About ZelosEdit

"Just who the hell do you think I am? I am Zelos, the Chosen of Mana of the noble Mana Lineage!"

It's very easy to make a quick judgement call on Zelos. To most of the people around him, he comes off as loud, cocky, shallow, laid back, snarky and possibly way too cheerful about things. He'll flirt with any girl, pull pranks, tease anyone around him, party hard and almost seems to take life as nothing more than a giant joke either out of apathy or being spoiled or simply because he's too stupid to think otherwise. Even though he has the occasional quick flash of temper, when he's around people he seems to never be down about anything for very long. Unless one is observant, it's very easy to brush off any intelligence or perspective or good advice he gives out as something no more than a complete and utter fluke or stroke of luck.

Fortunately and unfortunately, most of this is an act. An act carefully constructed by an intelligent and perceptive kid who spent his entire life alone and with a grim outlook of that changing any time soon. Realizing from a young age that 99% of the world only cared about him because he could be used for their own means, Zelos built defenses to protect himself - creating a way of life in which he needed no one emotionally and no one would think to need him. Everyone has an agenda, never do anything that can't benefit you, always pick the winning side and trust no one became his mantra. He is incredibly cynical and un-trusting of everyone around him. He knew fully well that no one would ever save him from a life he hated so much, so he takes it upon himself to try to save himself and rely only on himself. While acting like a complete goofball, Zelos in truth is observing everyone around him very carefully and trying to discern what they are after. No one thinks twice about trying to get close to the obnoxious playboy or think that they're smarter than they act, after all. Often he will use this to manipulate people around him to his advantage, as well as backstabbing anyone who he decides isn't going to further his goals.

If you do notice this and call him on it, he'll be the first to call himself incredibly selfish and a jerk. In some ways, this is true. He has very selfish tendencies and he can be rather dismissive of the people around him - especially if they are genuinely concerned for him. Yet at the same time, there's a great deal of selflessness that goes along with his motives and schemes. While he dreams of being free of the Chosen for himself, he's also driven by the idea of freeing his sister from the abbey she's locked up in and giving her the privileged status he thought she always wanted (spoiler: She doesn't and he's an idiot) -- even if it means dying himself in the process. In the Kratos ending in which he dies, he dies with a smile on his face at the thought that Seles will finally be free with him gone- even if he claims that's only a perk. He also seemed to be convinced for a long time that everyone would be so much happier if he wasn't around or was never born, something he would often base his decisions off of when asked to make a choice.

Zelos's self-image of himself is completely and utterly terrible. He's very well aware of what a damaged person he is, that how he behaves is wrong or terrible - Zelos hates himself for it (possibly MORE so than most people hate him) but has been damaged for so long he doesn't know how to stop being the way he is. He thinks that his entire existence does nothing but bring misery to those around him and he's a complete waste of breath. It was a thought instilled in him from his mother at a young age, and the thought has only festered over time. When he's not acting overly arrogant, if you listen to what he says it's extremely self-deprecating. He has no true confidence in himself when it comes to things that matter in his life (love, friendships, saving the world, helping people) - he's very quick to put people like Colette and Lloyd on pedestals for their attitudes and acts all while being convinced that he could never be like that. His lack of confidence manifests in a whole hosts of fears to the point that he could easily be called a coward. He's terrified of failing the world and the people he cares about, so he doesn't try. He's terrified of being like his parents (especially his father) or the rest of his family line, so he does whatever he can to avoid that yet ironically tends to act just like them in this various attempts. He's terrified of actually living so he acts generally suicidal half the time yet his fear of being like his father stops him from simply killing himself. Only after his journey with Lloyd's group has he started facing these fears - but he's a long ways away from overcoming them.

No matter how quickly and how much he would deny it, at his core, Zelos is a good person. In his childhood before the trauma kicked in, Zelos was a kind and earnest kid who only cared about making the people around him happy. It took a hotheaded idiot and his friends to bring that side of Zelos out again, but it's still there none the less and little by little- is what's controlling his actions and choices once again and there's little he can do to go back. Much like his Chosen counterpart, Colette, he does love the world along with everything and everyone in it - even if he finds it to be painful and tries to deny it. He wants to protect people and help make the world a better place for everyone, even if he has severe doubts he'll ever be successful. He protects the innocent, fights to insure everyone has a right to live and does what he can to give advice or aid to people in need. Strangely even though technically his role as a Chosen is over with the world unified once again- he seems to be finally accepting the role he was born into and doing what he can to be the best man and Chosen he can be, albeit while being very, understandably, non-traditional while doing so. At his current canon point, he's still figuring out and stumbling along the way just how to do this- but his future is pretty bright. Later parts of the series show that while he still wears the flighty playboy mask a lot, he's grown into a very mature, wise, loyal and kind man - a Chosen that is well known and beloved by people in Tethe'alla and Sylvarant alike.

While he's opened up much more since his time spent on the Journey, Zelos can be a very hard person to truly befriend. Trust is extremely hard to earn from him and it's something that you cannot force. Even if trust is earned, there is no guarantee that Zelos will open up entirely or be straightforward in his requests for help- he's still learning what it means to be a friend and to trust others. Often he will choose to do things by himself simply because that is what he's used to doing, even if he has friends nearby. Like Colette, he still has a nasty habit of bottling things up and burdening himself instead of others. However truly befriending Zelos has it's rewards: to earn Zelos's trust is to earn a true friend for life that will always watch your back. He'd do anything to help or protect the people he loves (well, loves more than the rest of the world) - whether that means being a doting older brother, backing you up in a fight or always believing in you even if the rest of the world is against you.

TLDR: He's a dick with a loooot of issues - but the endearing sort!

Notes & TriviaEdit

  • He's rather..erm, promiscuous and does not hide this fact. He'll flirt with any girl and sleep around if the opportunity presents itself. During the Journey to help pay for things, he would use his charm on girls to help earn money and items for the group (thus his loss!). He'll definitely talk to girls that he's had relations with, but is very much not interested in any sort of long term relationship.
  • Incredibly smart and well educated. No, really. He graduated top of his class in mathematics in a very advance college equavalent thing. In other subjects he did cheat, but that was more because he didn't see the point in applying himself in topics he found challenging than an actual inability to complete them.
  • On the other hand he's absolutely terrible at proverbs and will almost always muddle them up. But that doesn't stop him from trying to use them frequently.
  • He's from nobility and has a love/hate affair about it. Love because he likes having nice things and being rich (he's spoiled) - hate because he finds most nobles to be downright vile and fake. He'll never hide the fact he's a noble or act ashamed of it, but there's reason why he seems to prefer "commoners" as company.
  • He had to learn how to cook, clean and do laundry during the Journey and turned out to be not the best, but pretty good considering his lack of experience. He enjoys doing those things buuut he's not about to admit it easily because haha, nobles don't do such tasks.
  • Doesn't like snow, snowmen even less. Can act normally around snow but...has seriously traumatic memories surrounding that and would never choose to go near snow unless necessary.
  • Don't bring up his parents. Just...don't.
  • He will come up with nicknames for anyone he plans on talking to more than once unless they outrank him in some way. Deal with it.

HistoryEdit

"I never wanted to be the Chosen. I spent every moment of my life wishing I could just run away."

Full of suckity suck suck.

Zelos was born into the Mana Lineage as part of a 4000 year running eugenics project. His parents hated him, they died, it was traumatizing and it turned out the world around him really really sucked. He slowly descended into crazytown and made bad life choice after bad life choice, until a shonen derp showed up in his life and taught him the meaning of friendship and love! Yay!

AbilitiesEdit

Yes, those were wings. Yes, the VA is bad.
WikiaBotAdded by WikiaBot

It should be noted first that like the rest of the characters, Zelos wears an Exsphere that enhances his normal abilities so he has superhuman strength and agility. In Tales of Symphonia, Zelos is sort of the jack of all trades in terms of abilities. He fights with a short sword (or dagger) and a shield, he can use elemental magic as well as healing magic. However like a true jack of all trades, he is a master of none. His magic is very limited compared to Raine and Genis and Lloyd and Presea seem able to output more force on the pure physical damage front as well. His real specialty is being able to combine his magic and swordsmen skills together, meaning he shoots fireballs at you while slicing you a new one or making his sword electrical.

Not only that, but due to his status as a Chosen he also has a Cruxis Crystal that grants him angelic abilities such as light-based spells and wings (his are gold!). But unlike Colette who relies on her angelic powers in battle and flies around the battlefield with her wings, Zelos is much more discreet about them (either due to his hatred for the position of Chosen or simply not being as powerful as Colette who went under the full angel transformation process) and ties them into his swordplay. The only time you see his wings are brief glimpses during battle and he never draws attention to anything that would make him appear as more than simply a magical swordsman.

Human Related AbilitiesEdit

Weapon Proficiences:

  • Mastered: Short Swords, Daggers
  • Decent: ...Baseball bat.

Extensive Physical Capabilities:

  • He seems acrobatic enough to do flips and all that fun stuff.
  • He's a trained fighter, since I guess they got nothing better to do with their Chosen in Tethe'alla. Anime shows him capable of taking on several guys at once (so long as they're extras).
  • Fast reflexes!

Angel/Exsphere Related AbilitiesEdit

The bright yellow fairy wings of BETRAAAYAL.
YuffAdded by Yuff

These are abilities that require an Exsphere or Cruxis Crystal in order to work. So if you remove the shiny red crystal on his chest all these hax powers go awaaaay.

Superior Strength:

  • People who wear Exspheres have higher strength than the average human. Though he seems to be weaker than Colette who can lift a very large man with no problem. What a sissy.

Superior Reflexes:

  • He's shown to be very fast to react to things, fast enough to surprise even other Exsphere users.

Superior Healing:

  • Wearers of Exspheres have healing magic be more effective on them when it's used. Meaning characters with healing magic get to use less energy to heal him. Sweet deal.

Superior Senses:

  • Cruxis Crystal wearers have super hearing and vision, sadly Zelos being no exception at his canon point. Think how well dogs can hear and hawks can see, that's what I would roughly estimate it being. Though I'm guessing the castle cockblocks this a lot with soundproof walls.

Wings:

  • Cruxis Crystals wearers deviate from Exsphere wearers where they get a pair of magical fairy wings. Zelos's are a bright gold color. Unlike Colette, he uses them very sparingly...to the point where he seems to forget he has them...

Angel Abilities:

  • Cruxis Crystal wearers have powerful light-based attacks that they can use. For an example of what they look like, look at the video earlier in the section. Or this. Once again unlike Colette he uses his Angel abilites sparingly. But when he does, they pack a punch.

Magic AbilitiesEdit

Magic Spells:

  • Zelos has very limited ability to summon and control these following elements in combat: Fire, Wind, Earth, Lightning and Light.

Magic Swordplay:

  • Too many skills to list. But essentially he will frequently tie the different elements he can use into his sword attacks to enhance it's power.

Healing:

  • He's capable of casting spells that will heal wounds. He can't heal illnesses or poisons. Not only this, but it takes concentration for him to do this and people who specialize in healing do better jobs. But hey it's better than nothing.

WeaknessesEdit

Cruxis Crystal:

  • Currently he has a keycrest (...I think), so it's safe. However removing the keycrest or tampering with that or the Cruxis Crystal can cause these possible side effects: loss of appetite, loss of taste-buds, loss of functioning nervous system, loss of voice, freezed aging, suppressed emotions, loss of soul, loss of memories, loss of sentience thought, turning into a monster or death. Don't do it.
  • Removing the Cruxis Crystal without tampering with the keycrest or removing both all together will take away most of his powers- and it'd even make his magic less powerful.

Weak Magic:

  • In his world, humans aren't able to use magic. The reason he's able to is because at a young age, he was forced to ingest some substance called aionis that let humans use magic. Either way, his magic simply isn't as good as someone who can use it naturally.
  • Not only that, but a lot of his magic takes concentration. He can cast mild spells pretty quickly, but the stronger ones take time. So if you see him casting a spell and you don't want him to? Bump into him or throw a rock, because he'll have to start all over again.

Superior Senses:

  • You got a dog whistle? A laser pointer or flashlight? Congratulations. The pain you could inflict on Zelos Wilder or other Cruxis Crystal bearers is tremendous.

ParadisaEdit

"I would always get drunk, have fun with my hunnies, just do whatever the hell I wanted, but... But everything was fake. My life was shit. I hated my destiny as the Chosen and that stupid world that bound me to it with a passion.... But... But, you know, I kind of like it now. The sky, the wind, the passing time, the grass, the bugs, the light, the sounds... All those drunks in the tavern. All the people around me. I love them all."

Recap

Year 0.5 (2011): Zelos arrived in late September, a couple days before they were kicked out of the castle for it to rearrange itself. His stay has been on the quiet side so far, enjoying holidays such as Diwali and Guy Fawke's Night. Hoping to find a way back home with Colette and Lloyd, he went on the expedition to Libet and helped fixed up the train that got them out of there. During December, it snowed and that sucked. But there were magical fairies that made people kiss, which Zelos fully abused. They got sent to Paris, where he was forced to live in a very small studio with a bunch of strange guys. One of which, turned out to be criminal Legato, who Aradia convinced Zelos to keep an eye on during the stay- something that made him pretty uneasy more because it felt like he was falling back on old bad habits than because he was living in a room with a serial killer. But hey it was for the greater good. Meanwhile, after not being informed the dead can come back here, he ran into Martel in Paris - who at the time had no memory of Aselia. It was incredibly awkward and freaky- thanks for the heads up Yuan!

Year 1 (2012): Zelos started off the year in Paris, but other than being INCREDIBLY annoying to his roommates - the whole event was pretty uneventful. When they got back, not too long after the journals got wiped! Not only that, but it turned out the people in Paris came back with them, now with memories of their life in their worlds and memories of Paradisa. More awkward times were to be had with Martel but at least Lloyd was done being a doll so trolling could resume. To be continued....

Tales of SymphoniaEdit

Colette Brunel: Colette is the other Chosen, meaning she's the only other person who really understands the hardships of being the Chosen. Colette and Zelos are night and day to one another in a lot of ways, but the similarities are there if you look close enough. He cares for her a great deal, often citing that Chosens need to look after one another. Because hey, who else would?

Lloyd Irving: BUD ♥ One of the most important people in the world to Zelos. When they first met, Zelos was rather indifferent to him as he was towards most people. He was assigned to accompany Lloyd's group as they traveled through Tethe'alla and keep an eye on them. As their journey continued and became more complex, Zelos got to know Lloyd better and started growing fond of him. His idealistic and optimistic ways even began to rub off on Zelos, making him start to do things selflessly and to no benefit to himself. Lloyd became one of the first people to trust and care about Zelos because he was Zelos and not because he was the Chosen, even after it became clear that Zelos was a traitor. Because of these things, Zelos's trust and faith in Lloyd is absolute- to insult or threaten Lloyd in front of Zelos is a surefire way to make Zelos think very little of you.

Martel Yggdrasil: Complicated with a capital C. In a sense, Martel is literally the reason why Zelos exists - there's no what ifs about it. Which for a guy who spends a not small chunk of his time wishing he had never been born, this is a source of tension for him. Doesn't help that he was raised to believe that Martel was a goddess and the reason why his life sucked so much. These days, he's very well aware that Martel is innocent, not a goddess and couldn't exactly help that her brother went completely nuts after she died. He doesn't want to hate/resent her like he used to but...old habits die hard sometimes.

Raine Sage: Cool beauty Professor! She's another person that he traveled with during that Journey of something something. She spent a good deal of time ignoring his antics and his flirtations, which was really for the best. Once she caught on that he's smarter than he pretends, she assigned him to be the math tutor for the younger people on the journey. While he whines about being hit, he's glad that she's in Paradisa because her logical cynicism is a cool fresh breath of air after six months of being around disney personified.

Yuan: He's the leader of the Renegades. Early in the journey, Zelos would give the Renegades information while he was still deciding on which side to join. Yuan isn't a person that Zelos trusts, even if he's willing to work alongside him. It's not that he holds anything personal against the guy, he just knows he's someone who will do whatever it takes to accomplish his goals- including disposing of Zelos if needed.

ParadisaEdit

Trusted Friends

These are the people who one way or another have earned Zelos's trust. Congratulations, to reach this tier is a bigger feat than beating Superman at armwrestling. Zelos will do anything for someone at this stage, never betray you and even believe in you if you've been framed for murder. In fact he will even look for the evidence to prove your innocence and tell off any whiny kids who argue otherwise. Sure, he'll act cool and tsun about his feelings for you and ten year olds could surpass him with their knowledge of friendship, but he will very much be there for you.

However...If anyone gets on this one before Zelos has been here for at least six months, they are either a goddamn miracle worker or I made a horrible mistake and should be critted immediately. No, really.

FriendsEdit

People that he's fond of and would pick to spend time with on a regular basis. He shows them more kindness than others, but...doesn't have his trust yet. If it came down to it and he had to betray you? He'd feel guilt at least...

Kallen Kouzuki: Ace! ♥ Zelos was initally drawn to her because she reminds him a lot of Sheena and it's really nice to have someone who can troll him equally. Though what started to be just constant annoying and flirtation turned into friendship. She was the first person he told about the whole Chosen gig (because Lloyd guilted him that lying about who he was is WRONG), and her reaction...made a world of difference because she accepted him and didn't get any weird ideas about it. Now their relationship looks...well pretty much like it did before with the trolling and hairpulling, but he sees her as a friend instead of someone that's entertaining. Yay!

Katara: Ice Princess! A waterbender girl who he talks to regularly! Inititally he would flirt with her a lot, as he does all girls, but that kinda died out as they figured out their age difference and she fell more into a sibling sort of category. He finds her fun to be around, especially since she doesn't mind his kinda annoying personality and mannerisms.

Spike: LIL BRO. A cute little baby dragon that while he got off on the wrong foot initially, he found him to actually be a pretty decent kid. Blah blah more later.

HunniesEdit

Ladies he finds attractive and would try to flirt with. They will probably move to other categories as he gets to know them more. Beyond that? They are in the exact same position as the Acquaintances.

Catelyn Stark:

Combat Instructor Alleyne:

Galadriel:

Helen Magnus:

Hermione Granger: One of the ladies who explained the castle to him! She seems very lovely.

Lana Lang: Alluring Lana. He met her on the expedition and she had trouble with another member of the expedition. He hopes that worked out for her. Apparently she's from Earth?

Lucrezia Borgia: Lovely Lucrezia. She is a very nice and friendly girl from Earth. Zelos doesn't mind her, but she did inadvertely kill all fun feelings he had about Paradisa by reminding him how much of a flipping cage it is.

Mistress:

Nora Diniro:

Sakura Haruno:

Yamanaka Ino:

AcquaintancesEdit

He doesn't dislike you, he just doesn't trust you and doesn't have a strong urge to change that anytime soon. He'll chat and be friendly with you, maybe even help you sometimes: but really if it came down to it he'd backstab you with little regret.

Amaterasu:

Aradia Meqido: A young lady who is a member of the Peace Patrol. She requested for him to watch Legato. Fun times.

Cole Turner: Told him about a pagan fest without clothing. On the other hand, demon.

Corporal Maladict: A snarky person who he enjoys chatting with. No idea Mal's a woman.

The Fifth Doctor: Met him on the expedition, knows who Raine Sage is - but doesn't seem to know he's a Chosen! Yay! He's cautious but this guy seems like a good dude.

Fluttershy: Someone he spoke to when the Cruxis Crystal got stolen by Spike. Seemed nice enough.

Jr.: Seemed cool, but kiiinda figuring he doesn't want to talk to Zelos after you know, shooting him in the foot. Whoops.

Mark Hunter (Hard Harry):

Nanako Dojima: Adorable little button! ♥ Give her ten years, and he'd gladly put her on the hunnies list!

Rookie:

Ryotaro Nogami: The I-Act-Violent-And-Want-to-beat-up-everything-but-has-a-heart-of-gold type!

Ted Mosby: The guy does not like dragons. Big or small.

Twilight Sparkle: A talking puple tiny unicorn! He met her when Spike took his Cruxis Crystal and they were getting along okay....until Zelos opened his stupid mouth and mentioned Raine's unicorn horn. Whoops.

DislikeEdit

Dislikes talking to you and certainly would try to avoid you or troll you. But beyond their encounters, he doesn't think about them too much.

Legato Bluesummers: Bro you made such awesome meals, why did you have to turn out to be a psycho killer? Jeez. He was a roommate during Paris.

Tohru Adachi: A friend of Colette's. They got off on a very bad foot, what with blaring music over the journal and refusing to turn it down simply because he had a bad birthday. He thinks the guy is a pretty selfish pansy. He only behaves because he does not want to deal with Colette making sad faces at him. Also watching the guy to make sure he isn't using Colette for his own means :|

Yosuke Hanamura: Some rude spazzy guy. Maybe he's jealous or something.

EnemiesEdit

No one! Yay!

???????Edit

Joshua Christopher: Complicated!
