ABOUT
Edit
Stubborn, level-headed (to a degree), practical and clever, Veralidaine is a good example of a Tamora Pierce heroine. She overcomes huge obstacles, fights things supposedly out of her league, and, in the end, beats the odds to come out happy and on top. What else would you expect from the lead female of a young adult series? While she does fit the normal outline, Daine isn't your normal girl in a medieval setting. Let's explore a bit.
To start, she isn't of noble birth. Her mother was a common hedge witch slash midwife from a small town in the north of Galla. Not knowing who her father was (yet) and born out of wedlock, Daine was considered a bastard child, thus, earning her and her family the disrespect and less than kind treatment of the local populace. With that in mind, it's clear throughout the series, despite the fact she later learns her father is a minor God, that she thinks of things like a commoner and is willing to state her views without having to tap-dance around subjects like a good portion of nobles must do. It gives her a good vantage point when sizing up situations, whether they be strategical or personal.
Continuing in that vein of things, Daine isn't a born scholar, but that doesn't mean she's dumb. As we see her grow in her series and beyond, she learns about things quickly. Magic, strategy, politics, protocol, court behavior, and more, she manages to grasp it when she needs to. In fact, it's shown she is eager for this information, or at least the stuff she deems interesting.
As mentioned above, the girl learns about magic, which is definitely worth its own section here. She has what's known as Wild Magic, a rare type of magic that lets her connect with animals. While most possessors of this gift have a connection with only one animal, Daine has it to such a degree that she may converse with all manner of vertebrates, due to her father's godhood. Not only can she speak with creatures, she can share their minds, command them, shape shift, and heal them. Having such skills makes it easy for her to relate to animals and understand their feelings. Sometimes, she thinks in terms of their logic rather than humans'.
With this quantity of magic, many people would go power mad, causing all sorts of havoc. She, however, thinks about her actions. She refuses to command animals to do her bidding, preferring to ask them instead. She won't interfere with the natural balance of things such a saving animals from being hunted, since she's well aware everyone needs to eat somehow.
Another facet of her character is her compassion and not just for humans or animals. Multiple times in the course of her run, Daine is seen working out solutions that benefit both populations. She's able to get animals and humans to work together for the good of the kingdom of Tortall as well as keep each other safe from harm. If worse comes to worse, she's found standing up for the animal world against humans who don't take them into consideration. Being a voice for those who aren't able to express theirs is a challenge, but it's a challenge she's willing to take.
Like her ability to shape shift shows, Daine does have a degree of adaptability. She can adjust course in the middle of a plan to make things work for her as well as improvise when needed. A fun example is, when is bird form, emptying her bowls in the face of an approaching enemy to keep them off her tail.
Finally, albeit more typical than the rest, she has a temper, though, it's a lot more controlled than some other people's. When it is ignited, things can go very wrong. Due to her magic, her emotions are able to project themselves on to the animals around her, causing them to experience her distress and anger. If this happens, feathers fly, and things can get bad, so she does her best to keep her severe emotions in check as to not have the animals panic.
Overall, Veralidaine is an offbeat girl with tremendous power, a big heart and even bigger possibilities. Drop her upside down in a new place, and she'd still manage to find her way to some sort of sense. At least it would be her definition of the word.

Edit
Daine has what's known as 'wild magic', which gives her a connection to most animals (vertebrates, specifically) and lets her perform several unusual feats in regards to their kind.
- Communication / Sensing
The first thing she learned with her magic was how to communicate mind to mind with the People (animals). Throughout the series, her range grows, from a mile to over thirty. For easiness of play in Paradisa, her range has been limited to a ten mile radius.
Additionally, she is also able to sense animals within this radius, picking out what kind they are and how many are present. With this skill comes the ability to sense Immortals. These are beings who are immune to disease and aging, and may only be killed by injuries. Daine is able to communicate mind to mind with the types who don't have voices of their own. In Paradisa, if it comes up, I'll be making contact with the players of characters who might qualify for this category of magical stuff.
- Healing
Just like it sounds, she can heal animals. Depending on the injury, it may be fixed in a matter of moments or a few hours, though the latter is debatable, as she's really only shown healing serious injuries in her books as her abilities are growing. Regardless, she can fix broken bones, clear diseases, mend organs and muscles, as well as rejuvenate tired creatures.
- Mind Sharing
Also pretty self-explanatory, Daine can share the mind of an animals. This allows her so see through their eyes, experience their senses and travel with them while her body remains elsewhere. As this goes on, she can still communicate with her host.
- Shape Shifting
Whether it be a full shift or just a part of her body (changing her eyes to see better), she can change into almost any animal. She's even able to combine forms, such as different bird parts to make a form suited to her needs. One of the only limitations is that if she shifts into an Immortal form, she's stuck. Needless to say, that won't be happening anytime soon.
- Commands
Another ability, albeit rarely used, is that of commanding animals through sheer force of will. If needed or desired, she could force an animal to do her bidding, whether it be staying put and not doing something or following her around for a week. She is able to command more than one creature at once, but it's draining over a long period of time. In any case, it's a skill she refuses to utilize under the strong belief that animals are their own beings, and it would be similar to slavery.
- Intellect
If an animal remains under a prolonged period of contact with Daine, it gradually becomes smarter and its thought process more human. This also takes effect if her blood is somehow ingested. Prime examples of this would be her pony, Cloud, and the members of the Long Lake wolf pack, most notably their leader, Broke Fang.
Daine is able to bring about this change willingly, but she's hesitant to do so, believing she's doing animals a disservice.
Non-Magic
Edit
These would be her skills outside of her magical set.
- Archery
Crossbow, long bow, short bow, whatever, Daine is skilled with it. Even when she's only thirteen, she's able to out shoot skilled officers of the Queen's Riders. It's probably safe to say her skills grow as she does.
- Wilderness Survival
Hunting, tracking, fishing, camping, she's able to do it. Having traveled around for a good portion of her life, she's made surviving outside of comfort second nature to her.
