

Things go bad in November though, when Namatame kidnaps Nanako Dojima and Dojima himself is injured. When Nanako is saved she ends up in the hospital with an unknown condition. Adachi starts to act a lot more jittery in this month. Finally in December, he is confronted by the team and ends up running into a TV to escape. There, the TV world seems to “prefer” him; the shadows don’t attack him and instead listen to him and he can mess around with the layout/landscape of his world (Magatsu Inaba) however he wants. He taunts the IT while he’s in there and likes the idea of the real world merging with the TV world and becoming covered in fog. This world where everyone becomes their shadows but don’t have to see what they don’t want to seems to be Adachi’s ideal. Eventually though, he is defeated by the Investigation Team. Afterwards he gets possessed by the god Ameno-sagiri but the IT defeat him too. Adachi asks to be left to die, but the IT bring him back to their world, telling him to live and face his punishment. Adachi agrees to “live by the rules of this world” and makes a full confession to the crimes, lying to make sure he’ll be convicted.

Adachi’s final act in the game comes months later, in March before Souji leaves Inaba. He expresses that there’s still something bugging him, gives the heroes some information and asks them to “clean up on the outside for me”. This letter helps them discover Izanami, the true mastermind behind the year’s past events.

PERSONALITYEdit

Adachi is a little complicated. On the surface he’s just your average nice guy. A real goofball, it’s hard to believe at times that he’s 27 years old… especially when

he acts like a manchild and does things like buy toys like magic kits (from a piece of NPC dialogue), put stickers on his police organizer (drama CD) and just generally act like… well, a boy. He even gets excited and acts like a big kid about things in his profession that interest him (like forensics). He’s not exactly the most dedicated or responsible cop in the world though; most of the time he can be found lazing around or running his mouth off to civilians. Adachi’s attitude gives one the impression that he’s an idiot (although he’s definitely smarter than people give him credit for, he just also tends to be a big dumbass) but he does have this kind of endearing dorkish/boyish charm.

Like all people though, there’s more to Adachi than meets the eye. Underneath that clumsy exterior is a bitter man who’s given up. A man who worked his ass off to become the “best of the best” only to lose it all. A man with an overwhelming secret.

The Adachi below the surface is a misanthropic jerk who hates the bumpkin town he was transferred to. At his worst he’s a creep, a sore loser throwing a temper tantrum and a tad manipulative. He is pessimistic and jaded especially when it comes to society and reality. So when presented with actual kindness or something nice he’s not sure how to react, other than push it out of his lap.

This darker side doesn’t mean that his exterior is a lie though. Adachi is really not much of a liar. What he is though is an actor and he exaggerates his more socially accepted characteristics to endear himself to others, carefully hiding everything else. It’s all very much still a part of him as the rest is though.

It should also be noted that Adachi is very impulsive and will do things more on instinct rather than take the time to think them through. Combined with the fact he’s a coward, he’s more prone to run from a situation than deal with it and try to defend himself.

At this point in his timeline though, Adachi is just tired. He tried to change the world to his ideal and failed. He played a game of cat and mouse and lost. Now all he can do is live by society’s rules and pay for what he did. If brought out of prison and introduced to normal people again though he will revert back to his old masks but with a distinct sort of hollowness now and then.

• In English, Adachi is voiced by JOHNNY YONG BOSCH and in Japanese he's voiced by Mitsuaki Madono. I'm a fan of both voices and Adachi's voice switches back and forth between the two in my head and when I tag. In the end, I prefer JYB a bit more though.

• The first thing Adachi wished for in Paradisa (to test the whole wish thing out) were... stickers. Therefore there are stickers of beetles (ridiculously popular amongst young Japanese boys and adult Japanese men) all over the cover of his journal.
  • ...on the inside of the cover though are stickers of "Cutie Pure", a popular long running magical girl show from his world that has a main demographic of young Japanese girls and sub demographic of Japanese men in their late 20's and 30's.
    • His favorite is still Pure White ok.
  • The sticker thing has canon basing! In the 3rd drama cd Adachi reveals that Dojima got mad at him for trying to put stickers on his police organizer.
• In Japanese, Adachi's writing is mostly all in kana due to his own laziness and the fact that he has actually forgotten a lot of kanji (according to the 3rd drama cd). In English, this is changed to writing entirely in low caps with no punctuation.
• Despite popular fandom memes, his favorite food is not cabbage. It's actually sea urchin!
  • Cabbage is however very versatile and you can use it in anything. Plus it's always on sale!
• On that note, he actually is a decent cook, but he is both cheap and lazy.
• He always sleeps in his clothes.
• His family name contains the characters for "leg" and "walk", while his given name is written with the character for "transparent".
