Vergil Sparda

Basic Information Edit

A special note: A lot of Vergil's history, personality and goals are completely gray (if not black), leaving it open to interpretation. Also, his time in Paradisa has allowed him time to grow and develop. As such, there is a good degree of fan-theory here that makes up his life.

History and Background Edit

A Born Son of Sparda Edit

Vergil, like Dante, is a son of Sparda, and charged with inheriting the legacy of the greater demon. They were the half devil children of the human priest Eva, and the fabled Sparda. They were born into the world just before Sparda's life ended. As such, they were fathered more by a legend than the greater demon himself. And while Dante grew to resent his father and his legacy, Vergil seemed to embrace him and it.

It was at a young age were Vergil first became determined to inherit his father's legacy. He wanted to ensure the survival of his father’s legacy, and to do proud the memory of the greater demon.

Of course, like all childhood ambitions, plans change.

Death and Rebirth Edit

Upon their birthday, Vergil and Dante received a half of Sparda's amulet, the key component in the seal between the demon and mortal realms. Vergil also received the Yamato, an O-Katana. Shortly thereafter, demons attacked the Sparda family. Dante hid as per his mother's words, but Vergil took his blade and charged to help. As a result, Vergil's mother was killed in front of him, left to bleed to death in his arms.

He never heard her final words.

It was on that day, when she died, and when he could not find his brother, that Vergil changed. Gone was his ambition of living up to the legacy of Sparda, replaced for an endless quest to inherit power. A power to do what he could not now, no matter the cost to those innocent and guilty.

He died that day, and was reborn anew.

A Brief Meeting Edit

A year before he turned nineteen, Vergil encountered Dante. Just as his ambition had changed, so did the man himself. It was never explained what had occurred during their reunion, however it was clear that their encounter was not a pleasant one, and by the time it ended, the brothers were more enemies than family. Where there was once a bond of kinship now laid a hatred that ran deep.

It was also around this time that a man named Arkham was introduced to Vergil. The ideal plan was laid out, and Vergil's goal to obtain true power was finally beginning to take form.

Devils Never Cry Edit

Arkham helps Vergil to break the first seven seals Sparda cast upon the Temen-ni-gru, and then directs him to the Forbidden Land at the base of the tower. Vergil is later seen alongside Arkham at the top of the emerging tower, and when the Hell Vanguard they sent to kill Dante returns, having failed its task, Vergil immediately dispatches it.

Vergil waits at the top of the tower for Dante, and at one point dispatches Arkham to eliminate Lady. When Dante reaches the peak of the tower, the two banter and then ferociously battle. Vergil emerges victorious, and takes Dante's Amulet as his prize. Though Dante's Devil Trigger begins to manifest and Vergil prepares to fight him again, Arkham urges him to ignore Dante, and the two jump off the tower to reenter the Forbidden Land.

As Vergil and Arkahm approach the final door to the Sacrificial Chamber, Vergil reveals his knowledge of Arkham's betrayal, and deals him a mortal blow. He then enters the chamber and commences the ritual to open the gate to the demonic world. During this ritual, he is momentarily interrupted by a blinded Beowulf, who has mistaken him for Dante. However, Vergil quickly vivisects the devil, and takes his soul as a Devil Arm.

While Dante was hurrying up to the final seal, Vergil had no luck on unlocking the seal, and was later interrupted by Dante. The twins engaged another fight, which was interrupted by Lady. Although the battle ended with a tie. Both demonic brothers were equally wounded, and Jester makes his appearance by telling everybody has served their role nicely. Jester later turned back and forth between Arkham and Jester, explaining why Vergil's ritual was incomplete, and why Vergil has failed against Dante and Lady. Arkham completes the ritual, and then plays with the three warriors while waiting for the tower to activate. Once it does, he knocks them off the ascending platform, and Vergil falls into an abyss.

Later, after Dante enters the Netherworld, Vergil is seen passing through the Divine Library, with Lady still huddled up, wounded and in grief, after her battle with Dante. She hears his footsteps and looks up to see who it was, but by that time, he had already gone through the door that Dante took. Vergil later interrupts Dante's fight with the ascended Arkham, and the twins finish Arkham off together. However, Vergil has not given up his goal of obtaining the Force Edge, and the twins are again forced to fight. Though Dante is able to defeat Vergil, he cannot convince him to return to the Human World, and Vergil falls even deeper into the Netherworld.

No Power, No Future, No Hope Edit

While he has not lived out these events, Paradisa has been all to forthcoming with his future. He knows that when he returns, his life will end. He has seen what he becomes, he remembers what he goes through to become it, and thanks to his brother, he knows that he dies at his hands. As a monster, a slave to the devil that killed everyone he loved, and took his life away.

Paradisa has become his life now. And he struggles to, but he lives each day there as best as he can.

Abilities Edit

Overview Edit

Out of concern for some opinions regarding Vergil that I’ve been party to, I’m taking a moment to create a dedicated section to the abilities and strengths that the half-devil has. Just to clarify, this is taking into account the facts, information and history of his canon universe as opposed to it being a video game. I wholly plan on providing video based evidence to the points made as soon as I can locate the specific, working videos.

Being a hybrid (Half-Demon), he has naturally enhanced characteristics that go far beyond the capacity of normal humans. He is much stronger, much faster, and able to take much more physical pain. I'm going to take time to go ever each individual section in detail, including his Devil-Trigger form and the effect it has.

Strength Edit

When enhanced strength is said, it should be noted that this does not mean Vergil can hurl trees or boulders through the air, or lift thousands of men at once. Even with the Beowulf gauntlets on, which do further enhance strength and detract from speed, Vergil is not able to hurl heavier bodies flying through the air. At best, he can launch something very heavy up into the air a short distance, perhaps ten to twelve feet at best. In Devil-Trigger (something I’ll further explain later), one can add another few feet to maximum height, extending it to, at best, 15-16 feet. Also, the amount of structural damage Vergil can cause is, even with Beowulf, going to vary depending on what exactly he is attacking. In the case of, say, a castle wall… the damage would remain in the minor to mild categories. This is, of course, unless he decides to focus a constant string of powerful attacks on a single point, in which case it would eventually break (like anything would). This would, once he was accomplished, leave him drained and tired. Once again, even in Devil-Trigger, single or a few attacks will not destroy a castle wall.

Speed Edit

Vergil’s main attribute is his speed. He is unnaturally fast, even for a half-demon. Without going into Devil-Trigger, Vergil’s stand attacks can be executed with such speed that it doesn’t even look like his sword was drawn. He has a skill that allows him to turn a bubble of air into a vortex through rapid slashes called Judgment Slash, and can do this up to three times in rapid succession. He can also extend on this by doing a Final version of the attack, in which he does countless more, usually in between 15-30. While doing this, he is moving at such speed that he is invisible to the naked eye. (This ability is only usable in Devil-Trigger, and will leave him absolutely exhausted after executing.) He is also capable of a form of short range teleportation, usually to a maximum of 10-20 feet, which he can execute in rapid succession on ground, and up to three times while airborne. This allows him to move even faster than he normally can, and he can continuously do this without exhausting himself immediately. Vergil can also deflect bullets with his sword, and actually suck them up into an incredibly fast vortex he creates by spinning his sword, then launch them back. He can only do this with swords, and will be unable to deflect bullets with Beowulf.

Endurance Edit

Due to the devils blood that runs in his veins, Vergil is capable of withstanding incredible amount of physical injury. This can range anywhere from a stubbed toe to being stabbed or potentially disemboweled. He has even survived very normally fatal attacks and falling from obscene heights. It should also be noted that, unless your guns use magically imbued ammunition, your bullets will not be able to kill Vergil. Even head shots will not be effective. They can hurt him (like being hit by a really powerful slingshot) but they won’t kill him or even break the skin. Despite all of this, Vergil is not invincible. While he does have an exceptional healing ability, he can be cut and sliced open deeply and bled dry. While slamming him around or tossing him off a cliff won’t kill him, suffocating him or drowning him will. It should also be noted that Vergil, like his brother, does have passive regenerative qualities up to a point, but they do not take affect while in battle, and they only serve to a specific point before letting them do the rest of the work. (For instance, arm gets sliced open, his regenerative capabilities will partially heal up the open wound and minimize the size of it.) This also extends to poisons as well, though it depends on the quality of the poison, the time it takes to kill and its fatality rate. The higher it is and the faster it works, the less likely he will survive it. When in Devil-Trigger, the regenerative process does work in active battle, though it does more to heal fatigue and smaller wounds then bigger ones. It should be noted that this is a continuous healing, and will stop when Vergil falls out of Devil Trigger.

Additional Notes Edit

Striking any vital organs, like the heart, will either kill him or bring him down. Even in Devil-Trigger, any damage he takes will be carried over to his human form. If you’re very good with a sword/dagger, and even better at being invisible or not getting caught, you could kill Vergil before he has the chance to pull out his sword.

Senses Edit

Due to his being half demonic, he is party to demonic senses, although at a weaker level. Sight, hearing, smell and taste are all enhanced as a result, allowing him to be more mindful and aware of his surroundings. On top of this, he has a sixth sense to him that is related to his own personal bubble, and a sort of awareness to all that goes on within it. Which, while it does not make him impossible to sneak up on, it can make it incredible hard. As usual, Devil-Trigger enhances most of these, save for the personal bubble sixth sense. By this time, however, he wouldn’t be worried about what he can sense.

Devil-Trigger Edit

You’ve read it a lot, and now I’ll describe it. Devil-Trigger is when Vergil goes from being primarily human to primarily demon. In this form, almost all his parameters are increased impressively, making him all the more deadly and all the harder to stop. This form relies on an internal energy that is usually labeled “Demonic Essence” to be used, and is generated from combat, from both fighting and being wounded. He has, at peak, roughly 3-5 minutes in this form before he falls out into human form again. The aftermath of a Devil-Trigger leaves Vergil drained for a brief period, which results in all of his parameters falling backwards on him. After a brief period of time, usually a minute or two, he’ll be back in fighting form. In this form, Vergil becomes more of a berserker than anything else, due to the time frame, and may actually be easier to hit directly. This doesn’t mean it will stop him, but it does mean he will take damage when this is said and done. And while it is not possible to kill him in Devil-Trigger, it is possible to kill him as a result of injures caused to him while he is in Devil-Trigger.

TL:DR Edit

So, the TL:DR version of this goes as followed. On a scale from 1-10 Strength: 7/ DT: 9 (When using Beowulf gauntlets 8/ DT: 10) Speed: 10/ DT: 10 (When using Beowulf gauntlets 8/ DT: 9) Endurance: 8/ DT: 9 Senses: 9/ DT: N/A

He can be: Killed, cut, sliced, beat, crushed, broken, sustain internal damage, be bled to death, suffocate, drowned, suffer from broken bones, suffer from varying diseases and poisons, be mentally crushed, be assassinated, have his neck slit, be blinded and deafened, suffer aneurysms and many other mental conditions.

He can: Heal naturally to a point, teleport over short distance, attack with incredible speed, survive bullets to the head (Unless the bullets are magically imbued)

He can’t: Teleport from ground to roof or huge distances, naturally heal from a deep stab or a massive open wound, dodge everything, attack constantly,

Regarding Questions and Concerns Edit

If you feel like you have input in regards to the abilities listed, email me with them. You can access my email at my user page. I'll be happy to take any logical explanations provided under consideration, and revise this section should I find I've missed something or that the information is valid.

Personality Edit

Vergil himself is a rather anti-social individual. While he is no stranger to conversing, he seems to have difficulty in actually talking to someone like they are a person, and not an obstacle. He values power above all else, and is adamant on acquiring more. It is hard to tell just why he wants all this power, and he makes a point of not explaining his motivation to anyone. He has no problem in discussing what he has accomplished and what he has failed in, although he does not exemplify his failures.

He has a sense of humor, which surprises mostly everyone. The blunt of his jokes and taunts are delivered in a deadpan matter, and even though he knows it is banter, he delivers it as though he is being serious.

He is also a steadfast warrior. He is confident in his abilities, even to the point of being slightly blinded. Due to this, he will not willingly abandon a battle midway. Even if he is the weaker contestant in the match, he will not flee. He also refuses to begin battles in a cowardly manner. However, that does not mean he will not strike the first blow if provoked or taunted enough.

Finally, he respects those that realize the true worth of power, and of its importance. And while he has only tasted defeat in an actual battle twice, he respects those that do best him in combat. (Unless, of course, you're a certain family member. In which case, he still does not like you.)

Relationships Edit

Canon Edit

-- Dante: As you may recall, Cain and Abel were brothers too. But Dante is his brother, even if Paradisa has messed that up, and despite their very opposing relationship, do not fuck with one and expect the other to ignore. And if you think either of them are hax separately, then don't ever fuck with both of them at the same time.

-- Arkham: Originally, a tool. However, after Arkham pulled an impressive fast one over Vergil, their working relationship took a turn for the worse.

-- Lady: Vergil regards her as a nuisance, but little else. However, since her arrival in Paradisa, Vergil has found her to be quite a bit more than just a nuisance. Somewhere in between passing her in the library and dying, she grew up a whole lot. Either that, or Dante has had a much larger effect on her than he should have.

-- Sparda: The father he knew by legend alone. Became determined to inherit his power. Held his father's legacy in high regard.

-- Eva: The mother that was taken from him. Hard to say really, but it seems that he cherished her. Vergil's obsession for power was a result of her demise during a demon attack.

Paradisa Edit

Closest to his "Heart" Edit

There is something that beats inside him, that pumps blood throughout his body. That keeps him human, when he would rather be nothing at all. People here are the reason why he wants his heart to keep beating.

-- Five: These two first met during Vergil's insanity loss, where the Fifth became a voice of reason and limited clarity. While it did not necessarily breach the layers upon layers of madness, it did seem to clear the skies of insanity. Since then, Vergil has held a fondness for the time traveler, and then a deep respect. He sees a wealth of knowledge that knows no end, and a person that has experienced the worst and best of almost all races, especially humanity. And now, he turns to Five as a source of council, and has since learned that he provides the best advice and answers (logical or otherwise). And as of late, Five has now seen what Vergil has come from, and knows a great deal of who he is. It was he that came to Vergil when he was suffering from total sensory isolation and let him know that he was not alone. In Vergil's mind, the Fifth is sacred. And the Master aside (for now), anyone that harms will suffer a very painful fate.

-- Setsuna: She's BACK!. But Vergil was willing to die for her. And if there was anyone in Paradisa that he would have, possibly, deviated from his life goal for? It would have been her. Truth is, she managed to make Vergil do something that he had stopped ever since his mother died. And that was care for someone. And while you will never see it, no matter how hard you search, that fact horrifies him beyond measure. And despite her departure from the world of Paradisa, her time there lingers and carries on in his mind and heart. Unfortunately, this new Setsuna and Vergil do not get along nearly as well. But that's begging to change.

-- Yuan: Without a doubt, the most important person to Vergil in Paradisa. When Vergil's life ended at the age of nine, his ability to trust and care for anyone went with him. If Setsuna managed to make him care about people, then it was Yuan that has rekindled his ability to trust others. Yuan is the closest thing to a true friend he has, and will likely ever have. He has become another voice of reason in Vergil's life, albeit a much more vocal one when it comes to Vergil's obsession with power. Through their discussions, Vergil had discovered that he draws parallels to someone from Yuan’s world, Mithos. Something that both interests him and, upon an enlightening discussion with Sheena, concerns him greatly. He also realized that because of that parallel, Yuan may be trying to purposely detour him from attaining true power. As time continued on in Paradisa, Vergil found himself telling more and more to Yuan, as both a confidant and simply for the sake of hearing his opinion. He trusts Yuan with the more difficult tasks, such as killing him when complete sensory deprivation set in. It is clear that he does not want to harm him at all. For example during Vergil's Nelo Angelo loss, he managed to keep himself from attacking Yuan. Perhaps the most important fact of all is that Yuan knows what Vergil intends to do with all his power, making him the only person in the castle with that knowledge. Like the Fifth, Vergil considers Yuan's life sacred.

Key People Edit

-- Del: Del brings out a brotherly side in Vergil, and the two are often party to some long and bizarre conversations. Truth be told, Vergil is rather fond of the Endless, and finds her to be both good company and an enlightening presence. She does say things that often rub him the wrong way and forces him to take a moment though.

-- Ino: He's quite fond of the ninja girl. Finds her company to be enjoyable and their conversations to be meaningful in their own ways. He has recently been putting her up since a newcomer decided to target her. He has full faith in her abilities when it comes to survival, and feels that he's offering to mutually tackle a problem, not protect her from it.

-- Joshua Kiryu: Has proven himself to be an immensely interesting and entertaining individual, but it's more than that. They have epic sarcasm contests between one another, which often give way to the ultimate form of mental contests. He doesn't like or hate Joshua, but he does consider the little bastard to be irreplaceable.

-- Kratos: Vergil and Kratos have a rather odd relationship that really does depend on the weather. One moment they'll be furious at one another, the next they're confidants. Vergil doesn't actually like Kratos. But he does respect the man up to a point, and trusts him to another one. Their relationship was strenuously tested when Vergil lashed into him for being a self dictated slave to fate. As a result, however, Kratos is now the only aware of Vergil's intentions when he leaves Paradisa.

Acquaintances Edit

-- Akabane: Fought during his time as Nelo Angelo. Wants to fight again.

-- Allen: Very interesting person to talk to, rather enjoys the conversations they've had so far. Currently joined forces in response to a vampire targeting Ino. He should be very scared.

-- Crowley: Quite amusing. Is rather fond of the fact that this is one of the Biblical figures of lore. Though he is a bit of an idiot, and his mouth will eventually get him into trouble.

-- Colette: She's...something alright. Vergil finds her comforting to talk to, but feels guilty talking to her simply out of how radically opposite they are. Will not tolerate anyone harming her.

-- Dream: Vergil is more than just interested with this remarkable figure. There is a fundamental respect and almost an admiration regarding this being. That said, Vergil is not above risking his temper to find out more about him.

-- Jacob Black: Interesting person that he has not spoken with much. During Jacob's kid loss, Vergil told him stories and legends of his world, including the legend of Sparda and of Sparda's sons.

-- Kukaku Shiba: A most interesting person that has proven adept at combat and at conversation.

-- Lelouch: This one is quite interesting. Although their direct contact has been limited, Vergil has made a point of following his entries whenever possible. Currently, Lelouch is in possession of a week long contract for Vergil's services that he can cash in at any time.

-- Lloyd: Greeted him when he arrived by trying to kill him. He's trying to make up for that now.

-- Mayu Amakura: THAT FUCKING HURT! :/

-- Nia: Similar to Colette, he feels guilty about talking with her based on their radical differences. But his defenses are weakening around her. She's very kind and, in her own way, stubborn.

-- Reno: They have some brief conversations, but nothing to in depth. Vergil realizes that Reno may be one of the few "collected" individuals. Appreciates that, especially in this den of raging insanity.

-- Romeo: They've reached a queer point where they're both complimentary to each other. It's an odd sort of relationship that could be confused as both hatred and love. No one knows what it is, actually.

-- Sebastian: Very interesting and enjoys the intelligent conversation. Is stalking and will continue to.

-- Sheena Fujibayashi: Vergil finds her to be pleasant to talk to. As a result of the mirror plot, they wound up having sex. They're in a difficult, awkward spot, with no real way of telling where it will go.

-- Zelman: Sometimes they're friendly, sometimes they're snarking each other out, and sometimes one of them is nomming on the other. One of these days, he's going to get shanked. Repeatedly. And then thrown off the roof of the castle.

Disliked/Enemies Edit

-- Azula: An altogether unpleasant and annoying pest, her self absorbed demeanor is considerably bothersome. It wasn't until she ordered around the Fifth following the Second Master's departure that he considered her an enemy. Does not like her at all, and is looking for a reason to put her in her place. Princess or not, no one is above the Devil.

-- Ner'zhul: Currently Vergil's number one enemy. He's like Mundus, only with a silver tongue. When he can, he is going to kill this miserable piece of filth, and he is going to draw it out and thoroughly enjoy it.

-- Prime: They've never liked each other. They never will. Mostly because he's a whiny little bitch.

More to come as they come. If I miss anyone, slap me.
