Tips on Writing Good Character Descriptions Edit

We are not interested in what they look like. We're primarily looking for the following things:

Main Personality Traits (positive or negative)
Are they loving, gentle, rude, strong and silent? Are they stubborn, angry, bitchy? What are the traits you'll notice about them first? Superficially, what is the basest description of their personality?

Flaws or Negative Personality Traits
Are they hypocritical? Do they kick puppies? Are they quick to judge, kind of dumb or have a superiority complex?

Self-Image
Do they see themselves the same way the rest of the world sees them? You've outlined their dominant personality traits, but do they actually believe they possess those traits, or do they see themselves in a different light?

Motivation
What does your character want? What drives them? Do they have short term goals, long term goals, overarching goals? Do they have a purpose they want to achieve?

Beliefs/Values
Are they religious? Are they a pacifist? Do they believe life should be lived their own way? Do they live for someone or something? What is absolutely most important to them?

Opinions/Attitudes
How do they relate to other people? How do they feel about politics, violence, education, ethics –– anything that is relevant to them and their worlds?

Quirks and Mannerisms
What are their idiosyncrasies? Nervous habits? Phobias? Do they have a sense of humor? Do they have a favourite food, or favourite kind of weather? What do they do in their free time, and what does it say about them?
